Abstract

A protective moulding e.g. of plastics for securing to walls adjacent a corner comprises two peripheral sections integrally connected by a flexible web.

Description

SPECIFICATION Flexible corner moulding This invention concerns a corner moulding which may be used as a one-piece moulding for protecting radius or angled wall corners.
Corner mouldings for industrial, institutional and commercial uses should be hard in order to adequately protect the underlying wall.
However, not all corners are at right angles, which makes application of rigid right angular mouldings impractical and somewhat unattractive.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved corner moulding which includes flexible and rigid integral segments and which may be generally rigid and adaptable to conform around different shaped corners.
According to this invention there is provided a corner moulding for a wall comprising an extrusion of continuous cross-section having first and second sections formed of material which is substantially rigid and integrally connected together by a web of flexible material, the first and second sections being capable of attachment to adjacent walls and the web capable of application to the corner part between said adjacent walls, the web being more flexible than said sections.
The corner moulding of this invention may comprise a dual-hardness continuous extrusion of two rigid segments integrally connected by a flexible segment. The rigid segments provide adequate protection of the wall while the flexible segment allows the moulding to be form fitted about almost any shape of corner, inside or outside type, to provide an attractive, low or maintenance-free cover.
In order that the invention may be readily carried into effect embodiments thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings by way of example only and in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a flexible corner moulding, Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the moulding in use on an outside radius corner, Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of the moulding in use on an obtuse angle outside corner, and Figure 5 is a perspective view of the moulding of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the corner moulding 10 of this invention is preferably formed of plastic material, such as polyvinyl chloride (pvc). In the preferred form shown in the drawing, moulding 10 is defined by three continuous distinct but integral sections 12, 14 and 16 of generally uniform thickness. Section 16 forms a web between sections 12 and 14.
Moulding 10 can be formed by a process of dual durometer extrusion. In this process, all three moulding sections 12, 14 and 16 are co-extruded into a one-piece moulding.
Moulding sections 12 and 14 are formed from a semi-rigid to rigid pvc extrusion, ranging from 58-71 hardness rating when measured on a Shore durometer, with the preferred hardness being 69-71. Web section 16 is formed from a flexible pvc extrusion ranging from 65-93 hardness rating when measured on a Shore durometer with the preferred hardness being between 75-79. Also, the elastomeric properties of web section 16 allow it to be stretched up to 360% of its original length, while the properties of sections 12, 14 may not permit stretching tq any appreciable degree.
Moulding 10 is generally used as a protective and/or decorative cover for a wall corner such as outside corner 18 which is of radiused configuration as shown in Fig. 3, or angled configuration 18' as shown in Fig. 4.
As seen in Fig. 4, a strip of double-sided tape 20,22 is affixed to each section 12 and 14.
To apply the moulding 10 to a wall corner 18, section 10 is positioned upon a wall 24 and affixed thereto by tape 20. Web 16 is then drawn across corner 18 until a sung fit is achieved. Section 14 is then affixed to adjacent wall 26 by tape 22. When so secured, the moulding 10 forms a durable, ornamental cover about a wall corner 18. Areas 19 of reduced wall thickness (if present) allow for increased adaptability to the corner configuration.

A corner moulding for a wall comprising an extrusion of continuous cross-section having first and second sections formed of material which is substantially rigid and integrally connected together by a web of flexible material, the first and second sections being capable of attachment to adjacent walls and the web capable of application to the corner part between said adjacent walls, the web being more flexible than said sections.
2. A moulding as claimed in claim 1, wherein first and second sections and the web are all of the same material in the form of a dual-hardness continuous extrusion.
3. A moulding as claimed in either preceding claim, wherein the sections and web are formed of polyvinyl chloride.
4. A moulding as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the sections have a hardness of 58-71, preferably 69-71 when measured by Shore durometer and the web has a hardness of 69-93, preferably 75-79 also when measured by Shore durometer.
