Abstract

In order to turn a load unit (45), e.g. a pallet, around, it is removed from its storage place by means of a lifting arrangement (23), e.g. forks, on e.g. a truck, and moved to a turning position (39) on the truck where it is rotated around a substantially vertical axis (40), into the desired orientation, after which it can be moved back into its storage place. A reach truck (1) is provided with a movable mast (4) and a turntable (39) the forks (24), (25) being movable into channels (21), (22) in the body of the truck, and the rotation of the pallet being facilitated by e.g. rollers (47). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A process for turning a load unit round a substantially vertical axis, and an arrangement for accomplishing this process The present invention relates to a process for turning a load unit round a substantially vertical axis, and an arrangement for accomplishing this process.
In the present invention "load unit" is regarded as being the complete load or the load-bearing plafform, but hereinafter only load pallets will be referred to in the application, since these are the prime concern thereof.
Many warehouses for storing load units in the form of load pallets with goods resting on them function ordinarily so that the two lowest levels in the pallet rack are used as assembly points by the collecting operatives, while the remaining levels in the pallet rack function as storage places for the load goods. The pallets are usually placed with their short side out towards the gangway, in order to save space. With regard to operating equipment, low-lift pick-up trucks are used for taking out orders, while reach trucks are used for inserting pallets, taking out empty pallets and for lifting down storage pallets to the collecting points. When the collecting operatives have picked up and removed half the items on a pallet, a very inconvenient operating position arises when the rest of the goods, which are located a long way from the gangway, are to be picked up.
The goods, which may be relatively heavy, involve a considerable risk of back injury, etc. to the collecting operatives, and long spells of sick leave and high personnel turnover may therefore occur with the method of picking up described above.
Earlier solutions for eliminating the said problem have involved placing the pallets with their long side turned out towards the gangway; however, this is a very uneconomical solution since, compared with pallets placed short-side outwards, considerably more floor space is required to provide the same amount of pallet places in the store.
Another solution has been to remove the half empty pallets with a reach truck, for example, then to put the pallets down on the floor, drive round to the other side of the pallet, turn the truck, pick up the pallet and put it back again. This procedure is time-consuming and while it is being carried out the gangway is blocked so that no other trucks can pass by. This has meant that even if conditions are suitable where the paller is to be turned round, this is not done due to the inconvenient procedure involved, and injury to the operatives is occasioned during the picking-up process.
The main aim of the present invention is therefore to provide a process of the kind indicated above which allows the load unit to be turned round simply, quickly and effectively.
A further aim is to provide an arrangement for carrying out such a process.
The said aim is achieved with a process according to the present invention which is primarily characterised in that the load unit is removed from the storage place by means of a lifting arrangement and moved to a turning point located on the said lifting arrangement, is placed on a device which can be rotated round a substantially vertical axis, and is rotated into the desired position, after which the load unit is moved back expediently to its storage location.
An arrangement which is designed to carry out the said process is characterised in that a load unit turning arrangement which can be rotated around a substantially vertical axis is provided on a load-lifting arrangement which preferably comprises a truck, and particularly a so-called reach truck.
In the following an embodiment example of the subject of the invention is described with reference to the accompanying drawings on which a truck with a load unit turning arrangement according to the invention is shown in perspective, viewed at an angle from in front and above, whereon::- Figure 1 shows a lifting arrangement in a raised position for removing a load pailet, Figure 2 shows the lifting arrangement in a lowered, load pallet turning position with a load pallet placed on the turning device, Figure 3 shows schematically the frictionreducing elements for assisting turning, disposed on the turning arrangement, Figure 4 shows schematically the drive elements for a load lifting and removing arrangement, Figure 5 shows schematically the drive elements for effecting the turning of a load unit by means of the arrangement, and Figure 6 shows schematically the construction of the truck frame, in a sectioned state.
On the drawings a reach truck of a type which is already known per se is designated with the numeral 1 as a whole, while on operating compartment located at one end of the truck, the function and construction of which will not be described in detail, is designated with the numeral 2. At the other end of the truck, where the truck 1 can be pivoted around two wheels 3 located at a mutual distance from each other, a column 4 in the form of a mast is supported on the truck 1.
The frame 4 is supported via its lower part on a carriage 5 which is movably guided via wheel elements 6 or other rolling or sliding elements, along two guideways 7 disposed on the truck and extending in the normal travel direction of the truck. The said guideways 7 are each supported on their respective supporting arms 8 and 9 which project forwards from the rear part of the truck chassis. The said carriage 5 is driven by belt or chain drive, or by means of any suitable drive arrangement. The belts or chains 10 and 11 respectively run over pulley wheels 12 and 13 respectively at the ends of the path, where the carriage 5 occupies its respective terminal positions. The belts or chains 10, 11 are expediently driven by a common electric or hydraulic motor 14 which transmits the drive movement from the pulley 1 6 of the motor via a belt or chain 1 5 to a wheel 1 7 which is attached to a drive shaft 18 connected to the two rear pulley wheels 13. The two front pulley wheels 12 are expediently supported similarly on a common axle 19 which is mounted on a beam 20 which, like the two chassis arms 8, 9, projects forwards from the rear chassis and the operating compartment 2 of the truck. Channels 21 and 22 respectively are formed between the two chassis arms 8, 9 and the beam 20 and are designed to accommodate their respective load-bearing fork arms 24 and 25 respectively, appertaining to a load-bearing fork arrangement 23.At its rear end the load-bearing fork arrangement 23 has two uprights 26 and 27 respectively which are connected to each other by means of transverse beams 28 and 29 respectively and which serve to stiffen the arrangement and act as a stop for the load unit which is being carried on the loadbearing fork arms 24, 25. The load-bearing fork arrangement 23 is guided movably along the upright 4 in the vertical direction thereof by means of a hydraulically acting cylinder arrangement 30 which extends and acts along the upright column 4.Two chains 31 and 32 respectively, which are looped round their respective pulley wheels 33 and 34 attached to the cylinder arrangement 30, and which are connected via their respective ends to their respective part 23A of the load-bearing fork arrangement 23 or the upright column 4, serve as a movement transmitting arrangement and gearing arrangement for the cylinder 30 for lifting and lowering the load-bearing fork arrangement 23 in a manner which is known per se.
Moreover, the upright column 4 can be pivoted around a horizontal pivot axis 35 which is formed by two members located in the respective upper free ends of substantially U-shaped bar element 36 which is supported on the carriage 5 and has its two free shanks 37 and 38 respectively bent upwards.
A turning arrangement 39 in the form of a plate, for example, is mounted on the freely suspended beam 20 in the central region, so that it can rotate around a substantially vertical axle 40. The plate 39 which is rigidly connected to the axle 40 is driven via a chain transmission 41 , for example, by an electric or hydraulic motor 42, for example, which is located under the plate 39 on the beam 20. It is also possible to replace the motorised drive arrangement with a manual one, although this it not shown on the drawings.
Supporting elements extend upwards from the turning plate 39 in the form of the upright elements 43 and 44 respectively, for example, the function of which will be explained later.
The function of the turning arrangement 39 on a truck 1 as described above and shown in the drawing, when handling a load unit in the form of a pallet 45 in a warehouse, for example, is as follows: The driver drives the truck 1 forwards centrally to the pallet 45 which, for example, bears goods 46 and which it is desired to turn round so that the goods will be more readily accessible, and moves the column 4, which is displaced along the two channels 21, 22, out until the two fork arms 24, 25 are placed under the pallet 45. If the lowest pallet 45 is raised up and there is room under it for the truck 1 to travel forwards up to the pallet 45, the said column displacement movement is not carried out.The pallet 45 is lifted up by the fork arms 24, 25, which can be lowered right down to the plane on which the truck 1 is standing, and is then displaced with the aid of the column 4 and the carriage 5 along the guideway 7 towards the rear part of the truck, i.e. towards its operating compartment 2, in order to lower it onto the turning arrangement 39 on the beam 20. The pallet 45 comes to rest there on rollers 47, balls, or other sliding elements, located on the upper face of the beam 20 and/or the arms 8, 9, the function of these elements being to reduce the friction between the pallet 45 and the loadbearing surface on the truck 1 while the pallet 45 is being turned round.
The pallet 45 rests with its centre part on top of the turning plate 39 when the fork arms 24, 25 are lowered down towards the floor and the column 4 is then pulled backwards right out from the pallet 45.
The plate 39 is then rotated to the desired angle, and preferably through 1800 so that the goods 46 are turned towards the column 4. The supporting elements 43, 44 on the plate 39 expediently co-act thereby with the sides of the support part 45A located in the centre of the pallet 45 on its underside, while the pallet 45 is rolling on the rollers 47 and turning round. After the turning movement of the pallet 45 has been completed the column 4 is moved forwards again towards the pallet 45, which is lifted up to the required level and moved forwards by means of the column 4 and the carriage 5 so that the pallet 45 can be place back in its original storage place, but with the goods 46 turned outwards towards the gangway in the warehouse. After this the lifting arrangement 23 is lowered and the column 4 is drawn back, whereupon a new load pallet can be handled in the way described above, by means of the arrangement.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment which is described above and shown on the drawings merely by way of example, but can be modified with regard to its details within the scope of the following Patent Claims. The arrangement is naturally not bound to a truck of the kind described above, but may of course also be used with other types of trucks and lifting structures than that shown and described.
