Description
SPECIFICATION
A bumper bar for a motor vehicle bumper
The present invention relates to a bumper bar for a motor vehicle bumper which extends along the centre and angularly bent end sections of the bumper. the bumper bar including a reinforcing insert provided with a cover which is'foamed about the reinforcing insert on all sides and retaining elements for the fastening of the bumper are attached to the reinforcing insert.
In a known bumper bar of the aforementioned type (U.S. Patent 3,841,682), the reinforcing insert is made from a unitary single part, whereby for the manufacture of this insert a relatively large pressing work tool or die is necessary which entails high costs.
Additionally, it has been found that the onepiece reinforcing insert is difficult to handle, in particular, the angularly bent end sections thereof, are easily bent during transport. Such structural parts lead to a rejection rate that causes high costs.
It is the object of the present invention to so construct a bumper bar that it can be manufactured with the use of simple and costfavourable work tools and the dimensional accuracy of the reinforcing insert can be maintained.
The present invention consists in a bumper bar for a motor vehicle bumper which extends along the centre and angularly bent end sections of the bumper, the bumper bar comprising a reinforcing insert provided with a cover portion which is foamed about the reinforcing insert on all sides, and retaining members for fastening the bumper bar attached to the reinforcing insert the reinforcing insert being formed by a plurality of portions which overlap one another to form connection zones, each connecting zone having a retaining element extending through said portions which serves for the fastening of the bumper bar.
The advantages principally achieved with the present invention reside in that owing to the multi-part construction of the reinforcing insert, a simple manufacture of the bumper bar is achieved because the individual parts can be manufactured in small, cost-favourable work tools or dies.
The dimensional accuracy for the end product of the bumper bar is improved by the ability of the tolerance compensation between the individual parts of the reinforcing insert during manufacture. Since the individual parts of the reinforcing inserts are connected into a structural unit by foaming the cover portion about the reinforcing insert in a corresponding work tool, a welded or threaded connection between the parts of the reinforcing insert can be dispensed with. The foam forming the cover portion can enter through apertures in the centre part and lateral parts provided preferably at the connecting zones so that a good connection between the mutually attached parts of the reinforcing insert and the cover portion is achieved.
The retaining elements arranged in the connecting zones effect a functionally correct connection between the individual parts of the reinforcing insert.

Figure 3 and reversed;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken along the line V-V of
Figure 4 and reversed; and
Figure 6 is a partial elevational view taken in the direction of the arrow T shown in
Figure 5.
Referring now to the drawings a bumper 1 is held in position on a vehicle body 3 by two retaining members 2 arranged on both sides of the longitudinal centre plane A-A. The bumper 1 which is made of aluminum, steel or plastics material, has an approximately Ushaped profile as viewed in cross section and shown in Figure 4, the open side 4 of the profile being directed toward the vehicle body 3. A bumper bar 6 which is attached to an approximately vertically extending web 5 of the bumper 1, is approximately trapezoidal shaped in cross-section.
The bumper bar 6 is formed by a cover portion 7 of a yielding material and a reinforcing insert 8 embedded in the cover portion 7.
A foamed material, preferably polyurethane foam, is used as material for the cover portion 7, whereas in contrast, the reinforcing insert 8 consists of metal (steel or aluminum) or plastics material.
The bumper bar 6 extends along a centre section 9 and bent-off end sections 11 and 11' of the bumper 1, which preferably cover a vehicle body member 10. The reinforcing insert 8 which extends along a web 5 of the bumper 1 has a centre portion 12 and two side portions 13 adjoining same, with the connecting zones 14 of the centre portion 12 and side portions 13 are attached to one another in overlapping relationship. The overlapping area B (Figure 3) is approximately 30mm to 50mm.
The centre portion 12 extends in the vehicle transverse direction C-C (Figure 2) and is matched to the curved configuration of the bumper 1, terminating in free outwardly disposed ends 15. The two side portions 13 have a more pronounced curvature in an area 16 adjoining the connecting zone 14.
The centre portion 12 and the side portions 13 are provided, at least within the connecting zones 14, with a profiling 17 effecting a form-locking connection. The profiling 17 may be U-shaped, V-shaped, W-shaped or the like.
Fixing of the centre portion 12 and side portion 13 in the longitudinal and vertical directions is achieved by the profiling 17, however, adjustment in the vehicle transverse direction C-C is made possible thereby.
As shown in Figure 5, the side portion 13 extends at a smaller distance with respect to the web 5 of the bumper 1 than the centre portion 12. At each connecting zone 14 a retaining element 18 is provided at the centre portion 12 which is preferably formed by a threaded bolt 1 9 provided with a bolt head.
The threaded bolt 19 is securely connected to the centre portion 12 by brazing, welding or the like, and the bolt head is supported on the side 20 of the centre portion 12 opposite the web 5 within the area of a U-shaped indentation 21 (Figure 5). The bolt 19 extends through the centre portion 12, the side portion 13 and the web 5 of the bumper 1. To fasten the bumper bar 6, a nut 23 is threaded over the bolt 1 9 from the inside 22 of the bumper 1.
Adjustment of the side portions 13 relative to the centre portion 12 is effected by slotted openings 24 (Figure 6) which extend in the vehicle transverse direction, provided in the side portions 13 within the area of the connecting zones 14, the slot openings 24 receiving the threaded bolt 19 (Figure 6). For fastening the bumper bar 6, in addition to the threaded bolts 19 arranged at the connecting zones 14, further threaded bolts 19 are provided at the centre portion 12.
Within the area of the side portions 13, the retaining elements are formed by sheet metal screws 25 which are screwed from the inside 22 of the bumper 1 into sheet metal throughholes 26 provided in the side portion 13.
For optimizing the structural unit consisting of the side portions 13 and centre portions 12, apertures 27 are provided in these parts, preferably at the connecting zones 14, through which the foam forming the cover portion 7 can enter. An effective connection between centre portion 12, side portions 13 and cover portion 7 is thus established.
The bumper bar 6 is made according to the following method:
The centre portion 12 and the two side portions 13 are made in simple pressing work tools. Thereafter, the threaded bolts 19 are attached at the centre portion 12. Subsequently, the two side portions 13 and the centre portion 12 are placed into a foaming work tool with the side portions 13 overlapping the centre potion 12 so that the threaded bolt 19 extends through the slot opening 24 of the side portion 13. After alignment of the side portions 13 relative to the centre portion 12, the cover portion 7 is made by foaming-out the forming work tool, the foam effecting a secure connection between the parts 12 and 13.
