Abstract

Members (1) for frames for bulletproof doors and windows include one or more strips (2) of hard armour steel, preferably parallel to the window pane (3). Preferably two or more overlapping strips are used, particularly for openable windows or doors. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Bulletproof Profile for Window- and Doorframes This invention relates to profile for windowand door-frames adapted to receive panes of bulletproof glass.
Profiles made of steel tubes are known, which are used for the manufacture of frames for windows and doors. Normally, plate glass is inserted in these profile frames for all kinds of purposes. When known profile frames are used for panes of bulletproof glass however, it is found that frames and armour made of normal structural steel are easily penetrated, at least when hardcore ammunition is used.
The aim of the present invention is to provide profiles for window- and door-frames which can receive bulletproof toughened glass, which profiles may also be adequately bulletproof in the frame zone. To this end, the invention provides a profile for window- and door-frames adapted to receive panes of bulletproof glass, which profile has prefabricated strips of armour steel therein.
Preferably, the strips of armour steel are received in slots defined in the profile. In another preferred feature a plurality of strips are mounted side by side in the profile with adjacent strips overlapping. This is particularly desirable when the window or door is openable, the strips overlapping in the closed position.
In a window or door comprising a frame made up of profiles according to the invention it is preferred that the strip or the strips of armour steel are mounted in planes parallel to that of the adjacent pane of glass.
The principal advantage of the invention is that the weak points hitherto obtained in the structures of window-, partition- and door-frames can readily and effectively be eliminated.
However, in other respects the hitherto conventional system can be retained.
Consequently, the conventional production methods can also be used when producing the frame constructions. Moreover, by using glassretaining strips of different widths, which are known per se, any desired thickness of bulletproof glass can be fitted.
Hard armour steels frequently give the only effective protection but the steels are very difficult to machine owing to the nature of the material.
According to the invention, the strips need not be exposed at the surface of the frame and furthermore, steel strips prepared beforehand may be used which have only to be pushed in.
The invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings which schematically show some frame profiles according to the invention for various types of application. In the drawings Figure 1 shows a frame construction for a door or window flap; Figure 2 shows a frame construction for fixedly installed bulletproof glass.
As shown in Figure 1, prefabricated strips 2 of hard armour steel are pushed into the inside of the profile frame 1 both at the front and at the back.
The pane 3 of bulletproof glass is fitted in the usual way and is correctly held by means of a glass-retaining strip 4. In this embodiment, every conceivable direction of bombardment with longrange weapons and small arms is protected.
In Figure 2, the frame 1 is fixedly installed, the strips 2 of hard armour steel being inserted at the outside of the frame 1. As shown by the drawing, which is interrupted in the centre, the thickness of the panes of bulletproof glass 3 can be varied by using glass-retaining strips 4 of different widths.
