Abstract

A cooking and water boiling stove has an annular water chamber (3) surrounding a fire (11) contained within the stove. The stove is provided with a support (8) for cooking above the fire. The boiling water can be decanted from the stove by means of a steam pressure operated syphon (6) or, with the syphon removed, the handle (14) may be used to pour the water. A cap (7) is fitted to the tube (6) if the chamber (3) is used as a water carrier. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cooking and water boiling stove This invention relates to improvements in stoves for the cooking of food and boiling water. It is suitable for use under primitive conditions where fuel is limited to natural supplies, for example in disaster zones or when camping.
The stove is constructed of metal sheets formed to create an annular chamber between two skins.
The inner skin is shaped as a chimney to create a natural draught and encourage combustion when a fire is lit within it and adequate space is allowed for air entry at the lower end.
The outer skin forms an enclosed annular chamber with the inner skin when the two skins are joined together. Through a suitable aperture the annular chamber may be filled with water to give a large heat transfer surface from the fire through the inner skin to the water.
The upper end of the stove is formed to provide support for a cooking vessel or pot above the flame and hot gases emitting from the chimney.
This provides a means of cooking food whilst being protected from the direct heat of the fire.
The construction ensures that a high proportion of the heat generated is usefully employed either for cooking or boiling water.
A feature of such an arrangement is that it is not convenient to remove the stove from the fire in order to decant the boiling water if the device is simultaneously in use for cooking. This is overcome by the provision of a steam operated siphon fitted in the aperture which automatically decants the boiling water as soon as sufficient steam pressure is generated within the annular chamber.
A handle may be provided if the stove is to be used solely for heating water so that it may be poured in the normal manner with the siphon arrangement removed.
The arrangement offers several advantages as follows: a. The induced draught makes is possible to use a wide range of alternative combustibles so that in most parts of the world fuel is readily available from natural sources.
b. The induced draught and the method of utilization of the heat generated makes it highly efficient so that only a relatively small amount of fuel is necessary.
c. The fire is contained and protected from ambient conditions such as high winds, rain or snow.
d. The fire is protected and relatively safe in use both from the user and the environmental points of view.
e. A handle fitted to the outer skin is protected from the fire giving a safe means of manipulation if required.
f. The steam siphon automatically decants the boiling water without interfering with the use of the stove for cooking.
g. If boiling water is not required the stove may be used solely for cooking. Alternatively water may be boiled alone.
h. The vessel may be used as a water carrier between usaqe as a stove.
An example of the apparatus is shown in the attached sectioned drawing Fig 1 and is described as follows:- The stove is shown constructed of a chimney 1, which contains the fire 1 surrounded by the outer skin 2, the two being conveniently joined together to form a water-tight annular chamber 3.
The outer skin has an aperture 4 to allow filling with water which can be sealed by a bung 5 carrying the siphon tube 6. A cap 7 is fitted to the tube 6 if the vessel is used as a water carrier. A handle 14 is fitted to the outer skin for manipulation if required.
The top of the stove has protrusions 8 to provide support for a cooking pot 13 and allow emission of the hot gases to sustain the draught.
The stove is shown supported on a simple wire frame 9 which provides adequate support and ensures the correct air gap 10 when placed on flat ground 12.
1. A portable water heating and cooking stove comprising: an annular water containing chamber surrounding a chimney in which a fire is contained; an extension to the chimney for supporting a cooking vessel; a steam pressure operated syphon which automatically decants boiling water without removing the stove from the fire; the same steam operated syphon is removable to allow the water to remain in the chamber to provide cooling during prolonged cooking, or alternatively a separate pressure venting system is provided.
