Abstract

Dispersible powder compositions of amitraz contain xanthates of formula <IMAGE> where M is sodium, potassium or zinc and R is alkyl preferably C2 to C6 alkyl. The compositions also contain dispersing and/or wetting agents and grinding aids and/or solid diluents.

Description

SPECIFICATION Pesticidal compositions This invention relates to pesticidal compositions and in particular to compositions containing the pesticidal compound, amitraz.
Amitraz has the chemical formula 1,5-di (2,4-dimethylphenyl) 3-methyl 1,3,5-triazapenta-1,4-diene and has a wide range of insecticidal and acaricidal properties as described in British Patent Specification 1,327,935.
One form of composition containing amitraz is a dispersible powder composition in which the amitraz in finely divided form is intimately mixed with one or more solid dispersing agents so that a stable aqueous dispersion of the amitraz is formed on mixing the powder composition with water. In order that decomposition of the amitraz does not occur on storage a stabilising agent has to be included in dispersible powder compositions.
The present invention provides a dispersible powder composition of amitriaz and a xanthate of formula
in which M is sodium potassium or zinc and R is alkyl.
The compositions may contain from 10 to 80 % by weight of the composition of amitraz. Preferred compositions may contain 50% of amitraz.
The xanthate may be present in an amount from 1.5 to 5% by weight of the composition.
Preferred xanthates contain an alkyl group having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and suitable xanthates include sodium ethyl xanthate, potassium ethyl xanthate, sodium isopropyl xanthate, potassium isopropyl xanthate, zinc isopropyl xanthate, sodium isobutyl xanthate, sodium secondary butyl xanthate, potassium amyl xanthate, and potassium hexyl xanthate.
The compositions conveniently include a wetting agent in an amount from 0.5 to 3.0% by weight. One suitable wetting agent is a dioctylsulphosuccinate sold under the trade name Aerosol OT-B.
Dispersing agents are included in the compositions of the present invention so that a stable aqueous dispersion forms when the composition is mixed with water. The dispersing agent may comprise from 5 to 15% by weight of the composition and suitable materials include cresol sulphonic acid/formaldehyde condensates such as that sold under the trade name Dyapol PT.
Other wetting and/or dispersing agents may be included in the compositions of the present invention for example salts of polycarboxylic acids, polyacrylamides, lignosulphonates, alkyl naphthalene sulphonates and dodecyl benzene sulphonates.
The solid compositions of the invention are in finely divided form and a grinding aid is optionally included to ensure that, during manufacture all the particles are reduced to the desired size. A suitable grinding aid would be diatomaceous earth, for example that sold under the trade name Celite PF.
A solid diluent may be included such as for example calcium carbonate.
The grinding aid may comprise the solid diluent in the composition and suitable materials include gypsum, clays such as attapulgite, kaolin, montmorillonite and talc, synthetic silicates and synthetic hydrated silicon doixide.
Additional pesticidal compounds may be included in the compositions of the present invention.
The invention will be illustrated by the following Example which is given by way of example only.
Example A dispersible powder composition containing amitraz was prepared and had the following components. All percentages are expressed by weight of the total composition.
amitraz 50 potassium ethyl xanthate 3 dioctyl sulphosuccinate (wetting agent) (Aerosol OT-B) 1 (dispersing agent) (Dyapol PT) 10 diatomaceous earth (Celite PF) 1 9 calcium carbonate balance The components of the composition were mixed together and ground in an air jet mill so that the particle size of the components was in the range 5 to 1 5 microns. Samples of the composition were stored at 50"C for four months and the amount of amitraz present was determined by gas-liquid chromatrography. It was found that only 6.6% of the amitraz had decomposed whereas for a similar composition in which no xanthate was present, 27.4% of the amitraz had decomposed when stored under the same conditions.
1. A dispersible powder composition of amitraz and a xanthate of formula
in which M is sodium, potassium or zinc and R is alkyl.
2. A dispersible powder composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the alkyl group contains 2 to 6 carbon atoms.
3. A dispersible powder composition as
