Abstract
A woven fabric particularly for medical and/or surgical purposes is described in which the weft threads are spaced apart and are at least in pairs in contiguous relationship. The woven fabric is used to form self-adhesive, crepe bandages and surgical swabs. The yarns may be viscose rayon or cotton bulked with different amounts of twist. An adhesive coating may be added.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Woven fabric
This invention relates to a woven fabric and in particularto a fabric suitablefor use for medical and for surgical purposes.
Fabrics in the form of gauze having warp and weft threads of uniform or different consistencies are well known. The object of providing fabrics having warp andweftthreadsofdifferentconsistenciesistoincrease the absorbency rate of the fabric when used for medical orsurgical purposes. This however has the disadvantagethatthe mass per area ofthefabric is increased.
It is an object of the invention to provide a woven fabric suitable for medical and/or surgical purposes.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a woven fabric particularly for medical and/ or surgical purposes in which the weft threads are spaced apart and are at least doubled in contiguous relationship.
Preferablytheweftthreads are doubled and are spaced equallyapartand preferablyform a rectangular pattern.
The warp and weft threads preferably extend at right anglesto each other. Preferablythedoubleweft threads touch each othertoform a substantially com- posite weft.
The individual threads of the warp and weft are preferably of uniform consistency. Alternatively the weft threads arethickerthan thewarpthreads.
Preferablythewarpand/ortheweftthreadsare looped to provide for cr & iore ping ofthe fabric. The warp threads are preferably of a larger loop and spaced apart a greater distance from the weft threads.
According to another aspect of the invention a method of manufacturing fabrics comprises the steps of weaving a warp thread with a weft thread in which eitherthewarp ortho weft has at least two threads in contiguous relationship.
The threads are preferably manufactured from cot ton or rayon ora mixture of cotton and rayon yarns.
Preferably the method includes the step of looping the warp orweftthreads during weaving. Theweft threads are preferably the composite th read.
Embodiments ofthe invention are described by wayofexamplewith referencetotheaccompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an enlarged view of a gauze fabric manu factured according to the invention; and Figures2and 3 showfurtherviews of gauze in which the threads are looped.
Referring to the drawings a bandage cloth 10 comprises warp threads 12 interwoven with weft threads 14. The weftthreads 14 are composite threads com- prising two in number and disposed in contiguous relationship.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3 a fabric 16 is provided in which the warp threads 18 are looped to varying extentto provideacrepefabnc.
The fabrics 10,16 are manufactured by inserting more than oneweftthread at a time through the shed in the weaving process. This construction is produced by either ply-winding theweftyarn or by supplying morethan oneweftthread to the weft insertion device, or by having more than one weft insertion device.
The fabric is formed as a stretch bandage cloth or as a gauze suitable for medical orsurgical purposes. In the case of stretch bandage cloth, a guttered or unguttered stretch fabric in the full piece is manufactured from cotton or rayon our a mixture of cotton and rayon yarns. The fabric is made from a mixture of both soft twist yarn and high twist yarn with a twist factor greater than 6. The fabric may be spread with an adhesive. In the case of gauze a product in the full width is manufactured from cotton or rayon or a mix tureofcottonand rayon. The manufacturing process results in a product that has unusual interstitial areas between the weft threads.
An advantage of the invention is that the construction results in increased production rate for both stretch bandages and the gauze. With stretch bandage cloth there are improved physical properties such as a "cling" effect attained by an increase in the crepefactorand also increased stretch and regain properties when compared with a stretch bandage having the same number of weft threads per stated distance, but with a construction produced by sup- plying only onethread to the shed in the weaving machine atone time. The fabric is rougher and tends to "cling" to itselfbetterdueto the warp thread being a greater distance apart from the weftth reads.
With the gauze, when it is made into swabs, there are superior properties such as improved handle and increased holding capacity which results in improved swabbing and absorbency performance. The mass per area and threads perunitarea of the fabric is unchanged. The fabric provides a better surface ten- sion duetothe parallel arrangementofthethreads.
Claims (4)
1. A woven fabric particularly for medical and/or surgical purposes in which the weft threads are spaced apart and are at least doubled in contiguous relationship.
2. Awoven fabricas claimed in claim 1 inwhich the weft threads are doubled and are spaced equally apart.
3. Awoven fabric as claimed in claim 2 in which the warp and weft threads extend at rightanglesto each other and the double weft threads touch each otherto form a substantially composite weft.
4. Awoven fabric as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3 in which the warp and/orweftthreads are twisted and looped to provideforcreping ofthefabric.
