Abstract

217,297. Lilly, J. March 10, 1923. Rotary disc valves; actuating mechanism.- A spraying nozzle for a syringe, Fig. 2, comprises a diaphragm 3 fixed in the front end of the syringe casing and a valve-member 13 associated therewith, controlling the fluid supply to a pair of passages 9, 10. One passage 9 leads to a jet nozzle formed in a screwed spigot 6 concentric with the diaphragm, and the passage 10 to the space 5 between a rose-member 4, screwing over the spigot 6, and the diaphragm 3. The apparatus may, therefore, by holding it in desired position indicated by a projecting lip 16, be used to give either a spray or single jet, according to whether the ball-valve 13 closes the passage 9 or the passage 10, respectively. The ball 13 rolls in a cone-shaped cage 11 formed separately from the diaphragm 3 to facilitate fixing it accurately in position relative to the seatings formed in the diaphragm, and is prevented from leaving the cage by a cross-bar 12. The spigot 6 may be arranged to project the jet at an angle to the axis. particularly when the apparatus is intended for use in cleaning motor cars, or a smaller spray nozzle may be substituted for the jet. Fig. 4 illustrates a modified form adapted for attachment to a hose. The diaphragm 45 is formed in a hose attachment-membed 27 and, by turning the nozzle members 17, 18 relatively to the diaphragm, the passage 32 in the diaphragm may be placed in communication with a passage 23 leading to the jet nozzle 24, or with a passage leading to the space 26 between the nozzle members 17 and 18, when a spray is required, or the supply may be cut off when the passage 32 is out of alignment with either of these passages. An indicator 43 is provided as before to show the position of the valve. The diaphragm is rotatably mounted upon a shank 36 attached to the nozzle member 17. a washer 29, prevented from rotation relatively to the diaphragm, being mounted between them. The bearing surfaces of the valve which may be conical instead of flat as shown, are pressed together by a spring 37 mounted on the shank 36.
