Abstract
The bar-like bolt 12 is shaped to define a recess 28 in which acts the follower 24 of a cylinder lock 4, the bolt being guided by slots in the flanged edges of a guide 8. On turning the follower 24 of the cam lock the bolt is thrown between a locked position X' and an unlocked position X. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Locks
The invention relates to locks for mounting, for example on doors and cabinets of sheet metal.
According to the invention there is provided a locking device comprising a bolt, a guide and cam lock, the bolt being integrally formed and having a tongue and a recess, the recess being defined by two opposed walls substantially perpendicular to the plane of the bar portion and a bridge portion linking the two walls, the guide being a plate formed with a flange at the two opposite edges, each flange having a slot, the slots being aligned to enable the guide to slidably receive the bolt tongue, and the cam lock having a tongue which can be inserted into the recess and then be rotated to move the bolt to and fro. In use, the lock and the guide are fixed to a door. The guide is fixed to the inner face of the door, preferably by rivets. An apertured plate may be fixed to the outer face of the door, using the same rivets that fix the guide to the inner face.A numbered adhesive disc identifying the particular lock and key may be stuck to the locker door inside the aperture of the plate, from which position it is not readily removed.
The separation of the opposed walls of the recess of the bolt is preferably only slightly greater than the distance between the cam lock body, which acts as a stop, and the leading edge of the tongue in the extreme positions of the bolt.
Preferably the major axis of the lock tongue is inclined at 450 to the walls in these extreme positions. Rotation of the lock tongue by 900 when the bolt is in one of the extreme positions will then displace it into the other extreme position.
An embodiment will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of the locking device prior to assembly, and
Figure 2 is a plan view of the assembled locking device in the unlocked position.
The locking device 2 comprises a commercially available cam lock 4, a bolt 6 and a bolt guide 8.
The locking device is mounted on a sheet metal door 10, and in its locked condition, a flat bolt tongue 12 engages behind a door jamb 14.
The lock 4 has an externally screw threaded body 16 with a retaining flange 18. The lock 4 is mounted on the door 10 through a hole 20 in the door, the retaining flange 1 8 then abutting the outer face of the door and a nut 22 abutting the inner face of the door. A lock tongue 24 may be turned by inserting and turning a key (not shown) in a keyhole 26 in the outer face of the flange 18.
The bolt 6, one end of which forms the bolt tongue 12, has a recess 28 at its outer end, and is formed from a length of flat bar. The recess 28, is formed by bending the bar by 900 in three places, a first bend 30 in the central region of the bar, being of opposite sense to second and third bends 32, 34, nearer the end of the bar.
The guide 8 is formed from one plate by bending the plate at two opposite edges to form two flanges 36, 38 and a fixing plate portion 40 disposed therebetween. Each flange 36, 38 is formed with a slot 42 enabling the bolt tongue to slide in the guide 8.
A plate 44, having a circular aperture 46 is mounted on the outer face of the door. The plate 44 serves to surround and protect the edges of an adhesive disc, not shown, carrying a number identifying the particular lock and key.
An identical, rectangular array of rivet holes 48 is provided in the fixing plate 40 of the guide 8, in the door 10 and in the apertured plate 46. The same four pop rivets 50 are thus used to fix the guide 8 to the inner face of the door 10 and the apertured plate 44 to the outer face of the door.
The rivets 50 may be drilled out to remove the assembly from the door should the keys to be lost and the lock needs to be changed.
The device is assembled by first riveting the guide 8 and the apertured plate 44 to the door, then sliding the bolt tongue 12 through the aligned slots 42 in the guide 8, then fixing the lock 4 to the door as previously described with the lock tongue 24 disposed in the bolt recess 28. The screw 46 (or hut) disposed at the end of the cam lock 4 which is inside the door is now effectively covered by the bridge portion 48 of the bolt recess 28, so that it cannot be removed from the assembly by unauthorized persons when the door is open.
The assembled device is shown in Figure 2 with the door unlocked, the end of the bolt tongue 12 being in the position X, out of register with the jamb 14. When the lock tongue 24 is tuned through 1 800, the bolt 6 is slid to the left in Figure 2, and its end is removed behind the jamb 14, to the position X'. Further or opposite turning of the lock tongue 24 unlocks the door.
In modified embodiments, the bolt may, for example, be injection moulded from nylon (which may have a suitable reinforcing filter) or be die cast in aluminium or 'MAZAL'.
1. A locking device comprising a bolt, a guide and cam lock, the bolt being integrally formed and having a tongue and a recess, the recess being defined by two opposed wails substantially perpendicular to the plane of the bar portion and a bridge portion linking the two walls, the guide being a plate formed with a flange at two opposite edges, each flange having a slot, the slots being aligned to enable the guide to slidably receive the bolt tongue, and the cam lock having a tongue which can be inserted into the recess and then be rotated to move the bolt to and fro.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the bolt is formed by bending a length of flat bar.
3. A device according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the body of the cam lock acts as a stop against which the walls of the recess abut, in the extreme positions of the bolt.
4. A device according to any preceding claim
