Description

SPECIFICATION Broadcast retransmission system Field of Invention This invention relates to the interconnection of radio communications systems for rebroadcasting transmissions from one radio communication system to another. More particularly, this invention relates to the interconnection between single side band (SSB) radio communication systems and eitherfrequency modulated (FM) radio communication systems orwire line telephone communication systems.

Background of Invention Various types of communication systems have developed to service the peculiar needs of various types of users. The type of system selected to service any particular group of users is dependent upon a variety of factors including the frequency of anticipated communications, the geographic separation between users, the coverage area and terrain as well as many other factors. Thus, single side band (SSB) radio communication systems have been developed for long range radio communications while frequency modulated (FM) radio communication systems have been developed for shorter range radio communications. Wireline telephone systems have been developed where it is feasibleto install wireline infrastructure.

A problem arises when a user from one given system desires to communicate with a user in a different system. For example, someone on a single side band system may have need to communicate with a user having an FM system. Accordingly, the single side band user would need his communication rebroadcast onto the FM system.

For him to receive a reply to his communication, the FM user would need his communication rebroadcast onto the single side band system.

Clearly, what is required then, is a broadcast retransmission system that provides a retransmission link between the various incompatible radio communication systems.

However, since most radio communication systems are simplex or half duplex in operation, that is, each transceiver can either be receiving ortransmitting, but not both, some control mechanism must be employed to control the direction of the communication. The simples transceivers, aside from its received audio output and transmitted audio input have a simple push-to-talk (PTT) control.

It is an object therefore of one aspect of the present invention to provide a broadcast retransmission system having a retransmission link for providing such rudimentary control.

Summary of the Invention According to the present invention, in a broadcast retransmission system, including a receiver, having a received audio output, and a transmitter, having a transmitted audio input and transmit control ; a retransmission link is provided for coupling the received audio to the transmitted audio and a detector, responsive to audio activity, coupled from the received audio to the transmit control.

An exemplary broadcast retransmission in accordance with the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is a block diagram of a retransmission link between a conventional single side band transceiver and an FM transceiver according to the present invention.

Figure 2 is a block diagram of a retransmission link between a conventional single side band transceiver and an FM transceiver having intermittent interrupt control according to another aspect of the present invention.

Figure 3 is a block diagram of the retransmission link having multichannel control according to yet another aspect of the present invention.

Figure 4 is a block diagram of the retransmission link having an end-of-transmission tone generator according to another aspect of the present invention.

Detailed Description ofthe Invention Figure 1 is a block diagram of a broadcast retransmission system 10. The system 10 includes a single side band transceiver 12 having a received audio output 14, a transmitted audio input 16, and push-to-talk transmit control 18. The system 10 also includes a frequency modulated (FM) transceiver 20 having a received audio output 22, a transmitted audio input 24 and push-to-talk (PTT) transmit control 26.

According to the present invention, the retransmission link 30 extends the high quality communications of the FM radio communication system 20 to the long distance SSB radio communication system 12 by coupling the FM received audio 22 to the SSB transmitted audio input 16. PTT transmit control 18 is provided by a conventional voice-operated-switch (VO) 32 that is responsive to the received audio 22 activity.

A complementary arrangement is provided for communications in the opposite direction by coupling the SSB received audio output 14to the FM transmitted audio input 24. Similarly, PTT transmit control 26 is provided by a conventional VO 34that detects audio activity on the SSB received audio output 14.

What has been illustrated is a conventional voice operated switch (VO) which may be advantageously replaced by other conventional FM detectors such as carrier squelch detector or, as illustrated in Figure 3, coded decoders such as the DTMF decoder 36 utilised in conjunction with a multi channel controller 38. For wireline telephone systems, the decoder or detector may take the form of a conventional level detector.

Peculiar problems have arisen from the broadcast retransmission of single side band systems. Single side band systems, due to their long distance characteristics and corresponding large user community, are particularlysusceptibleto continuous noise and frequent transmissions. Thus, it is necessary to provide a priority mechanism for transmit control. Otherwise, the nearly continuous broadcast of the single side band system would rarely permit the FM receiver from ceasing the broadcast retransmission system. Two embodiments of the present invention directed to this aspect are illustrated in Figures 2 and 4.

Figure 2 schematically illustrates a single side band 12 to FM 20 retransmission linkthat is intermittently interrupted by removing PTT transmission control 26. The PTT transmission control is interrupted by any conventional timing circuitry 40 and switching circuitry 42. The exact nature of this circuitry is, of course, dictated by the PTTtransmit control specifications of each particulartransceiver. This intermittent or periodic interruption of the PTT transmit control permits the other FM to SSB retransmission link to cease the broadcast retransmission system during an interval controlled by the timing circuitry 40. In the preferred embodiment, the FM system would be given a five second period to cease the retransmission link every one half minute.

Figure 4 illustrates a further aid to the FM system user in assisting him to cease the retransmission link by providing an end-of-transmission tone upon the cessation of audio activity from the SSB receiver. Thus, the FM system user would receive an audible indication that the retransmission link was free for use.

Also, this tone generator 44 could be advantageously employed through the introduction of controller output 46 (illustrated in Figure 3) as an acknowledgement signal for the FM system user that his DTMF coded signal was received and that the controller 38 had executed his request.

It will be appreciated that although the present invention is particularly useful for single side band systems, the broadcast retransmission system may be employed to retransmit messages from a variety of communication systems to either similar or dissimilar communication systems.

Claims (12)

1. A broadcast retransmission system including a receiver, having a received audio output, and a transmitter, having a transmitted audio input and transmit control, characterized by a retransmission link coupling the received audio to the transmitted audio and a detector, responsive to audio activity, coupled from the received audio output to the transmit control.
2. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 1 wherein a plurality of retransmission links interconnect a plurality of transceivers in a complementary fashion.
3. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 2 wherein one retransmission link is intermittently interrupted to permit the other retransmission link to cease the broadcast retransmission system.
4. The broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 2 wherein transceivers employ different modulation schemes.
5. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 4 wherein one transceiver is single sideband modulated.
6. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 4 wherein one transceiver is frequency modulated.
7. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 4 wherein one transceiver is part of a wireline system.
8. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the audio activity detector is a voice operated switch.
9. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the audio activity detector is a coded controller.
10. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 9 wherein the coded controller is a DTMF controller.
11. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 1 wherein a signal generator is coupled between the audio activity detector and the transmitted audio.
12. A broadcast retransmission system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the signal generator generates an end-of-transmission signal upon cessation of audio activity.
