Abstract

An electric room heating appliance comprises a casing 12 having an upper grill 13 and a lower grill 14 connected by an air passage. in the passage are electric heating elements 15 and a tangential fan 16. Selector switches operate the appliance in a first mode with only the electric heating elements energized so that a convection air movement occurs up the air passage or in a second mode with both the heating elements and the fan energized so that air is drawn down the air passage and expelled through lower grill 14. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Room Heating Appliances This invention relates to room heating appliances which operate by heating and circulating air.
The invention provides a room heating appliance comprising a housing having a first air opening at or near its base, and a second air opening at or near its top, means providing an airway allowing airflow between said openings,.
electric heating means in said air-way, fan means in said air-way positioned to cause air to flow over said heating means and out of said first air opening and switch means for selectively energizing the electric heating means and the fan means.
Preferably said first air opening is in a top horizontal surface of the housing. Said fan means may be a tangential fan.
A specific embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying diagrammatic representation of an electric room heating appliance.
The appliance comprises a narrow box-like casing 12 having an upper open grill 13 in its horizontal upper surface. Near the bottom of the vertical front surface is a lower open grill 14.
Within the casing are electric heating elements 1 5 for heating air passing over them. A tangential fan 1 6 is located to pull air down over the heating elements 1 5 and to blow it out of the lower grill 14.
The appliance may be operated through selector switches (not shown) in three different ways. In a first mode, the heating elements 1 5 only are energized. The heat induces a convection air current passing in through lower grill 14, up over the heating elements where it is heated and out through the upper grill 13. This produces a gentle current of warm air which, however, is only slowly distributed over the space to be heated.
In a second mode, the heating elements 1 5 and the fan 1 6 are energized. The fan pulls air down through the upper grill 13, over the elements 1 5 and out into the space to be heated through the lower grill 14. This produces a strong current of warm air located close to the floor. This will tend to cling to the floor and will move rapidly over a wide area. A more even and rapid heating of the space with reduced air temperature variations will therefore be produced. It will be noted that the direction of air flow through the appliance is reversed in this mode of operation.
Because the air is drawn in through the horizontal top face of the appliance from the upper part of the space, there is little likelihood of immediate recirculation of the air leaving the lower grill 14.
This also helps reduce temperature gradients in the space by pulling down the warm air which tends to rise to the upper part.
In a third mode, the fan 1 6 only is energized, not the heating elements. This produces a flow of cool air through lower grill 14 to cool and freshen the space in which the appliance is located.
In an alternative arrangement in the first mode of operation only, a portion (e.g. a half) of the heating elements 1 5 is energized, the full power being used for the second mode.
Claims
1. A room heating appliance comprising a housing having a first air opening at or near its base and a second air opening at or near its top, means providing an air-way allowing air flow between said openings, electric heating means in said air-way, fan means in said air-way positioned to cause air to flow over said heating means and out of said first air opening and switch means for selectively energizing the electric heating means and the fan means.
2. A room heating appliance as claimed in claim 1, wherein said second air opening is in a top horizontal surface of the housing.
3. A room heating appliance as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said first air opening is in a vertical front surface of the housing and said fan means is a tangential fan located adjacent said first air opening, to draw air in through said second air opening.
4. A room heating appliance as claimed in claim 3, wherein said electric heating means comprises a plurality of heating elements located above said fan.
5. A room heating appliance as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, wherein said switch means has a first manually selectable position in which the electric heating means is energized but not the fan means, so that heated air flows up the airway, and a second position in which both the electric heating means and the fan are energized so that air is pulled down the air-way, heated and expelled from the said first air opening.
6. A room heating appliance as claimed in claim 5, wherein said switch means energizes a portion only of the electric heating means in said first position and all of the electric heating means in said second position.
7. A room heating appliance as claimed in claim 5 or claim 6, wherein said switch means has a third manually selectable position in which the fan means is energized but not the electric heating means.
