Abstract
An insulated bag comprises an outer layer (1) e.g. of cotton and polyester mix, a first inner layer (2) of a heat deflectant material such as aluminium backed cotton fabric, a second insulating inner layer (3) comprising for example, a series of thin strips (4) of metallized polymer quilted between two sheets (5) of non-woven polyester scrim, a third inner layer (7) e.g. of a medium-weight, non-woven polyester and a final inner layer (8) e.g. of a hard wearing and tear resistant nylon. The bag is primarily designed to keep cool articles placed therein. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Insulated Bag
This invention relates to bags and is particulariy concerned with insulated bags.
A problem with conventional bags intended for carrying cosmetics and the like is that they fail to keep the contents of the bag cool. Accordingly, under hot ambient conditions, which may occur both in and out of doors, cosmetics such as lipsticks carried in a conventional bag can melt and be ruined.
The present invention aims to solve this problem by providing a bag which can keep cosmetics and other articles cool even under hot ambient conditions.
It has previously been proposed to provide insulated containers made of plastics material having foam insulation. The disadvantage with such containers is that they tend to be heavy and bulky and are not suitable for carrying small items such as cosmetics. Afurther aim of the present invention is to provide an insulated bag which is light and convenient to carry.
According to the invention, there is provided an insulated bag which comprises an outer layer, a first inner layer consisting of a heat deflectant material, a second inner layer consisting of insulation material, a third inner layer and a final inner layer, said layers being secured together along the seams of the bag to form said bag.
The outer layer may consist of any suitable material but it is preferred to use a material comprising a mixture of cotton and polyester. A suitable pattern andlor decoration may be provided for or on the outer layer or, alternatively, the outer layer may be plain.
Preferably, the first inner layer consists of a fabric having aluminium flakes applied to one surface to form said deflectant layer. The surface having the aluminium flakes will normally be located on the outer side of the layer, that is the surface facing the outer layer of the bag. A suitable material for this layer is an aluminium backed cotton fabric sold underthe Trade Mark"MILlUM".
The second inner layer preferably consists of a series of thin strips of metallized polymer material quilted between two layers of non-woven polyester scrim. A suitable material is that sold under the
Registered Trade Mark "FLECTALON", a preferred weight of this material being 200 g.s.m.
The third inner layer desirably consists of a medium-weight, non-woven polyester a suitable material being that sold under the Trade Mark "VILENE".
Finaily, the fourth inner layer should preferably be made of a fairly strong, tear and wear resistant material. A suitable material is nylon although other materials may be used if desired.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawing which shows one embodiment of an insulated bag according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the bag consists of an outer layer 1 consisting of cotton and polyester mix which is followed by a first inner layer 2 of aluminium backed cotton fabric which serves as a heat deflectant material. The next layer 3 comprises a series of thin strips 4 of metallized polymer which are quilted between two sheets 5 of non-woven polyester scrim, which layers are sewn together at predetermined intervals by parallely extending stitch lines 6. The next inner layer 7 consists of a medium-weight, non-woven polyester and the final inner layer 8 may be any suitable hard wearing and tear resistant material.
The bag may be provided with any suitable fastening means, the loop 11 and thong 12 being shown in the drawing merely as an example.
Beading 13 may be provided around the seams of the bag as an embellishment if desired but this is not essential. A further beading 14 may also be provided, if desired, to give the bag an attractive appearance but, again, this is not essential. The outer layer 1 may have a pattern or may be plain and may be made in a wide choice of colours.
In addition to the front closure flap 15, the bag may also be provided with a sliding clasp fastening (not shown) or other suitable fastening means to retain the contents therein. Further, the bag may also be provided with a shoulder strap or carrying strap (not shown) if desired.
The bag according to the invention has been primarily designed to keep cool articles placed therein. However, it could also be used to keep articles hot. In this case, the aluminium surface of the first inner layer will desirably be located on the inner side, that is the side facing the second inner layer. This arrangement of the layers also provides an article which is suitable, for example, for use as a tea cosy.
The bag according to the invention is light, washable, easy to pack and does not crease easily. It should, however, be noted that the invention is not restricted to the embodiment shown in the drawing but modifications and variations are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.
