Description

SPECIFICATION Cutter tool equipment for mining machines This invention relates to cutter tool equipment for mining machines.
In particular, the present invention relates to cutter tool equipment for mining machines, for example machines used in the mining of coal, where cutter tools are required to cut rock and/or mineral at relatively high speeds in potentially inflammable or explosive atmospheres.
During the cutting operation a cutter tool mcunted on a rotary cutter head is moved through the rock and/or mineral in order to break or cut the material. As the cutting margin of the cutter tool is moved through relatively hard rock and/or mineral friction acting between the cutting margin and the material being cut tends to heat up the cutting margin to such an extent that in some installations particles of cut material left behind the cutter tool are sufficiently heated to ignite the potentially inflammable or explosive atmosphere existing behind the cutter tool.
An object of the present invention is to provide a cutter tool for a mining machine which tends to overcome or reduce the above mentioned problem.
According to the present invention a cutter tool for a mining machine comprises a body defining a leading cutting margin and adapted to fixedly engage with a cutter tool holder mounted on a cutter head of the mining machine, and a fluid guide defined by at least a portion of the cutter tool body, the fluid guide having a discharge at the rear of the cutting margin.
Preferably, the fluid guide comprises a passage extending through at least a portion of the cutter tool body, the passage having an outlet at the rear of the cutting margin.
Preferably, at least a portion of the fluid passage substantially extends alongs or parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cutter tool.
Conveniently, the outlet of the fluid passage is adapted to receive an outlet nozzle.
Advantageously, a fluid seal is provided on the cutter tool for sealable engagement with the cutter tool holder.
Preferably, the cutter tool body comprises a shank portion, the fluid seal being mounted on the shank portion.
Preferably, the shank portion comprises a portion which is cylindrical, the fluid seal comprising an '0' ring.
The present invention also provides a cutter tool assembly for a mining machine, comprising a cutter tool and a cutter tool holder mountable on a cutter head of the mining machine, the cutter tool comprising a body adapted to be releasably, fixedly engaged with the cutter tool holder, the cutter tool body defining a leading cutting margin and a fluid passage having a discharge at the rear of the cutting margin.
Preferably, the fluid guide comprises a passage extending through at least a portion of the cutter tool body, the passage having an outlet at the rear of the cutting margin.
Preferably, a fluid supply passageway is provided in, or adjacent to, the cutter tool holder, the passageway having a fluid discharge for supplying fluid to the fluid guide.
Preferably, the fluid discharge from the supply passageway directs fluid to flow into the fluid guide.
Preferably, the fluid discharge from the supply passageway is provided with an outlet nozzle for controlling fluid flow along the supply passageway.
Conveniently, the discharge from the fluid passage in the cutter tool is adapted to receive an outlet nozzle.
Advantageously, a fluid seal is provided between the cutter tool and the cutter tool holder.
Preferably, the cutter tool body comprises a shank portion and the tool holder defines a recess for receiving the shank portion, the fluid seal being mounted on the shank portion.
Preferably, the shank portion comprises at least a portion which is cylindrical, the fluid seal comprising an '0' ring.
Advantageously, a device is provided to releasably retain the cutter tool in engagement with the cutter tool holder.
Preferably, the cutter tool is provided with means enabling the tool to be disengaged from the tool holder. Conveniently, the means comprising abutment means.
By way of example only, two embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic section taken through a portion of a rotary cutter head of a mining machine, the portion comprising a cutter tool in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 2 is a diagrammatic section taken through a portion of a rotary cutter head of a mining machine, the portion comprising a cutter tool in accordance with a second embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 1 shows a portion of a rotary cutter head 1 having a cylindrical barrel component 2 fixedly mounted on the hub (not shown) for drivable connection on a driven shaft of a mining machine for example, a well known shearer coal mining machine arranged to traverse to and fro along a working face in an underground coal seam.
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic sectional view taken along a plane including the longitudinal axis of the rotary cutter head.
A generally helical cut material loading vane 4 is fixedly secured around the barrel component 2 such that in use when the cutter head rotates material cut by the cutter head is urged by the loading vane towards a conveyor (not shown) extending along the working face.
A plurality of cutter tool holders 5 (only one of which is shown in the drawing) are secured by welding to cut outs or pockets formed in the radially outermost margins of the loading vane.
Each cutter tool holder 5 defines a generally cylindrical recess 6 for releasably, fixedly accommodating a generally cylindrical shank portion of a cutter tool 7, the shank portion having an annular groove 8 for engagement by a plunger 9 of a tool locking device 10 which comprises a resilient means for urging the plunger towards the groove to retain the shank portion in the recess and which has an abutment 11 for engagement by a lever (not shown) for drawing the plunger against the resilient bias to release the shank portion and permit extraction of the cutter tool from the holder The cutter tool 7 has a body which is constituted ;n part by the shank component and which defines a leading cutting margin 12 made of relatively hard material, for example, tungsten carbide. As seen in the drawing as the cutter head rotates to move the cutter tool 7 towards the rock and/or mineral in a direction indicated by arrowX, the leading cutting margin 12 penetrates the rock and/or mineral material to a depth indicated by double headed arrow Y.
The cutter tool 7 has a fluid guide constituted by a passage 15 substantially extending along the longitudinal axis of the cutter tool, the passage having a fluid discharge outlet 1 6 adjacent to the rear of the cutting margin 12, for directing a jet or spray of fluid 18 into a zone closely adjacent to the rear of the cutting margin 12. Typically, the fluid is dust suppression liquid, for example water.
The fluid passage 1 5 is supplied with fluid from a fluid passageway 20, 21 and 22 extending through cutter tool holder and loading vane and around the barrel component 2. The passageway has a discharge 23 adjacent to the cutter tool shank portion and arranged to direct fluid flow into the passage 15, the discharge 23 being provided with an outlet nozzle 24 for controlling fluid flow from the passageway 20, 21 and 22. A filter device 25 is provided in the passageway to prevent relatively coarse particles entrained in the fluid flow from reaching and at least partially blocking the outlet nozzle. A resilient seal 26 is located around the shank portion of the cutter tool to prevent leakage of fluid between the shank component and the wall of the recess in the holder.Conveniently, at least a portion of the shank portion is cylindrical and in which case the resilient seal comprises an '0' ring.
During the rock and/or mineral cutting operation fluid, typically dust suppression liquid, for example, water fed along the passageway 20, 21 and 22 is directed by the discharge nozzle 24 into the passage 15, the jet or spray 18 being discharged from the passage discharge 1 6 into the zone 27 closely adjacent to the rear of the cutting margin 12 of the cutter tool 7.
Consequently, any particles in this zone which have become heated by friction acting between the cutting margin and the material being cut tend to be cooled by the fluid in the jet or spray and any danger of such particles igniting the potentially inflammable or explosive atmosphere tends to be eliminated or reduced. The potentially inflammable or explosive atmosphere is caused by the accumulation of methane in the zone behind the relatively rapidly moving cutter tool.
Figure 2 is a similar view to Figure 1 but showing a second embodiment of the present invention. In Figure 2 similar reference numbers have been used for similar items to those discussed previously with reference to Figure 1.
In Figure 2 the outlet 16 of the fluid passage 15 in the cutter tool body is adapted to releasably, fixedly receive a discharge nozzle 37.
In other embodiments of the present invention the discharge nozzle 24 located at the discharge from the passageway 20,21 and 22 is dispensed with.
In further embodiment the discharge from the passageway 21, 22 is located in the loading vane 4 adjacent to the cutter tool holder and in which case the fluid guide may be defined by an outer rear or side face of the cutter tool, the face being formed to guide fluid towards the zone 27 at the rear of the cutting margin 12.
In still further embodiment of the present invention the cross section of the shank portion of the cutter tool is non-cylindrical for example it may be rectangular or square.
From the above description it will be appreciated that the present invention provides a cutter tool which tends to overcome or reduce ignition problems on coal faces.
