Abstract
The frame of a folding push chair consists of a pair of triangular side frames (10, 12) interconnected by transverse members. A goods carrier (46) is secured to the frame behind the back rest portion of the seat (48) so that the centre of gravity of the loaded goods carrier is above the area of the wheel base of the push chair. The side frames (10) are simultaneously foldable to a position in which the various side members are parallel to and abutting one another, in which configuration the push chair can serve as a shopping trolley with the wheels (30) on the ground and the wheels (32) adjacent to the handle (34). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Push chair
This invention relates to folding push chairs and more particularly to folding push chairs having provision for carrying shopping.
An object of the invention is to provide a folding push chair provided with a shopping carrier which is stable when the shopping carrier is fully loaded and the seat is unoccupied.
According to the invention, a folding push chair comprises a frame assembly having a pair of triangular side frames rigidly interconnected by transverse members and each having a handle extending from one of its three corners and a wheel mounted at each of the other two corners, a seat having a seat portion and a back rest portion secured to the frame, and a goods carrier secured to the frame behind the back rest portion so that the centre of gravity thereof is above the area of the wheel base of the push chair, the side frames being simultaneously foldable to a position in which the various members of the side frame are parallel to and abutting one another and the handle and one wheel of each side frame project beyond the top of the carrier and the other wheel of each side frame projects beyond the bottom of the carrier.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a side view of a push chair in accordance with the invention in its unfolded position for normal use;
Figure 2 is a side view of the push chair shown in Figure 1 in its folded position; and
Figure 3 is a rear view corresponding to Figure 2 but with the goods carrier removed.
Referring to the drawings, a push chair is constructed from two side frames 10 and 12, each of which comprises a front wheel member 14, a rear wheel member 16, a handle member 18 and a seat member 20. Each front wheel member 14 has a pair of wheels 22 and 24 on one end and has a pivotal connector 26 at its other end to which is attached one end of the corresponding handle member 18. Each handle member 1 8 carries, at an intermediate position along its length, a pivotal connector 28 to which is attached one end of the corresponding rear wheel member 1 6 which has a pair of wheels 30 and 32 mounted on its other end.Each seat member 20 is pivotally connected at one end to an intermediate position on the rear wheel member 1 6 and, at a location spaced from its other end, to an intermediate position on the front wheel member 14. The positions of the pivotal connections of each seat member 20 are such that, when each front wheel member 14 is folded into abutment with the corresponding handle member 18, as shown in Figure 2, the corresponding rear wheel member 1 6 and seat member 20 are also parallel thereto.
In order to interconnect the two side frames 10 and 12, first and second transverse members 34 and 36 interconnect the handle members 18, third and fourth transverse members 38 and 40 interconnect the rear wheel members 1 6 and a fifth transverse member 42 interconnects the front wheel members 20. The transverse member 34 interconnects the free ends of the handle members 1 8 and serves as a convenient hand grip. The second transverse member 36 is located at an intermediate position on the handle members 1 8 and serves to support the top of the seat back portion 44 of the seat which is formed of canvas, or like flexible material.The fourth and fifth transverse members 40 and 42 are located close to the wheels on the corresponding wheel members 1 6 and 14 while the third transverse member 38 is located at a position between the connectors 28 and the pivotal connections of the seat members 20 and serves to retain a carrier 46 for shopping or like goods as will be explained hereinafter.
In addition to the seat back portion 44, the canvas or like material of the seat also has side portions 48 and 50 and a seat portion (not shown) which extends between the bottom edges of the side portions 48 and 50, where the latter are connected to the corresponding seat members 20.
The carrier 46, which may either be opentopped or have a hinged lid closing its top, has a pair of hooks 52 by which is is supported on the second transverse member 36, each hook engaging with the transverse member 36 between the edge of the seat back portion 44 and the corresponding handle member 1 8. The carrier 46 also has a pair of lower hook members 54 which engage with the third transverse member 38 and have long projecting end limbs so as to remain in engagement as the push chair is folded from the configuration shown in Figure 1 to the configuration shown in Figure 2.
As can be seen from Figure 1, when the push chair is in its normal unfolded condition, most of the carrier 46 is in front of the rear wheels 30 and 32. Consequently, assuming that the density of any goods packed therein is substantially uniform, its centre of gravity will be in the wheel base of the push chair which will then not tend to tilt backwards when a child gets out of the seat.
When the push chair is folded into the configuration shown in Figure 2, it can be used as a shopping trolley, its rear wheels 30 and 32 remaining in engagement with the ground.
In order to lock the push chair in the configuration shown in Figure 1 , the connectors 28 may be provided with over-centre toggle mechanisms of known type. The push chair may be locked in the configuration shown in Figure 2 by means of a catch (not shown) which couples one of the front wheel members 14 to the corresponding handle member 1 8 at a location adjacent to the wheels 22 and 24.
The carrier 46, which can readily be detached from the push chair, may be provided with separate carrying handles (not shown) if desired.
Claims (4)
1. A folding push chair comprising a frame assembly having a pair of triangular side frames rigidly interconnected by transverse members and each having a handle extending from one of its three corners and a wheel mounted at each of the other two corners, a seat having a seat portion and a back rest portion secured to the frame, and a goods carrier secured to the frame behind the back rest portion so that the centre of gravity thereof is above the area of the wheel base of the push chair, the side frames being simultaneously foldable to a position in which the various members of the side frame are parallel to and abutting one another and the handle and one wheel of each side frame project beyond the top of the carrier and the other wheel of each side frame projects beyond the bottom of the carrier.
2. A push chair according to claim 1 , wherein the carrier is secured to a transverse frame member at the top of the seat back.
3. A push chair according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the sides of the triangular frame members are pivotally connected to one another and one of said members has an articulated joint at an intermediate point between the corresponding corners of the triangle.
