Description

SPECIFICATION Sheet for ornamentation The present invention generally relates to an ornamental sheet to be attached to a body of a vehicle or other object for ornamentation.
Ornaments are often applied to surfaces, inside or outside, of a vehicle body. Such ornaments are forme by coating with paint of a desired color, or attaching a sheet which is made of a polyvinyl chloride mixed with a pigment of a desired color and cut into a desired shape. However, an ornament formed by paint coating is poor in durability and weatherproofness compared with other painted surfaces of the vehicle body because a paint layer coated on a metal-plated surface is insufficient in adherence and liable to peel off during washing the vehicle body, for example. Besides, an ornament of this kind requires additional troublesome paint coating process. On the other hand, an ornament formed with an adhesive sheet is relatively improved in durability and advantageous in labour effectiveness compared with an ornament formed by paint coating. However, an ornament formed with such a sheet is still unsatisfactory in weatherproofness, and the resistance to scratches is not enough because the ornament is made of a single film layer.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an ornamental sheet so improved as to provide good weatherproofness and scratchproofness.
According to the present invention, a sheet for ornamentation comprises a laminate which comprises a resin film to be attached, on one surface thereof, to an object to be decorated, a colored layer applied to the other surface of the resin film, and a transparent film hermetically covering the colored layer. Preferably, the transparent film is made of a weatherproof resin such as polyfluoroethylene.
In the accompanying drawings:- Fig. 1 is a side view showing an automobile body to which the present invention is applied.
Fig. 2 is a front view of an exterior door handle of the automobile body of Fig. 1, showing a portion to which the ornamental sheet of the present invention is applied.
Fig. 3 is a sectiona view taken along the line Ill-Ill of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing a conventional structure of an ornamental sheet.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the structure of the oranmental sheet of the present invention.
Ornaments are often applied to an automobile body 1 ,for example, on an exterior door handle 2, rear pillars 3, or front pillars 4. For example, such an ornament is attached to an exterior door handle as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A handle member 5 of the door handle 2 is formed with a depression 6, and an ornament 7 is applied to the depression 6 after a process of chromium plating of the door handle. The ornament 7 is made of a resin sheet which is prepared to have a desired color and cut into a shape fitting the depression 6. The door handle 2 further has an escutcheon 8 and a key cylinder 9 for a door lock. The door handle 2 abuts on a door panel 1 6 with rubbers 20 interposed therebetween, and is fastened to the door panel 16 with a bolt 18 and a nut 19.
For a better understanding of the present invention, a conventional structure of a sheet used as the ornament 7 is shown in Fig. 4. This structure comprises a single film layer 10 of a polyvinyl chloride mixed with a pigment. The underside of the layer 10 is coated with an adhesive 11 , which is covered and protected by a parting paper 12. The sheet can be attached to the vehicle body by stripping the parting paper 12 from the sheet and then pressing the sheet with the adhesive side down into the depression 6.
However, the thus constructed ornament is unsatisfactory because it is poor in weatherproofness and susceptible to scratches.
For example, scratches can be easily made by fingernails when a operator thrusts his hand into a space 1 7 of the door handle to open or close the door.
Fig. 5 shows the structure of the ornamental sheet according to the present invention, which is a laminate structure comprising a bottom layer 1 5 made of a transparent resin film, a colored layer 14 which is made of ink or other coloring matter and applied to the upper side of the bottom layer 15, and a surface layer 13 made of a transparent weatherproof film. Adhesive 11 is applied between the surface layer 13 and the colored layer 14, and on the underside of the bottom layer 1 5. The adhesive 11 applied to the underside of the bottom layer 1 5 is covered by a parting paper 12. The resin film of the bottom layer 1 5 is made of a polyvinyl chloride or other material. The colored layer 14 is formed through printing and baking with an ink prepared to have a desired color. The weatherproof film of the surface layer 1 3 is made of a polyfluoroethylene or vinyl fluoride resin, or other material having good weatherproofness. Optionally, the resin film 1 5 and the weatherproof film 13 made of a resin may be bonded by pressing at an elevated temperature.
After the thus constructed ornamental sheet is cut into a desired shape and then the parting paper is stripped off, the sheet is attached to the vehicle body to form an ornament. The thus formed ornament has a good resistance against scratches because its surface is made of the weatherproof film. Furthermore, the durability of the colored layer is significantly improved because it is hermetically protected by the weatherproof film. Even if the coloring matter is mixed with aluminum powder of other reflective powder, the hermetical sealing of the colored layer 14 by the weatherproof film prevents such powder from oxidation. Because of its laminate structure, the ornamental sheet of the present invention has a greater thickness than that of the conventional one, so that it is easier to handle during the attachment process. If the colored layer is formed by printing, a wide variety of color can be more easily prepared than in the case of the colored layer formed by mixing a pigment with the resin.
