Abstract

In order to utilise both wind and solar energy the rotor of a wind turbine is provided with photovoltaic cells 19. The turbine may be of an axial flow type (Fig. 1) or vertical axis type (Fig. 2). Pitch varying means and tracking means for turning the turbine to face the sun or into wind may be provided. The turbine can be used on the roof of light cars or on the roofs of buildings for such purposes as airconditioning or refrigeration and it can also be used for irrigation, water pumping etc. In the case of the vertical axis device (Fig. 2) the rotor may be driven by an electric motor (18) powered by the cells (19) instead of the wind acting on vanes (16). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Conbined solar-power and wind-power generator This invention relates to the harnessing of two sources of energy, namely, wind and sun. It is arranged that when there is no wind blowing, electrical energy is generated by photovoltaic cells on the sails. When there is no sun shining but a wind is blowing, mechanical energy is converted into electrical power.
In one form of the invention Fig. 1, as with conventional windmills, the sails 11 rotate around spindle 12, which is mounted on a turret 13, which itself rotates in azimuth around post 21 to face the sun or the wind, whichever is the more providential at a particular time.
The photovoltaic cells 19 are mounted on the faces of the sails 11.
Control systems also allow a combination of wind and sun to be used simultaneously, if a greater total amount of power could be so generated.
The mounting of the sails 11 in the hub 14 is arranged so that the helical pitch of the sails 11 may be varied from zero; for gathering maximum solar power; to a considerably larger pitch angle for gathering maximum wind power; or any amount of pitch angle in between these two limits to achieve a maximum simultaneous combination of wind and solar power.
By any means the turret is rotated to follow the sun in azimuth; and tilt in elevation, if so required, as the sun rises and sets.
In another form of the invention Fig. 2, the impellor 15 is mounted on a building wall or roof, and the vanes 16 are set square to the plane of the impellor 15. The impellor 15 may be driven by an electric motor 18 powered with current produced by the photovoltaic cells 19; or driven by the action of the wind on the vanes 16; or; in the event of neither wind or sun; any other convenient supply of current.
COMBINED SOLAR POWER AND WINDPOWER GENERATOR 1)The Generator will operate without sun but with wind 2)The Generator will operate without wind but with sun 3)The Generator can produce direct current electricity 4)The Generator operates efficiently either vertical or horizontal
