Abstract

The moulding strip 16 has one limb 17 which is fastened to the drip rail and another free limb 19 which projects beyond the body edge adjacent thereto, when the door is opened, and is pressed back towards the drip rail by an edge portion 5 of the door 7, when the door is closed. The drip-moulding strip 16 is designed in such a way that, when the door is closed, its free limb 19 closes the gap X between the upper edge portion 5 of the door 7 and the body and lies flush with the adjacent body contour of the vehicle. The arrangement reduces wind noise. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Motor vehicle with a flexible drip rail moulding The invention relates to a motor vehicle having a drip rail having an attached flexible dripmoulding strip and located in the gap between the door aperture and the door, the drip-moulding strip having a first limb secured to the drip rail and a free limb which projects beyond the adjacent body edges, when the door is opened, and is bent back towards the drip moulding by an edge portion of the door, when the door is closed.
A motor vehicle with a concealed drip rail and a resilient drip-moulding strip attached thereto is already known from German Gebrauchsmuster 68,08,025, in which the drip-moulding strip located in the gap between the door aperture and the door has an essentially V-shaped crosssection, one limb of which is secured within the drip rail and the other free limb of which projects beyond the adjacent body edge when the door is opened, and is pressed back towards the drip moulding by an edge portion of the door when the door is closed. The concealed drip moulding in question is formed both in the region of the Acolumn and of the C-column.
Although many cross-sections for such a dripmoulding strip are shown in the above mentioned Gebrauchsmuster 68,08,025, all these designs have the disadvantage that the drip-moulding strip is made so that there remains between it and the adjacent body contour a gap and this can lead to undesirable wind noises, especially at high driving speeds.
In Figures 9 and 10 of the above Gebrauchsmuster, it is proposed to fill such a gap partially by an additional resilient member located on the door. The provision of such an additional member of course necessitates additional expense in terms of material and assembly.
The invention seeks to mitigate at least some of the above disadvantages and to provide a flexible drip-moulding strip which assures reliable drainage of the water collected when the door is opened, and which seals the gap around the door efficiently when the door is closed.
According to the present invention, there is provided a motor vehicle having a drip rail having an attached flexible drip-moulding strip and located in the gap between the door aperture and the door, the drip-moulding strip having a first limb secured to the drip rail and a free limb which projects beyond the adjacent body edges, when the door is opened, and is bent back towards the drip moulding by an edge portion of the door, when the door is closed, wherein the dripmoulding strip is formed in such a manner that when the door is closed the said free limb bridges the gap between the edge portions of the door and the surrounding door aperture and lies substantially flush with the adjacent body contour of the vehicie.
Because the drip-moulding strip is designed so that, when the door is closed, its free limb closes the gap between the door and the body tightly and lies flush with the adjacent body contour, disturbing wind noises which occur especially in the region of the A-column in previous body designs, are reliably prevented.
Advantageously, when the door is closed the limbs rest sealingly against one another but an inner channel remains free within the moulding strip so that residual water can be drained reliably and can be prevented from splashing out when the door is closed.
By means of an appropriate design of the crosssection of the free limb of the resilient dripmoulding strip, reliable closing of the gap between the door and the adjacent body contour can be achieved even in the case of different body tolerances.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a view of the A-column roof frame and the C-column region of a motor vehicle; Figure 2 shows a section along the line Il-Il in Figure 1, with the door opened; Figure 3 shows a section along the line Ill-Ill in Figure 1, with the door closed and; Figure 4 shows a similar sectioa--to that of Figure 3, but with the roof construction designed as a sandwich component.
Figure 1 shows a motor vehicle with a concealed drip-moulding which extends along the upper region of the door apertures, that is to say along the A-column 1, the roof frame 2 and the Ccolumn 3, and which is covered by the upper frame portions 4 and 5 of a front door 6 and a rear door 7, respectively.
As may be seen from Figure 2, the upper roof frame 2 consists of an outer plate 8, an inner plate 9 and a closing plate 10 which are connected to one another along the spot-welded flanges 11, 1 2 and 1 3. Furthermore, the roof frame proper 2 is connected by welding to the angled region 14 of a roof plate 15.
The spot-welded flange 1 3 is aligned essentially perpendicularly to the outer contour of the roof and forms with the angled region 14 of the roof plate 1 5 a drip rail which is completed by a resilient drip-mouiding strip 1 6 attached to the spot-welded flange 13.
The drip-moulding strip 16 has one limb 1 7 lying within the drip rail, being attached on the spot-welded flange 1 3 by its base via a receiving groove 1 8, whilst its other free limb 1 9 projects outwards to act as a drip channel.
Figure 3 shows the roof frame and the dripmoulding strip 16, with a conventional tubular chamber-type edge-sealing strip 20 located between the upper edge portion 5 of the door and the vehicle body. The edge portion 5 can consist in a conventional way of an outer plate 21 and an inner plate 22 which are connected to one another along a spot-welded flange 23 and a beaded flange 24, respectively. A known window-pane gasket 25 for a lowerable side window 26 can be fastened to the spot-welded flange 23.
When the door is closed, the beaded flange 24 forming the outer contour of the upper frame portion 5 interacts with the free limbs 1 9 of the drip-moulding strip 1 6 in such a way that it closes tightly the gap X between the edge of the door 7 and the adjacent body contour of the roof plate 1 5 and lies flush with the adjacent body contour.
When the limbs 17 and 19 of the drip-moulding strip 1 6 rest tightly against one another, there remains a channel 27 via which residual water is drained off. The channel 27 also prevents the residual water in the resilient drip-moulding strip 1 6 from splashing out when the door is closed.
Figure 4 shows a drip-moulding strip 16, according to a second embodiment of the invention, which needs to be explained only in so far as it differs from the design illustrated in Figure 3. The drip-moulding strip 1 6 is employed in the case of a motor vehicle roof which is designed as a sandwich component 28 and which is supported on a roof frame 2 via a bevelled edge region 29. In this case, the connection between the roof frame 2 and the sandwich component 28 can be made by bonding. Here, the bevelled edge region 29 forms a drip rail in which the flexible dripmoulding strip 1 6 can be arranged in a similar way to Figure 3. The parts of the drip-moulding strip 1 6 correspond to those of the embodiment according to Figure 3, but it has, in addition, a sealing lip 30 which overhangs the region of connection between the roof frame 2 and the motor-vehicle roof 28.
