Abstract

A vehicle exterior, side, recoil or self return mounted, rear view mirror, embodying within its mirror housing body 6, components required for one or more of these additional functions, direction indicator, hazard warning, parking lamp, headlamp reflector. A lens 5 covering these components is impact resistant and a part of the lens positioned at an outer edge or corner of the body 6 is angled shaped or screened from the line of sight 13 of a driver 17 to prevent dazzle, while at the same time the lens is visible throughout an arc of 180 DEG (14) from front to rear of the vehicle. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Combination mirror The combination mirror is an exterior, side mounting type, rear view mirror for motor vehicles, providing one or more extra functions within or on the mirror housing body in addition to the normal rear view function. There are several important advantages to be gained by combining certain accessories with a rear view mirror unit, in this case the rear view unit being: an exterior side of vehicle rear view mirror, more particularly of a door, window frame or door frame mounting type. The additional functions relate specifically to those of: Direction indication signal, Hazard warning signal, Parking light, Traffic headlamp reflector.The main advantages to be gained by positioning these functions with this type of rear view mirror are: Increased conspicuity to other road users, particularly cyclists and pedestrians, and also to vehicles approaching from the side ortravelling alongside. The height of this positioning places them closet two eye level than most other usual positions. This positioning also places them, in most circumstances, at the widest part of the vehicle, and in the case of both the parking light and headlamp reflector especially, helps to indicate the width of the vehicle at night and/or during bad weather. Another advantage is that a more streamlined and aesthetically appealing vehicle could be achieved than if these functions were positioned separately.A few disadvantages however, do arise with this type of configuration, in particular, there is a danger that the driver of the vehicle to which units of this type are fitted, may be distracted or dazzled by the direction indicator light or the headlamp reflector. There is also a risk if some types of rear view mirror mountings are used, that if the unit is inadvertantly knocked or hit, damage may result to the lens of a function or the unit may remain in a misaligned position rendering the unit less effective and/or illegal. The purpose of this invention is to retain the desirable aspects of a combination mirror unit, whilst attempting to overcome these disadvantages.

The combination mirror comprises: a door, window frame or door frame mounted rear view mirror which incorporates within the body, housing the mirror, an electrically operated light source, connected to a flasher unit and switch within the vehicle enclosed by a transluscent lens of glass or plastic material, provided with light diffusive means, such as: internal grooving, frosting, faceting or reeding, and transluscent colouring (amber) means provided, either by the lens, by a coloured bulb or by an additional lens, for the purpose of a vehicle direction indicator. The most important aspect of the combination mirror is the correct siting and shaping of the external lens, as this can determine the range of positions that it can be viewed from, and it can also determine whether the driver is distracted or dazzled.It has been found that an ideal position for this lens is at the outside edge of the mirror body, but set at such an angle and/or shielded by an extended or flared rim or flange, so as to conceal it from the driving position. It is in most circumstances possible, solely by shaping the lens appropriately, to retain visability of the indicator through at least one hundred and eighty degrees from a line parallel to the side of the vehicle, whilst concealing it from the driving position. On large vehicles or where a mirror has a higher mounting position, the indicator and/or reflector could be sited at the bottom edge or corner of the mirror body, using a similar shaping or shielding technique. An automatic or manually operated dimmer switch may be provided to reduce the brightness of the indicator at night.The direction indicator provided by this design would normally be used in addition to the usual front and rear vehicle indicators, serving the purpose of a side repeater indicator or an extra indicator, it may also be used in this way as a hazard warning device.

The combination mirror may also incorporate, either with the indicator or alone, a lens of glass or plastic material, provided with suitable reflective means on its internal surface and appropriately coloured with one or more colours, for the purpose of a traffic headlamp reflector. The same principles of shaping or shielding would be necessary for this lens, as this function could also distract or dazzle a driver. An electric lamp for use as a parking light together with a suitable lens, may also be incorporated with one or more of the other functions, or on its own. This would seem to be an ideal position for a parking light, which could be used together with the normal vehicle sidelights, or on its own where parking lights are not required by law.Not only does a parking light in this position indicate the width of the vehicle at night or in bad weather, it also helps to prevent pedestrians who might walk close to a vehicle, from accidently colliding with the rear view mirror in the dark. As this is not intended as a main parking light, a neon type bulb should be sufficiently bright and would consume only a small amount of electricity, enabling it to be left switched on for long periods. An automatic light sensitive or photoelectric cell operated switch, preferably with a manual overide, could be connected, for automatic switching on in dark conditions. The lens of both the parking light and the headlamp reflector, may be divided into more than one colour, for example: while or clear facing the front of the vehicle and red facing the rear.All lenses are preferably made flush with the mirror body on all edges to achieve the best aerodynamic effect, and to decrease the risk of accidental damage, it is desirable that they are moulded from a tough impact resistant plastic, such as: Polycarbonate or a Polyvinyl chloride of suitable flexibility. Where a special rim is used to help conceal a function from the driving position, it could be made adjustable by means of a hinge, pivot or spring loading against the adjustable screw, so that it remains effective even when the angle of the mirror body is remains effective even when the angle of the mirror body is adjusted in relation to the vehicle. With a direction indicator especially, it is importanttha its position is not inadvertanly disturbed, consequently some types of rear view mirror mountings may not be suitable.It is essential that a combination mirror with this function should have a mounting which incorporates a self return or realignment mechanism. A suitable type would be one where the mirror itself is adjustable within the mirror body, manually or manually by remote control or electrically operated, while the body remains in a set position with a spring back, self return, if accidentally knocked.Another suitable type would be one where the body is pivoted to move horizontally about a vertical axis, connected to a spring return mechanism having its base fixing or seating mounted rotatably, in a manner which allows itto swivel in unison with the mirror body until a desired adjustment is achieved, whereupon, that adjustment is maintained by means of pressure or a clamping action upon a part of the spring base fixing, providing the mirror body with a spring back action to the adjusted position if accidentally knocked out of alignment, the pressure or clamping action being provided by a screw or releasable catch. The mirror may be pivoted within its housing or body to provide vertical adjustment. Mountings which use powerful magnets for a realignment mechanism could also be used.Any other types of mounting which provide a full self return, wherein the mirror body is automatically returned to its original position may be used, including any using electro magnets or electric motors, operated by the ignition switch or indicator switch.

The invention will now be described by way of non limititive example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a front of mirrorview of a side mirror with a diredtion indicator fitted at the outside edge of the mirror body.

Figure 2 illustrates a back of mirror view of a side mirrorwhich incorporates a direction indicator, a reflector lens and a parking light.

Figure 3 shows a top view of an example of combination mirror in cutaway section.

Figure 4 displays the range of vision necessary for a function with relation to other road users and the driving position Figure 5 demonstrates a method of achieving a suitable shape and angle for the lens of a function, in order to fulfil the overall objective of concealment from the driving position, while maintaining the full range of vision from outside the vehicle. Refering to the drawing, in Figure 1 a vehicle side mounting rear view mirror, with a mounting arm 4, incorporates within its body 6, an electrically operated flashing lightforthe purpose of a direction indicator. In this example a transluscent plastic amber coloured lens with light diffusive means 5 is sited on the specially angled outside edge 1. The lens 5 may be continued around the back of the mirror body 6, or a separate lens may be fitted at the back.A lens itself may be removable, or alternatively the whole or part of the back, to provide access to the bulb. The mirror 3 is recessed within the body 6 to create a rim, in this example the rim 2 on the outside edge 1 is specially shaped and extended, to help screen the indicator from the view of the driver.

In Figure 2 a vehicle side mounting mirror, with a mounting arm 4, incorporates within its body 6, two electrically operated light sources, one of which flashes, internal partitioning would separate the light from the two bulbs. As an insert within the body 6 and flush with it, is a panel consisting of three lenses 5,7 and 8, specially angled at the outside edge of the mirror body 6 and continued around the back. The lenses 5,7 and 8 provide the functions of indicator, reflector and parking light, and should suitably coloured. The reflector and parking light, and should be suitably coloured. The reflector and parking light lenses may each have a vertical join or division providing two colours, for example, red facing the rear of the vehicle and white or clear facing the front.

A flange or rim 2 helps screen the functions from the driving position.

In Figure 3 a cutaway section of another example demonstrates from a top view, a suitable shape for an indicator lens 5 which is fitted flush with the body 6,-access to the light bulb 10 is provided by means of one or more screws 9. The light bulb 10 is provided with a bulb holder 1 1,with electrical wiring 12 passing through the body 6 and the mounting arm 4 to the vehicle interion The mirror 3 has a shaped and extended rim 2 adjoining the lens 5, for the purpose of shielding the indicator from view from the driving position, in Figure 4 a representation of a top view of a vehicle demonstrates how a specially shaped indicator or reflector lens 5, can be viewed from a wide range of positions, whilst remaining concealed from the driver.In this example the lens 5 can be viewed from within a range of at least 180 degrees from a line of sight 16 drawn roughly parallel to the side of the vehicle and at a right angle to the back of the driving seat, for example: the lens can be easily -viewed from any position within the range shown by the arc 14. The line of-sight 15 from the driver 17 shows the normal rear view mirror function, while the line of sight 3 demonstrates how a suitable - angle given to the part of the lens 5, which is adjacent to the mirror, can succeed in concealing the lens from the driving position 17.

Figure 5 demonstrates a method of obtaining the type of angle most suitable for the section of indicator or reflector lens 5 adjacent to the mirror.

This Figure shows a combination mirror viewed from above and drawn in an outline representation only, with the lens 5 shown in section. The line 18 represents the side of a vehicle, to which the mirror body 6 is affixed by a mounting 4. The angie 20 is formed between the section of the lens 5 adjacent to the mirror3, and a line 22 drawn art a right angle 19 -to the side of the vehicle 18. It has been found generally that the angle 20 is required to be approxi mately 30 degrees or slightly more to achieve the objective of concealing the lens from the driving position, although the distance of the driving seat from the mirror, or the size of the mirror, can alter this slightly and should be taken into account. If this angle 20 is made too large, the lens 5 is rendered less visable from the rear of the vehicle, so a compromise may be necessary, and if required a screening rim fitted. With rear view mirrors which have a set angle of mounting 21,the necessary shape of the lens 5 can easily be determined, by calculating the angle 20, however, where the angle of mounting 21 is adjustable, the shape of the lens 5 would have to be estimated to suit the maximum forseeable adjustment of the angle 21, as an increase in the angle 21 would effect the required shape of the lens 5, in order to keep the size of the angle 20 constant. In some circumstances, fitting a shielding or screening rim or flange could provide an alternative solution, and setting the lens slightly back from the mirror side of the body may also help.

The shape of the mirror body may be varied, providing it is adequately sized and shaped to accomodate the necessary components. The shape of a lens may be varied, providing it remains within the specification: the part adjacent to the mirror being shaped, angled, or screened to conceal it from the driving position, whilst the complete lens remains visable from any point throughout an arc of at least 180 degrees measured horizontally from an exterior point close to the side of the vehicle.

Claims (12)

1. Acombination mirror comprising an exterior, side mounting, rear view mirror for motor vehicles, with a recoil or self return type mounting mechanism, and incorporating on a suitably sized and shaped mirror housing body unit, one or more transluscent, clear or coloured lenses of impact resistant material, provided where appropriate with light diffusive or light reflective means, and positioned at an edge or corner of the body unit, the part of a lens adjacent to the mirror being the body unit, that part of a lens adjacent to the mirror being specially angled in a manner causing its concealmenu from the driving position, whilst the complete lens remains visable from throughout an arc of at least 180 degrees measured horizontally from an exterior point close to the side of the vehicle, provision for access to one or more electrically operated light sourceswithin the body (separated where necessary by partitioning) and complete with any required electrical wiring and connections, and complete with any required electrical wiring and connections, hereby providing a unit which embo -dies one or more of the following functions additional to the rear view function, a direction indication signal, a hazard warning signal, a parking lamp, a traffic headlamp reflector.
2. A combination mirror as claimed in claim 1 wherein a rim being provided surrounding the mirror, and a part thereof being adjacent to one or more of the lenses, is specially shaped and/or extended and/or angled, in a manner suitable for the purpose of screening the said lens or lenses from view from the driving position.
3. A combination mirror as claimed in claim 1 wherein a rim or rim section adjacent to one or more of the lenses, is equipped with a mounting which enables adjustment.
4. A combination mirror as claimed in claim 1 wherein a parking lamp is incorporated using a neon type bulb.
5. A combination miror as claimed in claim 1 or claim 4 wherein a parking lamp is connected to a light sensitive switch.
6. A combination mirror as claimed in any preceding claim wherein a direction indicator is connected to a manually or automatically operated dimmer switch.
7. A combination mirror as claimed in any preceding claim wherein a reflector being provided, the lens is divided into more than one colour.
8. A combination mirror as claimed in any preceding claim wherein a parking light being provided, the lens is divided into more than one colour.
9. A combination mirror as claimed in any preceding claim wherein any lens is continued around the back of the mirror body.
10. Acombination mirror as claimed in any preceding claim wherein any function is provided with an additional lens.
11. A combination mirror as claimed in claim 9 or claim 10 wherein the edges of any lens is made flush with the body unit.
12. A combination mirrorsubstantially as de- scribed herein with reference to Figures 1-5 of the accompanying drawing.
