Description
SPECIFICATION
Geometric device
This invention relates to a universal geometric device which can be used for executing a large number of operations: drawing circles and straight lines by pencil, marker or ink; measuring and marking lengths and angles; defining the horizontal and inclination of surfaces; conducting calculations; or sharpening wooden and technical graphite pencils.
Most of the known universal geometric devices are adapted for executing only a few operations.
Those which have a larger number of possible operations are made as kits of pieces which have to be put together in a particular way before use.
Such devices are complicated in use, and have to be stored in disassembled state, in a suitable box.
In spite of that, number of possible operations is not large.
The object of this invention is to provide a geometric device suitable for executing a large number of operations, so that using this, and only this, device, drawing of geometric figures demanding full set of geometric accessories can be executed.
Besides, the device has to be compact, i.e. all of the parts needed for executing these operations must be on it or in it.
The present invention provides a geometric device which comprises a left leg and a right leg having rounded upper ends, an intermediate tile positioned between the rounded upper ends of the legs, and a first bolt connecting the legs and the tile, each leg having a longitudinal bore extending from their respective lower ends to near their upper ends, whereby a marker can be positioned in the bore of one leg, and a handle, needles and a pencil set comprising a lead, a cylindrical part and a lead carrier can be positioned in the bore of the other leg, respective leg bolts being positioned near the lower ends of the legs, whereby the positions of the respective parts within the bores can be regulated, the leg bolts having axes parallel to the axis of the first bolt.
The various embodiments of the geometric device according to this invention can be used for executing the following operations: - drawing circles by pencil or marker, both incorporated, in the same way as with a conventional pair of compasses; marking circles on different materials, with needles on both legs; in this arrangement, the device can be used for scaling and measuring the curve length.
- drawing straight lines by any of the incorporated drawing means, in the same way as with a ruler, with the possibility of measuring the length.
- drawing and measuring of angles, in the same way as with a conventional protractor. In a similar way, the device can be used for measuring and establishing the angle between two flat surfaces, either for external, or for internal angles.
- measuring the inclination of a flat surface (the angle between a flat surface and the horizontal).
- executing fundamental calculations by the incorporated calculator.
- sharpening pencils (wooden and technical graphite) by the incorporated sharpeners.
One embodiment of the geometric device according to this invention will be further described in detail with reference to the accompanying Drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents the geometric device according to this invention, in side and plan views,
Figure 2 is an overall view of the device,
Figure 3 is an overall view of the device in a disassembled condition,
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through the upper part of the device,
Figure 5 is a transverse section through the device in the part where measuring edges are situated,
Figure 6 is a longitudinal section of one leg of the device,
Figure 7 represents different combinations of needles, pencil and marker on the legs of the device,
Figure 8 represents parts located in the legs of the device and the way of packing thereof,
Figure 9 is an overall view of the device prepared for drawing circles by marker,
Figure 10 represents a way of using the device in drawing circles,
Figure 11 shows a detail of the upper part of the device, used for measuring angles,
Figure 12 shows a way of using the device for sharpening wooden pencils,
Figure 13 shows a way of using the device for sharpening technical graphite pencils,
Figure 14 is an overall view of the device prepared for measuring an external right angle,
Figure 15 is an overall view of the device prepared for measuring or drawing an angle of 30 , Figure 16 is an overall view of the device prepared for drawing and measuring a long straight line,
Figure 17 is an overall view of the device prepared for drawing right angles and measuring inner right angles.
Parts of the universal geometric device according to this invention are the following: left leg 1, right leg 2, intermediate tile 3 and an upper bolt 4 connecting the mentioned parts. The tile 3 has lateral threaded bore in which a small handle 5 with a threaded end is fastened, used for holding the device while drawing circles (Figure 4). As can be seen in Figure 5, both legs have longitudinal bores extending from the lower ends almost to the knuckle.
In these bores are positioned (Figure 8): marker 8 in the left leg, and handle 5, needles 6 and 6', and a pencil set in the right leg. The pencil set comprises: lead 8, cylindrical part 9 and lead carrier 10. The parts 5, 6, 6' and 7 are made in such a way that they can be connected with one another by threaded parts to constitute a complete pencil or marker.
On the lower ends of the legs 1 and 2 (Figure 3) are positioned leg bolts 12, with axes parallel to the axis of the upper bolt 4, crossing the axes of the longitudinal bores in the legs. Figure 6 shows how these bolts are used for fastening the parts positioned in the longitudinal bores, in a desired position. Near the bolts 12, each leg has a semicircular notch at the inner side, which notch opens into the respective longitudinal bore, and can be used for moving the parts positioned in the longitudinal bore by a finger.
Lower edges of the legs 1 and 2 are wider than the upper ones (Figure 5) and equipped with a graduated scale marked in appropriate units of length, such as centimeters. This scale is used for measuring, and the lower edges for drawing straight lines. Numbers of the scale begin at the lower end of the left leg 1 and continue at the upper end of the right leg 2, so that when the device is opened at an angle of 1809 they represent the distance from the starting point. In that way, the device can be used for measuring lengths greater than the length of one leg and drawing longer straight lines.
The rounded upper part of the leg 1 has a scale in degrees of arc, from 0 to 270". This scale, in cooperation with the inner edges of the leg 2, shows the angle between the legs.
Leg 1 has in its upper part, between the scale of length and the scale in degrees of arc, a small level device incorporated. This level device can be used in the known way when the device is folded, and, if the inclination of a flat surface is needed, folded device is positioned on the surface with its leg 2 on the surface, and leg 1 is turned until the level device shows that the leg 1 is horizontal. At that point, the protractor scale in degrees of arc shows the angle of the surface to the horizontal, i.e. its inclination.
In the upper part of the leg 2, a conventional pencil sharpener is incorporated, oriented so that its inlet is at the outer side of the leg 2. The way of using this sharpener can be seen in Figure 12. On the common axis, in the leg 1, a known sharpener for technical graphite pencils is incorporated, with its inlet at the inner part of the leg 1, as can be seen in Figure 13.
The leg 2 is provided with an electronic caiculator, intended for executing algebraic calculations.
