Abstract

A bag holder comprises an annulus (12) having two similar halves (13) (14) pivotable about an axis between an open position in which the parts extend away from one another and a closed position in which they are adjacent one another. The top of a bag may extend through the annulus over the rim portion (17) and be retained to the body portion (16) by an elastic band or the like. Elastic bands (24) extend between opposed projections (23) on opposite halves and act to retain the holder both in the open and the closed position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Bag Holder This invention relates to a bag holder or sup port device. It is particularly intended for, but not limited to, use with bags for litter. Bag supports for litter bags are known which com prise a solid one piece annulus to which the upper part of the bag is fixed to support the bag in an open position. In order to close the top of the bag a separate lid has to be pro vided.
An object of the present invention is to pro vide a bag holder which will support the bag in an open and a closed position without re quiring a lid.
In one aspect the present invention provides a bag holder to be secured thereto, the annu lus having two parts pivotable relative to one another so that they can be moved between an open position extending away from one another and a closed position lying adjacent one another and resilient retaining means for retaining the holder in the closed position.
Preferably there are also retaining means for holding the bagin the open position and with advantage the same means for holding the bag both in its open and its closed position.
Preferably the holder includes handles for carrying the holder with a bag secured thereto or for supporting the holder and a bag from a hook or other projection.
In the open position the annulus preferably has a body portion which extends substan tially axially and a rim portion which extends substantially radially and preferably the handles extend radially outwardly from the base of the body portion.
Preferably the parts in moving between the closed and the open positions move through a maximum open position in which the two parts are co-planar and extend away from one another.
With advantage the retaining means com prises elastic means extending between the two parts, preferably a pair of elastic bands extending between projections on opposite sides of the pivotal axis.
Preferably the annulus is moulded in a single piece with a line of weakening formed along the pivotal axis.
One embodiment of bag holder, in accor dance with the invention, will now be de scribed, by way of example only, with refer ence to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view from above of a bag holder in its open position, Figure 2 is a side view of the bag holder in the open position, Figure 3 is an underneath view of the holder in its open position, and Figure 4 is a perspective view of the holder in the closed position.
As seen in the drawings, a bag holder comprises an annulus 12 having two similar halves 13, 14 pivotable relative to one another about an axis 15 between an open position in which the parts extend away from one another and a closed position in which they are adjacent one another. As seen in Figs. 1 to 3, in the open position the annulus has a body portion 16 extending substantially radially of the annulus and a pair of handles 18 secured to the base of the body portion to extend radially outwardly thereform. In the closed position the handles are aligned with one another so that the openings 20 therein, which are shaped to accommodate the fingers of a hand, are aligned and the rim portions of the parts abut one another.
The holder is moulded in a single piece from plastics material and a line of weakening 21 is formed in the rim portion to make it sufficiently flexible to allow the relative pivotal movement of the two halves. Alternatively two separate halves could be connected by hinge means. The body portions of the two havles are cut away slightly at the facing edges 22 adjacent the pivotal axis so that in the open position, as best seen in Fig. 2, the parts extend slightly downwardly before the edges 22 abut one another to prevent further downward movement.
Each part is formed with two inwardly extending projections 23 adjacent the pivotal axis and a pair of retaining members 24, in the form of elastic bands, extend between opposed pairs of projections 23. Because in moving from the open to the closed positions the bands pass through the maximum stretch position when the halves are in the maximum, (co-planar) open position, the bands act to retain the holder in both the open and the closed position.
In use a litter bag or the like has its open end extending upwardly through the annulus and its top bent over the rim and retained to the body portion or base of the rim portion by an elastic band or other retaining member.
As the holder is opened and closed the top of the bag is opened and closed. In a closed position the holder can easily be carried or supported from a hook or like projection. The bag can be opened while one handle is supported from such a projection.
1. A bag holder comprising an annulus for receiving the top of a bag to be secured thereto, the annulus having two parts pivotable relative to one another so that they can be moved between an open position extending away from one another and a closed position lying adjacent one another and resilient retaining means for retaining the holder in the closed postion.
2. A bag holder according to Claim 1 including retaining means for retaining the holder in the open position.
