A lift device (20) within the housing comprises a scissors or lazy-tongs type of mechanism driven by an electric motor (36). A warming device (22) comprising an electric heating element (45) is supported by the lift device for passage through the aperture (18) from a lowered position within the housing to a raised position projecting upwardly from the main table surface (13), an uppermost part (23) of the warming device providing a flush fitting closure for the aperture when the warming device is in its said lowered position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to tables This invention relates to tables, in particular to food tables used for example for seated eating and/or for serving food. Examples of such food tables are dining tables, breakfast tables and bar counters.

It has long been considered desirable to ensure that food to be consumed is kept warm and/or that such food is served on pre-warmed plates.

Accordingly warming devices for utensils such as plates, pots and dishes, and/or for food they contain, have been marketed in the form of trays, trolleys and like individual items requiring storage space.

This invention aims to reduce or obviate the need for additional storage space for such warming devices.

According to this invention there is provided a food table characterised in that its main table surface is apertured, a housing beneath said table surface contains a lift device, a warming device is supported by said lift device for passage through said aperture from a lowered position within the housing to a raised position projecting upwardly from said surface, and in that an uppermost part of said warming device provides a flush-fitting closure for said aperture when the warming device is in its said lowered position.

Advantageously said lift device is motor driven, e.g. by an electric motor connectable to the domestic mains supply. An electric switch for the motor may be located in the edge of said main table surface.

Preferably said lift device comprises a "lazytongs" type of mechanism.

Preferably said warming device comprises an electrical heating element. An electric switch for the heating element may be located in the edge of said main table surface.

By way of non-limiting example, one embodiment of this invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings of which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a food table according to this invention with its warming device raised, Figure 2 shows the food table of Fig 1 in a vertical longitudinal cross-section, Figure 3 shows the food table of Fig 1 in a vertical transverse cross-section, and Figure 4 is cross-sectional view taken along the line IV--IV of Fig 3.

The illustrated dining table 10 comprises a large wooden box 11 supported on legs 12 and upon which the planar table top 1 3 is mounted.

The box 11 has four inclined side panels and provides a rectangular top opening 14 that is wider and longer than the closed rectangular base 1 6 of the box, the opening 14 being located generally centrally of the table top 13. An opentopped steel container 1 5 of right-parallelepiped form is located within box 1 The table top 13 is provided with a central aperture 1 8 of rectangular outline above the open top 1 7 of container 1 5. A lift mechanism 20 located within container 1 5 supports a warming device 22 and serves to raise and lower the warming device such that it can pass between the raised position of Fig 1, in which it extends above the level of table top 13, and a lowered position in which it lies wholly within container 15 with an uppermost part 23 of the warming device level with table top 1 3 and forming a closure for the aperture 1 8 that is flushfitting and provides a contiguous upper surface for part 23 and table top 13.

The lift mechanism 20 comprises, at each longitudinal side, a pair of rods 24, 26 that are pivoted centrally to one another. The two pairs of rods are also centrally interconnected by a transverse rod 25. The upper ends of rods 24, 26 are interconnected by transverse rods 27, 28 which are extended to provide stub axles for upper wheels 30. The wheels 30 engage in [-section rails 29 depending from the bottom of the warming device 22. The lower ends of rods 24 are interconnected by a transverse rod 31 likewise extended to provide an axle for a pair of lower wheels 32, the rod 31 having a central boss 33 that is provided with an internally screw-threaded longitudinal bore 34. An externally screwthreaded shaft 35 extends co-operably through the internally screw-threaded bore 34 and has its free end 36 fast with the base of container 1 5.A transverse rod 37 interconnects the lower ends of rods 26 which are pivoted to fixed blocks 38. It will be appreciated that rotation of shaft 35 in one direction causes wheels 32 to approach blocks 38, and rods 24, 26 to open out in the manner of scissors or lazy tongs thereby to move the wheels 30 upwardly and raise the warming device 22, and that rotation of shaft 35 in the opposite direction moves wheels 32 away from blocks 38 and causes rods 24, 26 to close (in the manner of scissors or lazy-tongs) to bring wheels 30 downwards and into engagement of resilient stops or bumper blocks 39 located adjacent wheels 32 and blocks 38, i.e. the position shown in broken lines in Fig 2.Such rotation of shaft 35 is effected by a fractional horsepower electric motor 36 housed in a compartment 37 that is formed by a partition wall 39 in container 1 5, the drive from motor 36 being transmitted to the shaft 35 via a crown-and-pinion or a warm-and-wormwheel transmission 38. The electricity supply to the electric motor 35 is derived from the domestic mains via a plug and cable (not shown) connected to a connector box 41 (e.g. a conventional socket) and indicator light 42 located near the bottom of box 11 , internal wiring (not shown) and an electrical two-way switch 43 located on an edge of the table top 13 at one end thereof.

A further electrical on/off switch 44 located adjacent switch 43 on an edge of table top 1 3 connects the electrical supply from connector box via flexible wiring (not shown) to an electrically insulated heating element 45 located in a base pan 46 of the warming device 22. The latter is provided with one or more wire racks 47 for supporting plates and the like that are to be warmed either empty or when containing food to be consumed.

It will be appreciated that the aperture 1 8 in table top 13 can be rectangular, circular, oval or any other shape which will conform to or circumscribe the plan outline of warming device 22 (which is rectangular in the illustrated embodiment) as long as the same shape is provided for the part 23 that covers the warming device 22 and is both to fit snugly within the aperture 1 8 and to lie contiguous with table top 13 when the warming device 22 is in its lowermost position within the container 1 5. To avoid overheating in this lowered position, the container 1 5 and box 11 are provided with air holes or vents 48. Such vents 48 in the base 1 6 of box 11 allow the warming device 22 to be used for warming the feet of persons seated at the table 10.

It will also be appreciated that one or more of the following modifications may be made. The box 11 may be omitted; the legs 12 may be omitted so that the table 10 is supported by box 11 or, if not present, by container 15; the table top may be mounted pivotally on one edge of box 11 or, if not present, of container 15; and (except where the last modification applies) the table top 1 3 can be supported directly by legs with the box 11 and/or container 1 5 suspended from the underside of table top 13.
