Abstract

A tough, chemical resistant coating, for example for the metal mesh or wire of a washing machine basket is composed of an olefinic polymer containing a sterically hindered phenolic antioxidant present in the range 1-3% by weight.

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and relating to polymeric coatings This invention concerns improvements in and relating to polymeric coatings for applications to metal surfaces, particularly in situations where a tough, chemical resistant coating is required.
In particular, the invention relates to an olefinic polymer based coating for application to, for example, the metal mesh or wire of a washing machine basket, which is commonly subject to sustained periods of high temperature, moisture and abrasion.
According to the present invention there is provided a composition of matter suitable for coating a metal substrate, the composition comprising an olefinic polymer containing at least 1% of an antioxidant.
The antioxidant is preferably a sterically hindered phenolic antioxidant.
The antioxidant is preferably pentaeritrityltetrakis-(3(3.5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)) propionate, hereinafter referred to as PETP, made by Ciba-Geigy AG and known commercially under the trade name Irganox 1010.
The antioxidant is preferably present in the range 13%.
The olefinic polymer is preferably a polypropylene homo- or co-polymer which contains up to about 70% by weight of modifying polymer such as polybutylene, preferably a polybutylene with a melt index in the range 7-20. Such modification unexpectedly eliminates porosity defects which arise if polypropylene is used on its own.
The composition may further contain an olefinic polymer modified to enhance the adherence of the composition to the metal substrate by the inclusion of reactive groupings.
It is found that a level of 13% of antioxidant compared with about 0.1% hitherto used gives an enhanced degree of toughness which would not be predicted from such an increase in the level of antioxidant.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the following nonlimiting embodiment.
A coating composition was made up according to the formulation: % by weight Polypropylene homopolymer 55.1 (melt index 30) Polybutylene (melt index 20) 36.7 Propylene/acrylic 6.4 acid copolymer Anti-oxidant stabilizer 1.8 (PETP) The propylene/acrylic acid copolymer was incorporated in order to enhance the adhesive qualities of the coating when applied to a metal substrate such as steel.
A washing machine basket made of steel wire was coated with the composition, which was found to possess freedom from porosity, toughness and resistance to heat and moisture superior to those which would be expected from an unmodified polypropylene containing the normal 0.1% of antioxidant. A pure polypropylene coating suffers from brittleness and porosity defects. The brittleness is greatly ameliorated by the high level of antioxidant according to the invention. The polybutylene further improves the toughness and gives the freedom from porosity.
Olefinic polymers other than polypropylene, such as polyethylene or olefinic copolymers may be used as the base polymer. Similarly, other olefinic polymers may be used in place of the polybutylene modifying polymer.
The composition additionally may contain a quantity of pigmentary or other fillers.
