Description

SPECIFICATION Display stand Field of Invention This invention relates to a display stand which can be repeatedly erected and collapsed to make it suitable for exhibition and like use.

Background of the Invention There is a need for a display stand which can be readily erected and collapsed, which is easily carried and which can be customised to carry advertising material appropriate to the user.

Summary of the Invention According to the invention this need is met by a repeatedly erectable and collapsible display stand comprising top and bottom panels with peripheral lips defining edge grooves, and hinged wall panels which fit within the grooves to locate and retain the wall panels and afford rigidity to the erected stand.

The panels may be formed so that the top panel can serve as the bottom panel, and vice versa, enabling the display stand to be erected in either of two relatively inverted positions, giving a degree of versatility which would not otherwise be obtainable.

An intermediate tray may be provided, being capable of being supported by the hinged wall panel with the upper tray surface uppermost, regardless of which of the two relatively inverted positions is chosen for the display stand.

The hinged wall panels may extend around less than the complete periphery of the stand, leaving an opening for access to the inner space of the stand.

The hinged wall panel may be formed in one piece, e.g. from a synthetic plastics material such as polypropylene, the hinges between adjacent walls being defined by partly severed or reduced thickness lines of the material, enabling the wall panels to be bent to the desired erected orientation and also folded flat for storage and transp, ort.

The top and bottom panels may be formed with aligned holes to receive a pole (which may be arranged to carry an umbrella, or a detachable fascia) The hole may be in any desired position but if it is offset towards one side of the stand, the tray may be formed with two holes to enable the pole to extend through aligned holes in the top and bottom panels and in the tray, in either of the two relatively inverted positions of the display stand. With an asymmetric or offset hole, the invertability of the stand enables the pole to be placed on one or other side of the stand, relative to the front access opening. The lower end of the pole may be pointed to allow it to be driven into soft ground to anchor the erected display stand to the ground.Peel-on/peel-off screen printed transfers may be provided for application to the wall panels, the transfers carrying advertising or promotional material appropriate to the user of the display stand.

A display stand according to the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the erected display stand; Figure 2 is a perspective view showing top and bottom panels, hinged wall panels and an intermediate tray of the stand; Figure 3 is a plan view of a carrying case, shown opened, for transporting the collapsed display stand; Figure 4 consists of a detailed sectional view illustrating how the top and bottom panels and the intermediate tray locate in grooves in the hinged wall panels; Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view showing how the top and bottom panels of the stand can be made to engage with the wall panels; and Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view showing a detail of Figure 5.

Detailed Description of the Drawings The top panel 1 and the bottom panel 2 are each of the same five-sided shape and each has a peripheral lip 3 (Figure 4) defining a groove 5 which receives the edge of the hinged wall panels 6. The panels 1 and 2 are formed from sheet plastics material by vacuum forming. The wall panels 6 consist of six individual panels 6a to 6f (Figure 2) formed in one piece from polypropylene, the six wall panels being hinged one to the next along thin film hinge lines of reduced material thickness. Each of the wall panels 6b and 6e is formed with a horizontally elongated slot 7 to support projecting lips 8 of an intermediate tray 9 which is of the same five-sided shape as the panels 1 and 2 and which spans the internal space of the stand, as illustrated in Figure 1.Figure 1 also illustrates that the hinged wall panels 6 do not extend around the complete periphery of the stand, but leave an access opening to the inner space and to the intermediate tray or shelf 9.

The top and bottom panels 1 and 2 are tray-like and have vertically aligned holes 10 and 11 respectively, to receive an umbrella pole 13 carrying an umbrella canopy 14. In Figure 1 the umbrella pole 13 is shown offset towards the righthand side of the display stand when the latter is viewed from the open side of the stand. If it is required to have the umbrella on the other side of the stand, the tray 9 is removed, the display stand is inverted and the umbrella and tray 9 replaced in position. To enable this to be done, the intermediate tray 9 has two symmetrically arranged holes 1 5 and 1 6. The hole in the top panel 1 also serves as a drainage hole. The lower end of the pole 13 is pointed for insertion into the ground, to provide anchorage. Figure 3 shows a bag or case for carrying the display stand in its collapsed condition. The case has two relatively hinged halves 1 5 and 1 6 which are fastened by straps 1 7 and provided with handle halves 18 and 19. The case may be made of a flexible plastics material and is shaped and dimensioned to accommodate the top and bottom panels 1 and 2 and the intermediate tray 5, together with the folded wall panel 6. The umbrella pole 13 is telescopic and this, together with the canopy 14, can also be packed within the carrying case which is provided with concertina or pleated pockets.

In the upper part of Figure 4 is shown the way in which the wall panel 6 locates within the peripheral edge recess or groove 5 of the top panel 1 to rigidify the stand. The engagement of the wall panel 6 in the bettom panel 2 is similar, it being understood that the top and bottom panels are identical except for the positioning of the holes 10 and 11 which makes them handed or mirror images of one another. The lower part of Figure 4 shows how the edge lip 8 of the intermediate tray 9 is located in the horizontally elongated slot 7 of the wall panel 6b (or 6e).

The display stand can be erected or collapsed very readily and, in its collapsed state, is very compact for transport or storage within the bag or case of Figure 3. The stand can be used to sell or display goods and the wall panels are very suitable for carrying screen printed transfers for advertising or promotional material. These transfers can be removed or replaced as necessary.

For added rigidity, and to enable the stand to be picked up and moved as a unit, the top and bottom panels preferably engage with the wall panels, as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6.

The top and bottom of each of the panels 6b and 6e are formed with an elongated aperture 20 and a shallow lead-in recess 22. The top and bottom panels 1 and 2, where they receive the wall panels 6b and 6e, have their lips 3 shaped with formations 23 which interengage with the apertures 20, as illustrated in Figure 6. Each formation 23 includes an inwardly extended projection 24 which defines a finger recess or finger hold on the external side of the panel. The shaping of the lip 3 is also modified at 26, in comparison with the remainder of the lip 3.

On assembly of the display stand, the formations 23 engage with a snap action in the apertures 20, the finger recess then enabling the stand to be lifted and moved as a unit. It will be appreciated that both the top and bottom panels 1 and 2 are engageable with the panels 6b and 6e in this manner. The resilience of the material of the top and bottom panels 1 and 2 enables the projections 24 to be snapped out of the apertures 20.
