Abstract

A cable gripping device comprises first and second parts 22, 23 which can be located within an aperture 21 in the body part 10 of a component such as a fuel injection nozzle. The outer part 22 defines a passage leading to a channel defined between the parts by a groove 27 in the outer part, and the part 23 has cable gripping elements 28 which are aligned with the groove to grip a cable laid in the groove. The parts are retained within the aperture by a pin 26 which extends through aligned apertures 24, 25 in the body part 10 and the outer part 22. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cable gripping device This invention relates to a cable gripping device for incorporation within the body part of a component, to grip a cable or cables and to prevent strain in the cable or cables being transmitted to an electrical terminal or terminals located in the body part.
An application for such a gripping device is to be found in a fuel injector utilised for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine, the injector including a movable valve member and an electrical transducer responsive to the movement of the valve member. The injector is intended to be mounted on an internal combustion engine and to have a cable or cables connected thereto through which signals from the transducer can be supplied to an electrical fuel control system. It is desired to avoid the use of connectors on the exterior of the injector body and therefore the cable or cables are connected directly to terminal pins on a part of the transducer. The cable gripping device is reguired to ensure that any strain applied to the cable or cables exterior of the injector, is not transmitted to the aforesaid terminal or terminals.
The object of the invention is to provide such a gripping device in a simple and convenient form.
According to the invention a cable gripping device comprises first and second parts which can be assembled within an aperture in the body part of the component, said first and second parts when in assembled relationship defining between them a channel or channels to receive a cable or cables, at least one of said parts being formed with gripping elements which project into said channel or channels to grip the cable or cables therein, one of said parts being apertured to receive a retaining device whereby the parts can be retained within said aperture.
An example of a cable gripping device in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of part of a fuel injector, and Figure 2 is a sectional plan view on the line X-X of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the fuel injector comprises a generally cylindrical body part 10 which as shown in the plan view, is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed flats 11 which lead down to surfaces not shown, engageable in use by a clamping arrangement.
The part 10 mounts a fuel injection nozzle assembly which includes a valve member which is urged by a spring to the closed position and which can be opened by fuel under pressure conveyed to the nozzle assembly from an inlet 12 by way of a passage 13 formed in the body part. The inlet 12 in use, is connected to the outlet of a high pressure fuel injection pump.
The injector also incorporates an electrical transducer generally indicated at 13A the transducer being located within a cylindrical chamber 14 formed in the body part. The transducer comprises an annular winding 15 which is wound in a former 16 located within the chamber 14. Projecting into the former is a magnetic pole piece 17 which is of hollow form and movable into the pole piece is a rod-like magnetic core 18 which conveniently forms part of the aforesaid valve member. As the core 18 moves into the pole piece upon lifting of the valve member by the fuel under pressure, the inductance of the winding 15 is varied and this change of inductance is utilised in an external fuel control circuit to provide an indication of the movement of the valve member.
The ends of the winding 15 are connected to a pair of terminal posts 19 which are secured within the former 16 the latter conveniently being formed from non-conducting material.
The posts have connected thereto as for example by soldering, cables 20 which lead to the aforesaid fuel control circuit.
Formed in the side wall of the body part 10 is a cylindrical aperture 21, the aperture extending inwardly so as to open at least over its lower portion, into the chamber 14.
Mounted within the aperture is the gripping device which comprises a first part 22 and a second part 23 formed from insulating material. The two parts are of generally cylindrical section and are of a size such that they can be slidably inserted into the aperture. The inner face of the second part is radiused to a radius which is slightly larger than the outer radius of the former 16 to avoid the application of mechanical pressure and in order to secure the parts in position within the aperture the first part 22 is provided with a through bore 24 which aligns with compiementary apertures 25 in the body part to permit the insertion of a retaining pin 26.
The two parts define between them a channel to receive the cables 20 and as will be seen from the drawings, the part 22 is formed with a groove 27 which extends downwardly substantially parallel to the axis of the injector but before reaching the lower surface of the part, extends at right angles and serves as an entrance passage for the cables. The part 23 serves to close the lower portion of the groove 27 but it defines a notch 27A through which the cables can extend from the channel to the terminal posts. Moreover, the portion of the part 23 lying below the notch 27A and which is aligned with the channel, defines gripping elements in the form of teeth 28 which grip the cables.
In assembly the gripping elements serve to grip the cables within the channel 27 to prevent the cables being drawn through the channel and preventing also, the application of load to the terminal posts. Moreover, the fact that the cables are bent through 90" further acts to prevent any tension applied to the cable from exterior of the injector being transmitted to the terminal posts. The two parts of the gripping device can be readily assembled into the aperture once the transducer has been located in position, and secured therein using the aforesaid pin 26.
