Abstract

A booklet (12) comprises a stack of pages (14) with cover (16, 18) loosely bound together along their top edges (22) by a helicule wire binding (24). Bottom edges (26) of the covers (16, 18) are joined together by a folding panel (28) to form a stand (36) so that the booklet can be stood up for reading any selected page. A pocket (38) is provided on a third cover (20) of the booklet for a tape recording (40) to accompany the booklet. The pages need not be bound together, but may be stored as separate cards in a second pocket. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to a booklet or stack of pages and an audio-visual device This invention relates generally to a booklet or stack of pages to be stood up for reading and to the provision, or use, therewith of a recording.
A particular application of the invention is to the combination of a booklet or stack of pages with a recording for playing while reading a page of the booklet or stack of pages. If for example it is desired to have one's hands free for performing a task while reading the page and listening to the recording, it would be desirable in many instances to be able to stand the page up while reading it. When finished with, it would also be desirable to be able to store the booklet or stack of pages away with the recording, so that they are all together when next wanted.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a device comprising a booklet with pages loosely bound with each other and with at least one cover, more rigid than the pages, along top edges of the pages and of the at least one cover, the at least one cover being adapted to open into a self-supporting stand for the booklet so that the booklet can stand up by itself for the pages to be read.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided an audiovisual device comprising a booklet adapted to stand up in a self-supporting manner with any selected page open for reading and to keep itself open at the selected page and the booklet comprising a pocket containing a recording to accompany the booklet.
According to a third aspect of the present there is provided an audio-visual device comprising, in combination, a stack of pages, a collapsible stand for supporting the stack standing up with any selected page thereof on top for reading, and a recording for playing while reading the selected page, the stand having a pocket to store the recording away when not in use.
The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein like references refer to like parts unless the context requires otherwise and wherein: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention, showing the booklet opened and stood up: Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 shows the booklet folded up.
Referring to the drawings, the illustrated audio-visual device 10 comprises a booklet 12 which is formed by a stack of pages 14 loosely bound together with three covers 16, 18, 20 along top edges 22 thereof by a helical wire binding 24. The three covers 16, 18, 20 are more rigid than each of the pages 14.
This kind of binding is well-known.
Two of the covers 16 and 18 are mutually adjacent and are joined together along bottom edges 26 thereof by a foldable panel 28 having a centre-fold 30 and side-folds 32, 34 where it adjoins covers 16 and 18 respectively. The panel 28 can open out as shown in Figs 1 and 2 so as to open apart, partly, the two covers 16, 18, for standing the booklet 12 up. The panel 28 can be folded up, as shown in Fig 3, for closing the two covers 16, 18 together.
When the panel 28 is opened up as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the covers 16, 18 form a stand 36 for the pages 14, so that any selected page can be stood up for reading.
The third cover 20 is formed with a pocket 38 to accommodate a tape recorder cassette 40.
The booklet 12 and a recording of the cassette 40 may for example relate to cooking. A person following a recipe from the recording and the booklet simultaneously may stand the booklet 12 up by the used of the stand 36, with the panel 28 opened up, and play the recording while reading the page having the selected recipe.
The recording might be just an audio recording or might alternatively be a combined audio-visual recording to be played through a video tape recorder through a television set. If the recording is simply an audio one, it may be played through a tape deck and audio system. Given the ready availability of personal tape-playing systems using miniature tape cassettes, a smaller pocket than that shown may be provided for such a miniature recordered tape if desired.
The way in which the covers 16, 18 of the booklet 12 form a stand for the booklet may be of use independently of any tape recording, in which case the tape recording itself and the pocket for it may be omitted.
In another modification, not shown, instead of binding the pages together in a booklet, they may be stored as separate cards in a second pocket (not shown) carried by one of the covers 16, 18 forming the stand 36.

A device comprising a booklet with pages loosely bound with each other and with at least one cover, more rigid than the pages, along top edges of the pages and of the at least one cover, the at least one cover being adapted to open into a self-supporting stand for the booklet so that the booklet can stand up by itself for the pages to be read.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the at least one cover comprises two mutually adjacent covers joined together along bottom edges thereof by a foldable panel which can open out to open apart partly the two covers for standing the booklet up and which can
