Description

SPECIFICATION Packaging of a flat object This invention relates to the packaging of a flat object having a protruberance on its rear surface.
According to this invention there is provided a package comprising a flat object having a protruberance on its rear surface, a card which rests against the rear surface of the flat object and has a cut-out which surrounds the protruberance, and a plastics cover which fits over the front of the flat object and is heat sealed to the card.
The flat object may be in the form of a clock, the subject of European Patent Application No. 85 300573.4 and the plastics cover may be transparent so that the face of the clock and its hands are visible.
If a side of the protruberance is flat, it is preferred to provide the card with a flap which rests against that side.
In one embodiment the protruberance is rectangular and the card has two parallel flaps which rest against opposed sides of the protruberance.
In a preferred embodiment, one flat side of the protruberance has a hook projecting therefrom and the corresponding flap is in two portions and arranged to engage opposite sides of the book.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a side view of a package in accordance with this invention; Figure 2 is a partial rear view; Figure 3 is a sectional view along the lines 111-111 of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a partial sectional view along the lines IV - IV of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a rear view of a card forming part of the package by itself and before assembly into the package; and Figure 6 is a front view of the package.
The package is designed for packaging clocks in accordance with those described in European Patent Application No. 85 3000573.4. Such a clock has a reversible face and generally is a flat object with a rear protruberance which is generally rectangular.
Referring to the drawings, the face 1 of the clock is visible only in Figure 6. The package has a card 2 having a rectangular opening 3 along the top and bottom edges of which there are formed flaps 4 and 5 respectively; the flaps 4 and 5 projects towards each other before assembly.
The clock has a generally circular base 6 carrying on its rear the rectangular projection 7 and covered on its front by the face; the rectangular protuberance has itself an upwardly projecting hook 8. In assembly, the rectangular protruberace 7 is pushed through the opening 3 pushing aside the flaps 4 and 5 so that they are transverse to the main part of the card 2 until the base 6 rests against the front surface of the card 2. The upper flap 4 has a central cut-away 9 which is engaged by the hook 8. In this position a plastic blister 10 is positioned to surround the circular face 6 of the clock and is heat sealed along its edge to the card 2.
The package is sold to customers and is suspended in the shop by a hook or the like which is passed through the slot 11 at the top of the card 2.
In Figure 6 the hands of the clock are denoted at 12.
