Abstract

An aerial assembly comprises a mast 10 and boom 11 connected together perpendicularly with respect to one another by a clamp having two identical parts 12, 13, one of which, 12, partially embraces the boom 11 and the other part, 13, being orientated the same way, and having formations 21, 22, 23, 24 to locate the mast 10. The two parts 12, 13 are interconnected by a U or V bolt 14 embracing the mast 10. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Bracket This invention relates to brackets for connecting an aerial boom to an aerial mast so that these components extend substantially perpendicular to each other.
Several types of bracket have been proposed for this purpose, many being pressed metal and having bolts for clamping purposes. Since the aerial mast which is normally mounted vertically is usually of circular section whereas the horizontal boom is usually square section, the bracket should have different portions of quite different shape to accommodate and locate these.
This tends to lead to complication in manufacture, whether by pressing or otherwise and consequently most existing brackets are relatively expensive.
It is the object of the invention to provide a bracket particularly for connecting an aerial boom to an aerial mast which is simple to construct and relatively inexpensive but which has good location for the boom and mast.
According to the invention there is provided a bracket for connecting two components transversely with respect to one another, comprising two identical parts, one of which in use, partially embraces one of the components, the other part having formations disposed to locate the other component and the two parts being interconnected by a U or V bolt which embraces said other of the components.
Preferably the parts have alternative openings to accept the U or V bolt in different positions to accommodate components of different sizes.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which; Figure 1 is an exploded view of an aerial mast and boom assembly with a bracket constructed in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is an assembled view of an alternative construction.
Figure 1 shows an aerial mast 10 which in general is mounted in an upright position, and a boom 11 which is mounted horizontally and therefore transversely with respect to the mast 10. The mast as shown is of circular section whereas the boom 11 is of square section. There are a number of standard sizes in common use, the mast 10 being either 1 inch or 2 inch diameter and the boom being 1 5 mm square of 43 of an inch square.
To connect the boom 11 to the mast 10 and to hold it rigidly in its horizontal position a bracket is used. This comprises two identical pressed metal parts 12,13 and a U or V bolt 14. Each such part 12, 13 is of generally channel shape with a centre portion 1 5 forming the base of the channel. To one side of this and in the plane of the portion 1 5 is a lug 16 having an oblong hole 17. At the other end of the portion 1 5 and extending in the opposite direction from the lug 1 6 is a further coplanar lug 1 8 with two holes 19, 20. Opposite each lug 16 and 18 is a bent flange 21,22.
Between each flange 21,22 and the lug 1 6, 18 on the same side is a triangular small flange 23, 24. The edge of each flange 21, 22 adjacent to the triangular flange 23 24 is inclined to a plane perpendicular to the length of the centre portion 15 so that the two pairs of flanges 21, 23 and 22, 24 defined between them a V shaped slot. The inner or apex end of this slot is rounded and can engage the mast 10. The shape of the V shaped slot is such as to accommodate a smaller sized mast against said radius apex but larger diameter masts do not penetrate into the slot to the same extent.
As shown in the drawing one of the parts 13 of the bracket is mounted with the V shaped slot engaging the mast 10, whereas the other is mounted in the same orientation but at the opposite side of the boom 11, so that the flanges 21 22, 23, 24 partially embrace the boom 11.
To secure the two parts 1 2, 1 3 together and also to hold the mast 10 in the V shaped slots in the part 13 while at the same time securing the boom 11 between the two bracket parts 12, 13, the U or V shaped bolt 14 has its two parallel limbs extending through the oblong holes 1 7 and through alternative ones of the holes 1 9, 20 in the two bracket parts. As shown with a smaller sized mast 10 the bolt 14 passes through the holes 20 which are nearer to the flanges 22 on the opposite side of the same end of the bracket part.
If a larger boom 11 is used the other holes 19 are used. These are further away from the flange 22 and allow the boom to be firmly engaged between the flanges 21, 22, 23, 24 which it does not do the same extent when a smaller boom 11 is fitted. The oblong hole 1 7 provides accommodation for changing position of the end of the bolt 14 with alternative mast sizes.
The bolt 14 has threaded ends on which nuts 25, 26 are fitted.
Figure 2 shows an alternative arrangement in which the mast 10 and boom 11 are held in place by two identical side channel shaped bracket parts 28, 29. Each such part has a dished base to the channel, with four holes 31 to accept the ends of a U or V bolt 32 on which are nuts 33. Each bracket part 28, 29 has opposite side flanges, each with a cut out 34 of stepped V shape. The cut outs 34 are shaped and dimensioned to accommodate booms 11 of different sizes and will accept booms of square or round shape.
To locate the boom on the face of the part 28 there are dimples 35.
As shown in Figure 2, one of the parts 28 is mounted with its flanges located at the mast 10.
The other part 29 is rotated through 900 and partially encloses the boom 11. The ends of the bolt 32 pass through aligned holes 35 in both parts to secure the assembly together.
