Abstract

A filtering screen comprises a mesh having cores 17 coated with a plastics material 19. Preferably the cores 17 are stainless steel or Kevlar. Preferably the plastics material 19 is abrasion resistant, eg. polyurethane, and may also be non-stick, eg. polytetrafluoroethylene, polyetheretherketone or polyethersulphone. The plastics material 19 may be applied to the mesh cores 17 either before, Fig. 4a, or after, Fig. 3a the cores 17 are woven into the mesh 11. The plastics coating 19 provides the mesh with abrasion resistance. The invention may be applied, for example, to filtering screens for use in vibratory screening apparatus, e.g. for screening drilling mud. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to filtering screens DESCRIPTION Field of invention This invention relates to filtering screens and has particular, but not exclusive, application to filtering screens for use in vibratory screening apparatus in which a productto be filtered is vibrated on a mesh screen, such as is used for screening of drilling mud.
Summary of the invention In one aspect the present invention provides a filtering screen comprising a mesh coated with plastics material.
The material of the mesh may be a monofilament or a multifilamentthread. The material is preferably relatively inextensible and of a high tensile strength.
It maybe metal wire, or a suitable non-metallicsub- stance such as Kevlar.
The material may first be formed into the mesh and then coated with plastics material. Alternatively, the mesh-forming material may be coated with plastics material before being formed into the mesh.
These two alternatives may be combined, to result in a double coating, one applied before the mesh is formed and one after.
By coating the mesh of a screen with suitable plastics material the properties of the screen, particularly abrasion-resistance and adhesion-resistance, can be improved compared with those of a conventional wire mesh screen.
Suitable plastics include those with high resist anceto abrasion, eg. polyurethane. Advantageously, the plastics material has good non-stick properties as well as good abrasion resistance. Suitable nonstick materials are polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyethersulphone (PES). PTFE is particularly preferred.
The invention is applicable to a wide range offiltering screens e.g. screens for vibratory screening apparatus. Such screens have in the past generally been of wire, typically stainless steel, although as mentioned above, other materials such as Kevlar may be used in screens according to the present invention. Such screens are generally available in a range of sizes, a typical screen size being, say, 4ft (approx. 1 .2m) by 6ft (approx. 1 .8m). A similar screen area could alternatively be provided by eg. four screens each 2ft by 3ft (approx. 0.6m by 0.9m).
Screens embodying the present invention for use in vibratory screening apparatus will normally have a range of mesh sizes of 5to 325 mesh, i.e. 5 to 325 wires per inch (0.2 to 12.8wires per mm).
The thickness of the coating is not critical, and may typically be in the range of 2 micrometres to 1 millimetre. The coating thickness will depend partially on the mesh size, with thinner coatings forfiners meshes.
The coating may be applied by a variety of dif ferenttechniques including:- 1. dip coating, by dipping the mesh into a bath of molten plastics; 2. solvent coating, in which the plastics is dissolved in a suitable solvent and applied to the mesh, e.g. by painting, with the solvent subsequently evaporating off; and 3. spray coating.
If the mesh-forming material is coated before being formed into the mesh, this is most conveniently done by dip coating.
The coating process is carried out under suitable conditions, e.g. time and temperature, to produce a uniform coating of plastics of desired thickness.
A coated mesh in accordance with the invention may be used in filtering apparatus, e.g. vibratory screening apparatus, in the same way as a conventional wire mesh screen, being held in the apparatus in conventional manner.
In a further aspect, the present invention provides filtering apparatus comprising a mesh coated with plastics material.
In a preferred aspect, the invention provides vibratory screening apparatus comprising a screen with a mesh coated with plastics material.
Filtering apparatus, particularly vibratory screening apparatus, with a screen in accordancewiththe invention has improved performance compared with conventional apparatus using wire screens. In particularsuch apparatus is more resistant to abrasion in use and is more resistant to sticking, i.e. there is less tendency of solids to adhere to the screen, leading to improved durability and screen life and material throughput.
Embodiments of the present invention, given by way of non-limitative example, will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic side view of vibratory screening apparatus incorporating a screen embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a partial sectional view of the screen and the screen box of the apparatus of Figure 1; Figure 3a is a partial sectional view of a first screen embodying the present invention; Figure 3b is partial plan view of the screen of Figure 3a; Figure4a isa partial sectional view of a second screen embodying the present invention; Figure 4b is a partial plan view of the screen of Figure 4a.
Detailed description of the drawings Figure 1 shows schematically a vibratory screening apparatus from the side. A screening box 1 has closed sides, and slopes from an upper end to a lower end, both of which have openings for the ingress and egress respectively of material. An input chute 3 delivers material to the upper end ofthe box 1, and material leaving the box through its lower end passes into a first output chute 5. The box has an open bottom, into which a filtering screen is fitted, so that material passing from the upper end to the lower end passes overthefiltering screen. Liquids and fine material passing through the screen are collected into a second output chute 7.
One or more vibrators 9 are mounted on the box 1, to cause the box and the screen to vibrate in use. Various forms of vibrating means are known. Typically, the vibrating means consists ofa motor driving a heavy off-centre load in rotation.
Figure 2 shows part of one side of the screen box 1 in section, together with a filtering screen mounted in it. The filtering screen comprises a mesh 11 attached to a screen frame 13. The screen frame is supported on a horizontal flange ofthe side ofthe box 1, and is attached to the vertical side of the box by a tensioning bolt 15. When the screen is fitted to the box 1 the bolt 15 is tightened to apply a desired tensioning force to the screen.
Figures 3 and 4 showtwo embodimentsforthe structure ofthe mesh 11. Figures 3a and 4a are sections along the length of one of the lines of the mesh and Figures 3b and 4b are plan views of the mesh.
In Figure 3a, a core material 17, typically stainless steel wire or Kevlar cord, has been woven into a mesh and then coated with a plastics material 19.
Since the mesh 11 has been formed from the cores 17 before the plastics material 19 is applied,thevarious cores contact each other at mesh junctions and the plastics material forms a common coating over all the cores.
In Figure 4, the mesh 11 was manufactured from cores 17 which had already been pre-coated with a plastics material 19. Consequently, the cores 17 do not contact each other atthejunctions of the mesh and each core 17 has a separate plastics coating 19.
The cores 17 provide the principal tensile strength ofthe mesh 11, and carrythetensioning force app- lied bythetensioning bolts 15. The plastic coating 19 protects the cores 17 from abrasion by the material passing over the screen, which has in the past been a significant cause of failure of filtering screens in vibratoryscreening apparatus.
In addition to abrasion resistance, the plastics material 19 may be selected to have good non-stick properties in orderto minimisetendency of solids passing through the screen box 1 to adhere to the mesh 11. Suitable materials are listed above.

Claims (15)

1. Afiltering screen comprising a mesh coated with plastics material.
2. Afiltering screen according to claim 1 in which the mesh comprises cores having separate respective coatings of platics material.
3. Afiltering screen according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the mesh comprises cores having a common coating of plastics material.
4. Afiltering screen according to any one ofthe preceding claims in which the mesh comprises cores of stainless steel.
5. Afiltering screen according to any one of claims 1 to 3 in which the mesh comprises cores of Kevlar.
6. Afiltering screen according to any one of the preceding claims in which the plastics material comprises polyurethane.
7. Afiltering screen according to any one of claims 1 to Sin which the plastics material comprises polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
8. Afiltering screen according to any one of claims 1 to Sin which the plastics material comprises polyetheretherketone (PEEK).
9. Afiltering screen according to any one of claims 1 to Sin which the plastics material comprises polyethersulphone (PES).
10. Afiltering screen according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the coating of plastics material is in the range of micrometres 1 millimetre thick.
11. Afiltering screen according to any one of the preceding claims in which the coating of plastics material was applied by dip coating.
12. Afiltering screen according to any one of claims 1 to 10 in which the plastics coating was applied by solvent coating.
13. Afiltering screen according to any one of claims 1 to 10 in which the coating of plastics material was applied by spray coating.
14. Afiltering screen substantially as described herein with a reference to Figu re 3 or Figure 4.
15. Vibratory screening apparatus comprising a filtering screen according to any one of the preceding claims.
