Abstract

Refractory linings made of large concrete wall and ceiling panels (5), e.g. in shaft preheating furnaces used in the cement industry, are installed using a device which comprises a gantry (1) carrying a traveling crane for lowering the panels into the furnace, the gantry being supported at one end on projections (3) spaced around the furnace and at the other end on a movable carriage (4). The assembly of the refractory lining takes place in sections with the gantry (1) being moved successively to the different projections (3), and the gantry (1) may be arranged to pivot on the projections (3). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A refractory chamber lining system The invention relates to a refractory chamber lining system for the installation and interchange of refractory linings in a refractory chamber, and has particular but not exclusive application to shaft preheating furnaces used in the cement industry.
For many years ceiling and wall linings for shaft preheating furnaces, have been made up of bricks of standard format and a number of smaller format shaped bricks. In this type of lining, a large number of bricks is required to line the walls and ceiling of a shaft preheating furnace. A drawback of this type of lining is that the temperature variations which occur have a detrimental effect on the bricks. The lining bricks are subject in the hot area to high thermal stresses and these stresses may lead to the formation of cracks with the result that large sections break off over comparatively short periods of time. This leads to considerable down times whilst the new bricks are installed. More recently new refractory concrete grades have been developed for use at high temperatures, enabling the use of large format concrete components. However these large components are heavy and up till now it has not been practical to transport and install them in a shaft preheating furnace as a refractory lining.
An object of the present invention is to provide a refractory chamber lining system which permits ready installation and/or interchange of such larger lining panels.
According to the invention there is provided a refractory chamber lining system comprising a refractory chamber provided with a refractory lining formed as a plurality of panel elements, and means for interchanging said elements, said interchanging means comprising a plurality of fixed support members on the chamber, a movable load support member movable to engage the fixed support members respectively, and on the movable support member means for lifting and lowering a said panel element when said movable member is engaged with a said fixed support member.
The invention thus permits installation of large format refractory concrete prefabricated components in shaft preheating furnaces without heavy manual labour and without costly lifting apparatus.
In accordance with an embodiment the invention, large format prefabricated refractory concrete components are lifted outside of the shaft preheating furnace using a device which essentially comprises a load support with a lifting element which is supported, on one hand, on one of the projections welded to the shaft preheating furnace and rests, on the other hand, on a gantry support. The load support is, in this respect, disposed pivotably on one of the projections and otherwise adjusted. The gantry support is adjusted with the load support in such a way that the gantry support, which may, for example, be movable, is pivoted with the load support. The application and installation takes place, in accordance with the invention, in such a way that part of the refractory lining is firstly installed and then the load support is disposed to rest on the next projection and adjusted such that the refractory lining is mounted and installed in a continuous manner.
This embodiment will now be described by way of illustrative example in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic illustration of a longitudinal section through a shaft preheating furnace with the prefabricated refractory concrete lining panel, components installed therein, and an assembly device for enabling the panels to be lifted and lowered, and Figure 2 is a section along the line A-A of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings a shaft preheating furnace 2 is provided with a refractory lining comprising a plurality of large format prefabricated refractory concrete components in the form of panels 5.
The panels 5 can be lifted and lowered for installation or interchange, by means of a lifting element in the form of a crane movable along a load support gantry 1. The gantry 1 is supported at one end on a movable carriage 4. The other end of the gantry 1 is arranged to rest on a selected one of a number of projections 3 welded onto the shaft preheating furnace 2.
The gantry 1 and the carriage 4 are disposed such that they may be pivoted on the projections 3.
The mounting and installation of the prefabricated refractory concrete components 5 takes place in that the section of the refractory lining lying under a selected first one of the projections 3 is firstly installed in the pivot area of the gantry 1, utilising the movable crane. Then the gantry 1 is moved on its carriage 4 to engage the next projection 3 so as to install the next panel, and so on until all the prefabricated refractory concrete components 5 have been mounted and installed.
The advantage of the invention is that no heavy manual labour or heavy lifting apparatus is required for the mounting and installation of large format prefabricated refractory concrete components.
