Abstract

The invention relates to pads for cricket, hockey or the like which comprise a shell (12) of rigid polymeric material which is nevertheless resilient to forces opening the shell and which is non-deformable in normal use, the shell being shaped to conform with a portion of the body to be protected such as the shins, thighs and the like, and having a laminate of cushioning material (14) inside the shell. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Padding for sporting purposes Field of the invention This invention relates to padding for sporting purposes and has particular application to the sport of cricket.
Background of the invention The cricket pad has not changed shape or method of construction for many decades. It is generally constructed from a plurality of bamboo lengths or stainless steel struts with supporting cushioning material stitched to form a compartmentalised structure well known to players and spectators alike.
Pads have been an important part of the game of cricket and many of the laws of the game are centred around the pads.
Of course, the main purpose of the pads is to protech the legs of the batsman (orwicketkeeper) but it has been the experience of many players that the conventional pads do not prevent hurt sufficiently in the case of a ball which is travelling fast.
It is an object of the present invention to provide pads for cricket or other sports which tend to spread the shock so asto avoid localised hurtoreven injury.
Afurtherobjectofthe invention isto provide afar less expensive pad which is, atthe sametime, more efficient in preventing hurt. This pad is also more durable and longer lasting which in turn makes it more cost effective.
Ayet further object of the invention is to provide padding which is more comfortable, lighter and which allows greater freedom of movement.
A still further object of the invention is to provide padding for cricket which incorporates thigh padding which hitherto has been a separate pad loca table underthe trousers ofthe player.
The invention According to the invention paddingforsportinclu- des a shell of rigid yet flexible polymeric material shaped to conform with the part of the body to be protected and having a laminate of a cushioning material such as a foamed polymeric material.
For cricket (or hockey) pads the invention provides a first portion which covers the shin and knee of a player and a second portion which covers the thigh or portion thereof. However, it will be appreciated thatforjuniors and lower league players the first portion may be sufficient.
For more senior players the lower portions for each leg may be identical butforthe left high a more substantial padding may be provided as compared to the right thigh (and vice versa for a left-handed player) since it is the formerthatfaces the fast bowler and is more likely to receive the impact of a dangerous delivery.
Several polymeric materials are useful for the shell of the padding but thermoplastic polymeric material such as polypropylene and polyethlene have been found to be particularly usefu 1. The material is preferably moulded to conform to the shape of a human shin orthigh but with emphasis in respect of a very thin shin orthigh. However, the monolithic structure is sufficiently resilient to accommodate most shapes of shins orthighs and affords great comfort.
The polymeric material may be reinforced with glassfibreorthe like.
The cushioning material is preferably a foamed polymeric material such as foamed polyurethane, the thickness of which is determined by simple trial and error depending on the resistance to shock of the shell ofthe padding.
Suitablefastening means are provided and these may be welded into or glued onto the thermoplastic shell material or attached by rivets or other like fastening means. Thefastening means may take the form of VELCRO arrangements but itwill be app reciated that many forms of attachment are included within the scope of the invention.
Where it is feared that the padding of the invention may induce heat upon the player, a furtherfeature of the invention includes the provisions of perforations which may be formed in the shell or on both the shell and the cushioning. Unless the perforations can be formed without damage to the ball, it is envisaged that the shell may be corrugated and that the perforations are located in the troughs thereof.
The shin and thigh portions may be articulately joined but it will be appreciated that separate portions, as described above, will, all considerations being equal, be sufficient to constitute an excellent combination.
Embodiment of th invention An embodiment of the invention is described hereunder with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa sectional plan view of the invention; Figures2 and 3 are side views as fitted to a leg.
Reference to Figure 1 illustrates the construction of the padding 10 where the shell 12 of rigid material is padded with cushioning material 14. Meansfor strapping the padding to the body is provided by a VELCRO strip 16 which may of course be replaced by a buckle and strap.
In Figure 2the leg is protected by a padding 18 which covers the ankle, shin and knee. A second padding 20 is provided to protect a portion ofthethigh.
In Figure 3 the lower portion 18 is supplemented by an upper padding 22 designed to protect the wholethigh.
Variations ofthe combination and size ofthe padding sections may be made to suit requirements.
