Abstract
A steel beer-keg (10) has at least one axially-projecting chime (18), the free edge of the or each chime being folded to form a bead (24) comprising an annular element of fully closed tubular cross-sectional form. The element comprises either more than one complete convolution, or a single convolution closed by a fillet (26) of weld metal. The chime or chimes (18) may be welded to a side wall portion (14), or the keg may comprise two body portions which are welded together, each portion having an integral chime. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in containers
This invention relates to containers for liquids formed of sheet metal, such as metal beer kegs, of the type having a container proper with an annular wall or "chime" extending axially beyond each end
of the container proper.
-In such an arrangement the free edge of the chime is sometimes folded to provide a partially tubular section annular rim thereto. However such a partially tubular rim, usually known as a bead, itself has a free edge and the bead is liable to deformation under the impacts that containers are subject to when being handled.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a container for liquids having an annular metal chime extending axially from at least one end of the container proper and a bead at the free edge of the chime characterised in that the bead comprises an annular element of fully closed tubular cross-sectional form.
Such a fully closed tubular cross-section may be accomplished either by folding the free edge of the chime through one convolution and subsequently depositing a continuous circumferential closing fillet of weld metal or by folding the free edge of the chime through more than one complete convolution such that there is a circumferentially extending overlap of metal around the bead.
Other features of the invention will become apparent from the following description given herein solely by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several drawings and wherein
Figure 1 is a cross-section through a metal beer keg having a partially tubular section bead formed on the chime in accordance with conventional practice,
Figure 2 is a similar cross-section through a metal beer keg showing a fully closed tubular section bead formed in accordance with one aspect of the present invention wherein the bead is provided by more than one complete convolution of metal at the free edge of the chime,
Figure 3 is a similar cross-section through a beer keg showing a fully closed tubular section bead formed in accordance with a further aspect of the invention wherein the bead is provided by one convolution of metal at the free edge of the chime closed by a weld fillet, and
Figure 4 is a similar cross-section through an alternative construction of beer keg showing a bead of the type illustrated in Figure 2.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings there is shown a container for liquids in the form of a metal beer keg 10 constructed in accordance with conventional practice. The keg 10 may be formed of mild steel or of stainless steel and is provided with two domed opposed axial ends 12 secured to a side wall portion 14 of the container proper as
by welding 16. The side wall portin 14 may be
provided with an integral central annular rolling
band 1 5. At each end of the keg the side walls 14
extend axially to provide an integral annular chime
1 8 itself provided at its free edge with an integral
bead 20. The bead 20 is formed by folding the
metal of the chime 18 at its free edge into a partially tubular cross-sectional form as illustrated
so that the bead itself is also provided with a free
edge 20a.A neck 1 3 is secured in an opening in
one end of the keg for receiving a closure unit in
known manner.
It will be appreciated that containers such as
beer kegs are subject to abuse during handling operations and in particular are frequently dropped
onto the ground such that the impact is taken by the bead. Indeed the bead and chime are provided to protect the container proper from damage but,
in the construction illustrated in Figure 1, the bead
itself is liable to deformation upon impact and, in time, repeated impacts can lead to deformation of the chime and possible collapse of the bead and chime onto the end of the container proper.
In accordance with the invention the beer kegs illustrated in Figures 2, 3 and 4 are formed with beads comprising an annular element of fully closed tubular cross-sectional form.
The beer keg 10 illustrated in Figure 2 is formed of mild steel or stainless steel and, in the manner of the known keg of Figure 1, comprises two domed opposed axial ends 12 secured to a side wall portion 14 of the container proper by welding 16; a neck 13 being provided in one end
12 and a central annular rolling band 1 5 being provided on the side wall portion 1 4. At each end of the keg the side walls 14 extend axially to provide an integral annular chime 18 having an integral bead 22 at the free edge of the chime. In accordance with the invention the bead 22 is formed by folding the free edge of the chime 1 8 through more than one complete convolution such that there is a circumferentially extending overlap of metal around the bead. The bead 22 is thus formed into a fully closed tubular ring at the free edge of each chime 1 8.
The beer keg 10 illustrated in Figure 3 is again formed of mild steel or stainless steel in a similar manner to that described with reference to Figure 2 having ends 12 secured to a side wall portion 14 by welding 16, a neck 13 and a rolling band 15. In this construction a bead 24 is formed integrally at the free edge of each chime 18 by folding the free edge substantially through one convolution and depositing a continuous closing fillet 26 of weld metal between the free edge of the bead 24 and the chime 18. Thus the bead 24 is again formed into a fully closed tubular ring at the free edge of each chime 18.
The keg illustrated in Figure 4 is of a different overall construction to that shown in Figures 1 to 3 and comprises two deep drawn body portions 28 of mild steel or stainless steel secured together at their edges by welding 30; a neck 1 3 being secured in the end of one portion 28. An annular rolling band 28a may be formed in each body portion 28. An annular chime 32 of mild steel or stainless steel is secured by welding 33 adjacent the closed end of each body portion 28 and, in accordance with the invention, the free edge of each chime 32 is formed into a bead 34 by folding said free edge through more than one complete convolution such that there is a circumferentially extending overlap of metal around the bead.
It will be appreciated that the bead 34 of Figure 4 may also be produced by the welding method described with reference to Figure 3 and, in either construction, the bead 34 is formed into a fully closed tubular ring at the free edge of each chime 32.
Thus in the constructions illustrated in Figures 2, 3 and 4 the bead is of fully closed tubular crosssectional form and it is found that such a construction provides a substantial improvement in the strength of the container as a whole. In particular the fully closed tubular cross-sectional form of the bead resists deformation of the bead itself upon impact providing improved strength against both radial deformation as well as against axial collapse of the chime. If such a bead is damaged through continued abuse, it can be bent back to its original shape due to its tubular
construction far more easily than could the beads
of the prior art containers, primarily due to the fact
that the chime itself will not have been
substantially deformed close to the bead.
