Abstract

An abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent composition contains (A) 10% to 30% by weight of a surfactant; (B) 3% to 30% by weight of a water-insoluble abrasive; (C) 0.1% to 10% by weight of a thickening agent which is a water-soluble polymer substance or a clay mineral; and (D) 0.001% to 0.05% by weight of a coloring material having at least one SO3 group in the molecule. This composition does not cause undesirable color transfer to an applicator such as a sponge.

Description

SPECIFICATION Abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent composition The present invention relates to an abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent composition. More specifically, it relates to an abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent composition which does not cause a color transfer or migration to a washing auxiliary means such as a washing sponge when the liquid detergent composition is directly applied to the washing auxiliary means.

Conventional detergent compositions heretofore used for washing vegetables and dishes mainly contain only surfactants. However, these conventional detergent compositions disadvantageously have relatively weak detergency (or detergent power) against, for example, solid oil and burned oil. Therefore, recently, several attempts have been made to incorporate abrasives into conventional detergent compositions containing surfactants.

On the other hand, a very small amount of a coloring material (or dye) is generally added to liquid detergent compositions, suitable for use as, for example, kitchen detergents, garment detergents, household detergents, or hair detergents, to provide a pleasing visual appearance that will increase the commercial image of the detergent products.

In abrasive-containing detergent compositions an amount of coloring materials 3 to 6 times that of detergent compositions not containing abrasives must be formulated to provide the same visual appearance, due to the color opacifying or hiding effect of the abrasives. Furthermore, abrasive-containing detergent compositions must be used by directly applying them to auxiliary washing means such as washing sponges, to obtain the full effect of their abrasion power. However this causes a color transfer or migration from the colored liquid detergent compositions to the auxiliary washing means when the colored liquid detergent compositions are directly applied to the auxiliary washing means.

Accordingly, the objects of the present invention are to eliminate the above-mentioned color transfer or migration problem of the prior art and to provide an abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent composition, which does not cause the color transfer or migration to an auxilary washing means such as a washing sponge.

Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description.

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided an abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent composition comprising: (A) 10% to 30% by weight of a surfactant; (B) 3% to 30% by weight of a water-insoluble abrasive; (C) 0.1% to 10% by weight of at least one thickening agent selected from the group consisting of water-soluble polymer substances and clay minerals; and (D) 0.001% to 0.05% by weight of a coloring material having at least one S03 group in the molecule thereof.

The surfactants usable as the component (A) in the present detergent compositions are anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, and ampholytic surfactants or zwitterionic surfactants which are conventionally used in detergent compositions.

The anionic surfactants include, for example, conventional sulfonate type, sulfate type, and phosphate type anionic surfactants. Typical examples of the sulfonate type anionic surfactants are linear or branched C8 to C23 alkyl benzene sulfonates, long-chain C8 to C22 alkyl sulfonates, and long-chain C8 to C22 olefin sulfonates. Typical examples of sulfate type anionic surfactants are salts of long-chain C8 to C22 monoalkyl sulfates, salts of polyoxyethylene (1 to 6 moles) long-chain C8 to C22 alkyl phenyl ether sulfates, and salts of polyoxyethylene (1 to 6 moles) C8to C18 alkyl phenyl ether sulfates.Typical examples of phosphate type anionic surfactants are long chain Cs to C22 monoalkyl, Cs to C22 dialkyl, and C8 to C22 sesquialkyl phosphate and polyoxyethylene (1 to 6 moles) C8 to C22 monoalkyl, C5to C22 dialkyl and C8 to C22 sesquialkyl phosphates.

The counter cationic ions of these anionic surfactants are, for example, alkali metal ions such as a sodium ion, and a potassium ion, alkaline earth metal ions such as a magnesium ion, and alkanolamine ions such as a monoethanolamine ion, a diethanolamine ion, and a triethanolamine ion.

Examples of the non ionic surfactants are oxyalkylene addition compounds such as polyoxyethylene (1 to 20 moles) linear primary or secondary C8 to C22 alkyl ethers, polyoxyethylene (1 to 20 moles) C8 to C18 alkyl phenyl ethers, and polyoxethylene/polyoxypropylene block copolymers; higher fatty acid alkanolamides or their alkyleneoxide addition products; and long-chain type tertiary C8 to C14 alkyl amine oxides.

Examples of the cationic surfactants are quaternary ammonium salts such as long-chain alkyl trimethyl ammonium salts, long-chain alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium salts, and long-chain alkyl pyridinium salts.

Examples of the ampholytic surfactants are dimethyl long-chain C8 to C18 alkyl-carboxymethyl ammonium betaines, di long-chain C8 to C18 alkylaminoalkylene carboxylates, and 2-alkyl-1 -carboxymethyl-1 - hydoxyethyl imidazolinium betaines. These surfactants can be used alone or in any mixture thereof.

The surfactant is formulated into the present detergent composition in an amount of 10% to 30% by weight, preferably 15% to 25% by weight, based on the total amount of the detergent composition. An amount of the surfactant of less than 10% by weight results in an insufficient foaming power and detergency.

Contrary to this, an amount of the surfactant of more than 30% by weight makes the objects to be washed slimy and results in poor rinsing properties of the washed objects.

The water-insoluble abrasives usable as the component (B) in the present detergent compositions include, for example, quartz, silica, calcite, feldspar, alumina, diatomaceous earth, perlite, alumino silicate, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, and various synthetic resins (e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, and polystyrene). These abrasives may be used alone or in any mixture thereof. The particle sizes of these abrasives may be varied over a wide range, but the average particle diameter is generally 1 to 150 Fm, more preferably 5 to 40 zm.

The water-insoluble abrasive is formulated into the present detergent composition in an amount of 3% to 30% by weight, preferably 5% to 15% by weight, based on the total amount of the detergent composition. A formulating amount of the abrasive of less than 3% by weight results in an insufficient abrasive power.

Contrary to this, an amount of abrasive of more than 30% by weight tends to cause unpreferable color transfer or migration to an auxiliary washing means such as a washing sponge, even when the coloring material is used according to the present invention, because the formulating amount of the coloring material should be increased due to an increase in the opacifying effect of the abrasive.

The thickning agents usable as the component (C) in the present detergent composition are those selected from water-soluble polymer substances and clay minerals.

Examples of the water-soluble polymer substances are carboxycelluloses, polyacrylic acid and the salts thereof, polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxyethylcelluloses, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and maleic an hydride polymer and the salts thereof, and any mixture thereof.

Examples of the clay minerals are montmorillonite, nontronite, hectorite, vermiculite, attapulgite, sepiolite, and any mixture thereof.

These thickening agents may be used along or in any mixture thereof. The thickening agent is formulated into the present detergent composition in an amount of 0.1% to 10% by weight, preferably 0.5% to 3% by weight, based on the total amount of the detergent composition. A formulating amount of the thickening agent of less than 0.1% by weight cannot provide a viscosity sufficient to stabilize the detergent composition.

Contrary to this, an amount of the thickening agent of more than 10% by weight results in the detergent composition having a too high viscosity, which is not preferable from the viewpoint of the applicability thereof.

The coloring materials usable as the component (D) in the present detergent composition are those having at least one S03 group in the molecule thereof. Examples of such coloring materials are acid dyes, listed herein in terms of the "Color Index Name"., which is a numbered list of synthetic dyestuffs and inorganic pigments complied by the Society of Dyers and colorists, such as Acid No. 27, Acid red 52, Acid red 106, Acid yellow 3, Acid yellow 23, Acid blue 9, Acid blue 62, and Acid blue 74, direct dyes also listed in terms of the "Color Index Name", such as Direct red 31, food colorants, listed in terms of "Color Index Name", such as Fiid green 2, Food green 3, and Food yellow 3, and organic pigments, listed in terms of "Color Index Name", such as Pigment red 49 and Pigment red 53.These coloring materials may be used alone or in any mixture thereof.

The coloring material is formulated into the present detergent composition in an amount of 0.001% to 0.05% by weight, preferably 0.005% to 0.02% by weight, based on the total amount of the detergent composition. A formulating amount of the coloring material of less than 0.001% by weight deteriorates the coloring properties. Contrary to this, a formulating amount of the coloring material of more than 0.05% by weight tends to cause unpreferable color transfer or migration into an auxiliary washing means such as a washing sponge.

The abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent composition of the present invention may contain other conventional additives such as low molecular weight (e.g., C2 - C4) aliphatic monohydric alcohols; germicides; perfumes; Ph adjusting agents; and hydrotropes, so long as the desired properties of the detergent composition of the present invention are not adversely affected.

The present detergent composition may be prepared in any conventional manner, for example, by stirring the ingredients at, for example, 500 rpm with a propeller type agitation blade in an appropriate mixing vessel.

According to the present invention, since the above specified coloring materials are formulated into the liquid detergent compositions containing the surfactants, the water-insoluble abrasives, and the thickening agents, color transfer or migration into the auxiliary washing means such as washing sponges does not occur.

Examples The present invention now will be further illustrated by, but is by no means limited to, the following Examples.

In the following Examples, the degree of colorization of the detergent composition and the degree of color transfer to a washing sponge were evaluated as follows: (1) Degree of Colorization The liquid detergent composition was charged into a 100 ml volume glass bottle and the visual appearance was observed. The results were evaluated according to the following criteria: Condition Score Color too thin 1 Rather thin color 2 Good color 3 Color too deep 4 *Good result (2) Degree of Color transfer to sponge White polyurethane sponge was cut into pieces having a size of 2 cm x 5 cm x 0.5 cm. These pieces were charged into a 100 ml volume beaker containing the liquid detergent composition.The contents of the beaker were agitated for 3 minutes, and the pieces were then removed from the beaker and washed with tap water until the slimy feel derived from the detergent composition had disappeared. The degree of colorization of the pieces was visually evaluated, i.e., compared with pieces of the original white sponge, in accordance with the following criteria.

Examples 1 to 15 Various abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent compositions having the compositions listed in Table 1 were prepared by stirring the ingredients at 500 rpm with a propeller type agitation belade.

The degree of colorization and color transfer thereof into a washing sponge of the compositions were evaluated in the manner stated above.

The results are shown in Table 1.

Comparative Examples 1 to 8 Various abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent compositions having the compositions listed in Table 2 were prepared in the same manner as in the above-mentioned Examples.

The degree of colorization and color transfer thereof into a washing sponge of the compositions were evaluated in the manner stated above.

The results are shown in Table 2.

Claims (6)

1. An abrasive-containing colored liquid detergent composition comprising: (A) 10% to 30% by weight of a surfactant; (B) 3% to 30% by weight of a water-insoluble abrasive; (C) 0.1% to 10% by weight of at least one thickening agent selected from the group consisting of water-soluble polymer substances and clay minerals; and (D) 0.001% to 0.05% by weight of a coloring material having at least one SO3 group in the molecule thereof.
2. A detergent composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said coloring material is an acid dye, a direct dye, a food colorant, or an organic pigment, having at least one S03 group therein.
3. A detergent composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said surfactant is at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, and anpholytic surfactants.
4. A detergent composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said water-insoluble abrasive is at least one abrasive selected from the group consisting of quartz, silica, calcite, feldspar, alumina, diatomaceous earth, perlite, alumino silicate, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, and synthetic resin.
5. A detergent composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said thickening agent is at least one member selected from the group consisting of water-soluble polymer substances and clay minerals.
6. A detergent composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said coloring material is Acid red 27, Acid red 52, Acid red 106, Acid yellow 3, Acid yellow 23, Acid blue 9, Acid blue 62, Acid blue 74, Direct red 31, Food green 2, Food green 3, Food yellow 3, Pigment red 49, or pigment red 53.
