Description
SPECIFICATION
Lamp assembly
This invention relates to a lamp assembly.
According to the present invention there is provided a lamp assembly comprising a light bulb socket, a socket mounting, and a lamp shade, the socket mounting being provided with first resilientengage- ment means for retaining the light bulb socket on the socket mounting and second resilient engagement means for retaining the lamp shade on the socket mounting.
Preferably also, the first engagement means comprises resilient arms each having at one end a pawl for engaging a corresponding abutment on the light bulb socket.
Preferably also, the second engagement means comprises resilient arms each having at one end a pawl for engaging a corresponding abutment on the lamp shade.
Preferably also, the socket mounting is provided with meansfor locating the lamp shadecomprising arms having forked ends for receiving an edge portion ofthe lamp shade.
Preferably also, there is provided a casing for receiving the light bulb socket and the socket mounting.
Preferably also, the socket mounting is provided with means for connection to a mounting arm. The connection means may allow the socket mounting to rotate relative to the mounting arm.
The mounting arm may be rotatably mounted on a bracket. The axis of rotation of the mounting arm on the bracket may be perpendicular to the axis of rotation ofthe socket mounting on the mounting arm.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an exploded plan view of a lamp assembly in accordance with the present invention showing part ofthe lamp shade ofthe assembly; and
Figure2 is a plan viewofthree lamp shades suit ablefor use with the lamp assembly of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a lampassemblycom- prises a light bulb socket 1, a socket mounting 2, and a lamp shade 3.
The socket mounting 2 is formed of a resilientplas- tics material and comprises a base 4from which extends two inner arms 5 and 6 and four outer arms 7,8 and 9 (fourth arm hidden from view).
The free end portion of each inner arm 5 and 6 is provided with a pawl 11. The lower end portion of the light bulb socket 1 has two outwardly extending abutments 13 located on opposite sides of the socket 1 for engaging the pawls 11. The abutments 13are located at the end of slots 14 each formed by two fins 15 on the side of the socket 1.
To fitthe light bulb socket 1 into the socket mounting 2 the socket 1 is located such that the end portions of the inner arms 5 and 6 are positioned in the lower end of the slots 14. The socket 1 is then pushed downwards in the direction of arrows A, such that the arms 5 and 6 are forced outwards by the abutments 13 bearing against the pawls 11, until the pawls 11 pass over and engage with the abutments 13.
Two ofthe outer arms 7 and 8 serve to retain the lamp shade3 on the socket mounting 2. The arms7 and 8 extend upwardly on opposite sides ofthe base 4 and the free end portion of each arm 7 and 8 is provided with a pawl 12. One ofthe arms 8 has atapering stiffening web 16 which extends from the base 4to the free end of the arm 8. The other arm 7 has two parallel webs 17 and 18, which extend from the base 4to the free end ofthe arm 7 and define a slot 19 in the outerface of the arm 7.
The outer arms 9 serve to locate the lamp shade 3 on the socket mounting 2. The arms 9 extend upwardly on opposite sides of the base 4 and the end portion of each arm member 9 is forked at 20.
To fit the lamp shade 3 into the socket mounting 2 a base portion 21 ofthe lamp shade 3, which is provided with two opposing rectangular openings 22 and 23, is positioned at the ends of the outer arms 7,8 and 9. The lamp shade 3 is positioned such that the openings 22 and 23 are directlyabovethe arms7 and 8 and the edge ofthe base portion 21 is directly abovetheforked ends 20 ofthearms9. The lamp shade 3 is then pushed downwards in the direction of arrows B, displacing the ends ofthe arms 7 and 8 outwards, until the pawls 12 pass into the openings 22 and 23.
The light bulb socket 1 and the socket mounting 2 are located within a box section casing 24. The casing 24 is formed of folded sheet metal, the edges 25 ofthe metal being folded to extend into the casing 24. When the casing 24 is to be placed around the socket mounting 2, before the lamp shade 3 is fitted, each outer arm 7,8 and 9 is positioned in a corner of the casing 24, the edges 25 being located in and held together bythe slot 19 inthe arm 7.
A cut out 26 is provided in the casing 24 to receive a mounting connection 27 which extends from the base 4.
Wires 28 from the light bulb socket 1 pass through an opening in the base4 into a chamberformed by the base 4 and an end cover 29. The end cover 29 is retained on the base 4 by spring clips 30 which cooperate with corresponding slots in the base 4.
The mounting connection 27 has a part conical lip 31 which cooperates with spring clips 32 provided in an end portion 33 of a mounting arm 34, allowing the base 4to rotate relative to the mounting arm 34. The mounting arm 34 is formed of a plastics materiai and comprises a U-shaped section having a cover plate 35. From the end portion 33 the arm 34 extends, at an angle of forty five degrees to the base 4, to an end portion 36 which is provided with spring clips 37 to engage with a connection 38 on a bracket 39.
Theconnection 38 isformed of a part conical lip40 on the end of a hollow cylindrical bushing 41 which extends from the bracket 39, a spacing washer 42 being provided between the end portion 36 and the bracket 39.
The mounting arm 34 may rotate relative to the bracket 39 on an axis perpendiculartothe axis of rotation between the base 4 and the arm 34.
A cover plate 43 is fitted over the rearface of the end portion 36 of the arm 34to conceal the wires 28 which pass through the connection 38 from the bracket29 intothearm 34.Thewires 28 passthrough the arm 34, concealed by the plate 35, into the chamberformed between the base 4 and the cover 29 through the mounting connection 27.
The absence of screws or spring washers from the assembly allows an operator to assemble the component parts quickly and easily without tools, leading to a considerable saving in time and expense.
Modifications and improvements may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
