Description

SPECIFICATION Positioning device for a carriage assembly Carriage assemblies used for transportation of infants or small children have been known for many years. Generally, such conventional carriages are structured to include a positioning means for adjusting the orientation of the seat assembly of the carriage assembly. In other words, by means of the positioning means, the seat assembly is capable of facing either toward the front or rear of the carriage assembly.
However, while positioning means of the type set farth above are well known, a number of these positioning means include structural features that render the carriage assemblies which employ such positioning means less than desirable. For example, frequently the positioning means, with a connecting bolt, connects the support element of the carriage assembly and the support frame which holds the seat assembly. In case the connecting bolt is inadvertently loosened as an occupant is seated in the seat assembly, the occupant may fall down from the seat assembly and therefore may get hurt. Also, since the positioning means of the conventional carriage assemblies usually do not include a stop means for orientation of the seat assembly, the seat assembly may sometimes be inadvertently adjusted to an over-inclined position by the operator, this may also cause the occupant to fall down from the over-inclined seat assembly.
Accordingly, there is a need for a carriage assembly to provide an improved positioning device which is structured to provide security features when the occupant is seated in the seat assembly of the carriage assembly. Such a preferred positioning device would connect the support frame of the seat assembly and the support element of the carriage assembly fixedly. In addition, such a preferred positioning structure should include a stop means for preventing the seat assembly from being inadvertently adjusted to an over-inclined pqsition.
The present invention relates to an improvement in the Positioning device of the conventional type of carriage assembly. The positioning device in accordance with the present invention mainly comprises a first connector connected to the support frame of the seat assembly, and a second connector connected to the support element of the carriage assembly. The first and second connectors are in a manner disposed in frictional and slideable engaged relation to one another so as to position the seat assembly to face either toward the front or rear of the carriage assembly, or selectively, position the seat assembly between an upright or substantially horizontally inclined position.Further, the positioning device includes a stop structure which may restrict the adjustment of the seat assembly in order to prevent the seat assembly from being adjusted to an over-inclined position inadvertently.
For a fuller understanding of the nature of the present invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carriage assembly in an operative position which employs the positioning device according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the carriage assembly of Figure 1 wherein the different positions of the seat assembly are shown in solid and broken lines.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of the positioning device according to the present invention; and Figure 4 is a section view showing structural details of the positioning device of the present invention.
As best shown in Figures 1 and 2, the carriage assembly generally indicated as 10 is the type having a seat assembly 12 held by a support frame 1.
Further, the carriage assembly 10 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 also includes a first and a second support elements 20 and 21 which are substantially in the form of circular tube. Such a carriage assembly 10 is structured to hold an occupant in the seat assembly 12 which may be positioned to face either toward the front or rear of the carriage assembly 10, or alternatively, the seat assembly 12 is selectively positionable between an upright or substantially horizontally inclined position, as shown in Figure 2.
Positioning and securement of the seat assembly 12 is accomplished through the provision of a positioning device as generally indicated as 30 and as shown in detail in Figure 3 and 4. For purposes of clarity, only a single positioning device 30 will be described in detail as represented in Figure 3 and 4. However, it should be noted that a positioning device 30 of the type described is located on each side of the seat assembly 12.
With reference to Figure 3 and 4, each of the positioning device 30 according to the present invention includes a first connector 31 fixedly attached by two bolts 32 to the respective support frame 1 of the seat assembly 12, and a second connector 41 also fixedly attached by two bolts 33 to the second support element 21 of the carriage assembly 10.
The first connector 31 has two segmental slots 34 and 35 disposed in radially opposed relation to one another. Each of the slots has a larger width at the ends 341 and 351 which are also disposed in radially opposed relation to one another. The first connector 31 is further provided with a central hole 36, around which a plurality of toothed structures (not shown in the drawings) are disposed for engaging with the second connector 41.
The second connector 41 also has a central hole 46, around which a neck 47 is extended outwardly for inserting into the central hole 36 of the first connector 31. The second connector 41 further provides with a plurality of toothed structures 48 around the central hole 46 which correspond to and are engageable with the toothed structures of the first connector 31. Also, the second connector 41 is provided with two protruding tubular structures 44 and 45 which are disposed in radially opposed relation to one another. It is noted that these tubular structures 44 and 45 are capable of passing through the respective slots 34 and 35. Furthermore, as best shown in Figure 3 and 4, a set rivet 7 is mounted in each of the tubular structures with its head exposed to the exterior of each tubular structure. It is noted that the diameter of the rivet head is larger than the width of the slots 34 and 35, and is smaller than the width of the ends 341 and 351 of the slots 34 and 35.
Referring again to Figure 3 and 4, a first and second cover members 8 and 9 and provided for enclosing the first and second connectors 31 and 41.
The first cover member 8 substantially takes the cap shape with its closed end provided with a penetrating hole 81 which is formed perpendicular to the axial direction of the first cover member 8. The second cover member 9 is substantially a hollow cylindrical cap with two holes 91 disposed in aligned relation to tone another for penetration of the support element 21 of the carriage assembly 10.
When assembling, the support frame 1 passes through the penetrating hole 81 of the first cover member 8, and then the first connector 31 together with the first cover member is fixed on the support frame 1 by means of bolts 32. The support element 21 passes through holes 91 of the second cover member 9, and then the second connector 41 together with the second cover member 9 is fixed on the support element 21 by means of bolts 33. A spring 6 is received in the central hole 36 of the first connector 31. The tubular structures 44 and 45 of the second connector 41 are respectively passed through the ends 341, 351 of the slots 34, 35, and thus the second connector 41 can be turned relative to the first connector 31 with its protruding tubular structures 44, 45 sliding within the segmental slots 34, 35 of the first connector 31.Furthermore, a threaded shaft 5 and a rotable knob 2 are provided for coupling the first and the second connectors 31, 41 fixedly.
In the preferred embodiment described above, the orifice diameter of the first cover member 8 is smaller than that of the second cover member 9 such that when the first connector 31 is connected to the second connector 41, the first and second cover assembly 8, 9 will constitute an enclosure for protection of the first and second connectors 31, 41. It is noted that the first and second connectors 31, 41 are connected to one another with their toothed structures in a frictional engagement relation such that in this event the support frame 1 and therefore the seat assembly 12 can be fixed at a specified position such as at an operative position facing forward the front of the carriage assembly 10, as shown in Figure 1.It is further noted that the spring 6 received within the central hole 36 and also within the neck 47 of the second connector 41 is passed over the threaded shaft 5, and has the tendency to push the first and second connectors 31, 41 away. Besides, the relative movement of the first connector 31 to the second connector 41 is restricted by the sliding movement of the protruding tubular structures 44, 45 within the segmental slots 34, 35 such that the relative adjustment of the seat assembly 12 to the support element of the carriage assembly 10 can be restricted within a specified range, for example, the seat assembly 12 may be positioned in a position facing toward the front or rear of the carriage assembly, as shown in broken lines in Figure 2. It is therefore noted that the carriage assembly 10 employing the positioning device 30 according to the present invention can prevent the seat assembly 12 from being adjusted to an over-inclined position.
Although the present invention is described in conjunction with a preferred embodiment and the accompanying drawings, it is apparent that many variations and modifications can also be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention and the following claim.
