Abstract

A damping support for suspending a body on a supporting structure comprises a tubular mounting body 10 for fixing to the supporting structure, an attaching body 18 for fixing to the body, and connected between them an annular, elastomeric element 20. A resilient membrane 38 defines, together with the annular elastomeric element 20, a chamber internally of the tubular mounting body 10 filled with a fluid. A transverse separator 52 subdivides the chamber into two secondary chambers 76, 78 and comprises a rigid peripheral portion 54 which is deflectable to an extent limited by arresting means 68, 70, and has an aperture 66. If used to mount a vehicle engine, high frequency low amplitude movements of the engine are not fluid damped, changes in volume in the chamber being accommodated by deflection of the separator, but low frequency high amplitude movements from the suspension are damped by flow through the aperture. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Damping support for suspending an oscillating body on a support structure The invention relates to a damping support for suspending an oscillating body on a support structure, in particular for suspending an engine on a chassis of a motor vehicle.

Damping supports of the type referred to above make it possible to dissipate part of the energy of the oscillating body and consequently to damp down the vibrations of this body to a degree which is sufficient to prevent oscillations occuring having excessive amplitude as could otherwise exist for example, where the frequency of vibration of the oscillating body is close to its natural period of vibration. In some applications it is desirable to provide for a high degree of damping in the case of oscillations of the oscillating body having a large amplitude, and an extremely reduced damping action in the case of small amplitude oscillations.In particular, when dealing with the suspension of the engine on the chassis of a motor vehicle it is necessary to provide damping supports which are in a position to damp down effectively the normally low frequency, large amplitude oscillations of the engine when it is runningat allow number of revolutions per minute and in the case when the vehicle is subject to sharp jolts caused by irregularities in the road surface, whilst, on the other hand, when the engine is running at a high speed, it is necessary for the damping provided by the supports to be reduced as much as is possible so as to isolate the motor from the chassis and ensure smooth running conditions.

In accordance with the present invention a damping support for suspending a body on a supporting structure comprises a tubular mounting body for fixing to the supporting structure; an attaching body for fixing to the body, the attaching body being coaxial with the tubular mounting body and connected thereto by means of an annular, elastomeric element the radially outer surface of which is fixed to the tubular body and the radially inner surface of which is fixed to the attaching body; wherein the attaching body is coaxial with the annular, elastomeric element one end of the attaching body extending beyond the elastomeric element, and the tubular mounting body is provided with a transverse wall formed by a resilient membrane which is located, with respect to the annular, elastomeric element at the end which is opposed to the end from which the attaching body extends, the resilient membrane defining, together with the annular elastomeric element, a chamber internally of the tubular mounting body, the chamber being filled with a shockabsorbing fluid, a transverse separator subdividing the chamber into two secondary chambers the transverse separator being made up by a rigid periperal portion which is fixed to the internal surface of the tubular mounting body and by a deformable, elastomeric, central portion provided with a central aperture which allows fluid communication between the two secondary chambers; and arresting means carried by the tubular mounting body limiting axial deformation of the central portion of the transverse separator in either axial direction with respect to a central rest position.

With this arrangement a damping support is provided in which a fluid-dynamic shock absorber only comes into operation after the amplitude of vibrations of the suspended body exceeds a given value, which is also particularly robust and reliable and which presents high operating efficiency.

An example of a support constructed in accordance with the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is an axial crosssection.

With reference to the drawing, reference numeral 10 indicates a tubular metallic mounting body provided at one extremity with an annular flange 1 2 which allows it to be fixed to the frame of a motor vehicle a part of which is shown diagrammatically at 14, by means of bolts 1 6 extending parallel to the axis of the body 10.

Reference numeral 18 indicates a metallic attaching body which is intended to be fixed to the engine of the vehicle (not shown) and is supported concentrically by the tubular mounting member 10 at its end portion remote from the flange 1 2. The attaching body 1 8 comprises a bush portion having a substantially frusto-conical shape, the outer surface of which is welded coaxially to the inner surface of an annular, elastomeric element 20 the outer surface of which has a metal ring 22 welded to it which is rigidly locked in an internally formed annular recess 24 provided at the end portion of tubular mounting member 10 remote from the flange 1 2. The element 20 is made from an elastomeric material having a very low value of internal damping, or in other words very low elastic hysteresis, and has an upper wall 26 which is concave and a lower wall 28 which is concave-convex.

The attaching body 1 8 is connected at one end to the lower wall 28 of the annular element 20, whilst the other end extends externally of the tubular mounting body 1 û.

The attaching body 1 8 is provided with an axial hole 30 which is internally screwthreaded at its outer end 31 and which changes over at its internal end to a narrow screw-threaded passages 32 in which an externally screw-threaded plug 34 is screwed.

Reference numeral 38 indicates a transverse resilient, elastomeric membrane the radially outer surface of which is welded to the internal surface of a metal sleeve 40. The sleeve 40 is locked coaxially in a sealed manner, by means of a toric rubber ring 42, to the inside of the tubular mounting body 10 at the opposite end of the annular element 20. The resilient membrane 38 has a cylindrical central portion 44, the extreme faces of which join up with an upper annular surface having a concave shape 46 and a lower annular surface 48 also having a concave shape. The lower part of the cylindrical central region 44 incorporates a metal stiffening disc 50.

Reference numberal 52 indicates a transverse separator which is inserted inside the tubular mounting member 10 between the annular element 20 and the resilient membrane 38. The transverse separator 52 comprises a flattened rigid ring 54 having an internal annular rib 56 which supports an elastomeric ring 58 arranged concentrically to it. The internal wall of the ring 58 has an annular groove 60 into which engages an annular flange 62 of a rigid bush 64. A cavity is provided in bush 64 comprising a caiibrated hole 66 which is arranged coaxially with respect to the tubular mounting body 10.

The transverse separator 52 furthermore comprises a pair of rigid rings 68, 70 which are arranged coaxially on opposite sides of the flattened ring 54. The radially outer portions of the ring 54 and the rings 68 and 70 are locked against axail movement inside the tubular mounting body 10 in the annular space formed between the internal surface of the tubular mounting body 10 and the mutually facing surfaces of the collar 22 and the sleeve 40.

The elastomeric ring 58 has an axial thickness which is less than the thickness of the rigid ring 54, and is consequently free to deform resiliently so as to provide resilient springing in the axial direction of the bush 64. The resilient deformation of the elastomeric ring 58 is limited axially in the two senses by the rigid rings 68, 70 the internal extreme edges of which are arranged so as to correspond radially with the extreme internal edge of the elastomeric ring 58.

The rigid rings 68, 70 are furthermore provided with a plurality of concentric holes 72, 74 extending in the axial direction and which are angularly spaced with respect to each other and arranged close to the external edge of the ring 58. The holes 72, 74 allow axial fiow of shock absorbing fluid into and out of chambers provided between the elastomeric ring 58 and the rigid rings 68, 70 respectively.

The transverse separator 52 defines, inside the tubular body 10, together with the annular element 20 and the elastic membrane 38, a first chamber 76 having variable volume and a second chamber 78 having variable volume which communicate with each other through the calibrated hole 66. The chambers 76, 78 are filled with a shock absorbing fluid which is introduced through passage 32 of the attaching body 18.

In use, the damping support described above is fixed to the frame of a motor vehicle in the manner described above. The screwthreaded portion of the hole 30 of the attaching body 1 8 is designed to receive a correspondingly screw-threaded body, not shown in the drawing, which is rigidly fixed to a part of the engine of the motor vehicle. During operation of the engine and/or during running of the vehicle the damping support is abie to damp down elastically both the oscillations of the engine which are directed along the axis of tubular body 10, and oscillations which are perpendicular to the axis.The support described furthermore performs powerful shock absorbing action when the motor is performing oscillations of large amplitude, corresponding for example to the condition when the motor is running at low r.p.m. or when a sharp jolt of the vehicle occurs caused by irregularities in the road surface, and performs extremely reduced shock absorbing action in the case of oscillations of small amplitude, corresponding to running of the motor at high r.p.m. Actually, in the first case, resilient deformation of the ring 20 causes substantial variation in the volume of the chamber 76 which initially causes resilient deformation of the ring 58 of the transverse separator 52 up to the point where it becomes arrested by the ring 70.

Following this, the ring 58 behaves as if it were a rigid element and subsequent variation in the volume of the chamber 76 causes passage of shock absorbing fluid from the chamber 76 to the chamber 78 via the passage 66. The resilient deformation of the membrane 38 allows expansion of the chamber 78 during passage of the fluid to the inside of this chamber 78. An identical operating state occurs in the reverse sense, in such a way that the fluid flows alternatively between the two chambers 76, 78 through the hole 66, determining in this way a shock absorbing effect of the viscous type.

On the other hand, when oscillations of reduced amplitude occur, the variations in volume of chamber 76 are completely absorbed by the elastic deformation in the two senses of ring 58, no substantial passage of fluid between the chambers 76 and 78 occurs and consequently no shock absorbing of the viscous type is produced.

Claims (6)

1. A damping support for suspending a body on a supporting structure, the support comprising a tubular mounting body for fixing to the supporting structure; an attaching body for fixing to the body, the attaching body being coaxial with the tubular mounting body and connected thereto by means of an annular, elastomeric element the radially outer surface of which is fixed to the tubular body and the radially inner surface of which is fixed to the attaching body; wherein the attaching body is coaxial with the annular, elastomeric element one end of the attaching body extending beyond the elastomeric element, and the tubular mounting body is provided with a transverse wall formed by a resilient membrane which is located, with respect to the annular, elastomeric element at the end which is opposed to the end from which the attaching body extends, the resilient membrane defining, together with the annular elastomeric element, a chamber internally of the tubular mounting body, the chamber being filled with a shock-absorbing fluid, a transverse separator subdividing the chamber into two secondary chambers the transverse separator being made up by a rigid peripheral portion which is fixed to the internal surface of the tubular mounting body and by a deformable, elastomeric central portion provided with a central aperture which allows fluid communication between the two secondary chambers; and arresting means carried by the tubular mounting body limiting axial deformation of the central portion of the transverse separator in either axial direction with respect to a central rest position.

A support according to claim 1, wherein the transverse separator comprises a first rigid ring which is locked against axial movement in the tubular mounting member and which has suspended internally thereof and concentrically therewith a ring of elastomeric material having an axial thickness which is less than the thickness of the rigid ring; and a bush which is supported coaxially inside the ring of elastomeric material; the arresting means comprising a pair of second rigid rings which are locked against axial movement in the tubular mounting body and which are arranged coaxially on opposite sides of the first ring, the radially inner edges of the two second rigid rings being located substantially flush with the radially inner edge of the ring of elastomeric material.
3. A support according to claim 2, wherein the two second rigid rings have a plurality of axial holes which are concentric and angularly spaced and which are located close to the external edge of the ring of elastomer material.

A support according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the attaching body comprises a bush having an axial hole which is screw-threaded at its end nearest the separator, and through which absorbing fluid is introduced into the two secondary chambers of the tubular mounting body, and a removable, screw-threaded plug for insertion, in use, into the screw-threaded end of the bush.
5. A support according to claim 1, substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
6. A motor vehicle comprising a chassis and an engine, the engine being suspended on the chassis by at least one damping support constructed according to any one of the preceding claims.
