Abstract
The material comprises an abrasion-resistant pervious nonwoven web of bonded filaments, and an absorbent layer of microfibres. The layers are bonded intermittently with the bonds penetrating through the pervious layer and joining the fibres of that layer to those in the absorbent layer. - The absorbent layer pref. incorporates absorbent particles and/or fibres and is pref. od 30% polypropylene fibres and 70% wood pulp with a basis wt. of 190 g/m2. The pervious layer is pref. of spun-bonded polypropylene treated with or containing a surfactant. Bonds are pref. formed by ultrasound or heat and form pockets to provide enhanced roughness, with the bonds in a diamond or square pattern. There may be a waterproof backing layer over the exposed side of the absorbent layer, e.g. of polyethylene.
Description
GB2196296A 1 SPECIFICATION pulp fibres giving good absorbency together
with a relatively coherent structure due to the Web material entanglement of the fibres and pulp. Other ab sorbent particles or fibres may be- used.
This invention relates to material for use as a 70 Preferably, the central "layer" has 30% mat or the like intended to be positioned, for polypropylene and 70% wood pulp with the example, at the entrance from a dirty area to basis weight being 190 grammes per square a clean area e.g. at the door of a house or at metre. Claims (11)
1. Disposable mat material comprising an abrasion resistant pervious layer of a non woven web of bonded filaments and an ab sorbent layer of microfibres, the pervious and absorbent layers being bonded intermittently, characterised in that the bonds penetrate through the pervious layer and join the fibres in that layer with those in the absorbent layer.
2. Material as claimed in Claim 1 in which absorbent particles and/or fibres are incorpor ated into the absorbent layer of microfibres.
3. Material as claimed in either Claims 1 or 2 in which the bonded areas are in the form of 'pockets' giving an enhanced roughness to the pervious layer.
4. Material as claimed in any of the preced ing claims wherein the bonds are arranged in a diamond or square pattern.
5. Material as claimed in Claim 4 wherein the distance between bond areas is about 3.5 mm and the distance between the parallel lines of the bond pattern is about 38 mm.
6. Material as claimed in any of the preced ing claims in which the pervious layer is of non-woven spun bonded polypropylene treated with, or containing, a surfactant.
7. Material as claimed in any of the preced ing claims in which the absorbent layer is of meltblown polymeric fibres and wood pulp fibres.
8. Material as claimed in Claim 7 wherein the absorbent layer comprises about 30 per cent polypropylene fibres and 70 percent wood pulp, the basis weight being about 190 grammes per square metre.
9. Material as claimed in any of the preced ing claims including a waterproof backing layer positioned on the other side of the absorbent layer from the outer abrasion resistant layer.
10. Material as claimed in Claim 9 wherein the backing sheet is joined to the absorbent inner layer either by the same bonds which act to bond the abrasion resistant and the absorbent layers, or with an adhesive or the like.
11. Material as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the bond areas are formed by ultrasonic rays or by thermal bond ing which acts to burn through the pervious layer and creates molten bonds at least be tween the fibres in the pervious and absor bent layers.
