Abstract

217,854. Linden, L. Dec. 29, 1923. Purifying liquids; separating by gravity. - Liquids of different density, such as water and oil, or liquids and solids, are separated by subjecting the flowing mixture to changes of direction and then allowing it to expand outwards over an inclined or horizontal sheet. Mixture supplied by a pipe 2 is agitated by air or other fluid or chemical agent admitted through inlets 10. It passes over the edge of a collector 12, downwards between the collector and a partition 15, and upwards between the partition and the funnelshaped bottom 4 of the tank 1. It finally expands over the sheet 5, above which are arranged collectors 6 for the light mattex to be separated. Heavy matters settle on the plane 5 or in the collectors 12, 17, which are provided with outlets 13, 16. Vertical partitions or traps 8 and inlets 9 for air or other fluid are provided between the collectors 6. Liquid flows away through outlets 7. Mechanical agitating devices may be provided in the pipe 2 or in place of the inlets 9.
