Abstract

The mechanism is a conversion of the conventional door knob or handle on household doors. When fitted, the handle would be flush fitting with the decorative plate which would be screwed into the door, as opposed to the protruding aspect of the conventional door knob or handle. A space is provided behind the handle to allow for one's hand to press down the handle and pull the door open. The latch-retraction spindle is rotated through a rack and pinion arrangement (not shown). The handle may be locked. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Door handle conversion I wish to register the following mechanism for the purpose of obtaining priority with a view to obtaining a patent within the prescribed period.
General Statement The mechanism is a conversion of the conventional door knob or handle on interior household doors.
Description
When fitted the handle would be flush fitting with the decorative plate which would be screwed onto the door as opposed to the protruding aspect of the conventional door knob or handle.
A space is provided behind the handle to allow for ones hand to press down the handle and pull the door open.
The conversion would not require any alteration to the existing locks or doors. It would simply involve the removal of the handle and insertion of the conversion.
In basic terms the action of the mechanism is a "press down and pull" action and is explained in the drawings enclosed.
There are 3 sheets containing a total of 5 drawings. The sheets are numbered one to three with corresponding numbering on the duplicates.
The 5 figures illustrating the mechanism are: Figure 1 shows the front view of the handle; Figure 2 shows the back view of handle in Fig. 1; Figure 3 shows interior handle mechanism; Figure 4 shows adjustable shaft in gear mechanism; Figure 5 shows conversion fitted on both sides of door.
In addition to the mechanism as described above and in the drawings, an attatchment would be fitted, as described below, for doors requiring to be locked e.g. bathroom doors, toilet doors.
The attachment is a spring loaded push button type shaft which when pressed in would engage below the "sliding toothed shaft", preventing the handle being pressed down.
Finally the objective of the door handle conversion is: 1 to prevent accident in the home by not having any protruding parts and 2 to produce a decorative fitting for interior doors.
CLAIMS (7 Sep 1978) 1. A flush fitting door handle conversion, the handle itself being flush fitting with the plate screwed onto the door, and the handle being operated by pressing down the handle and pulling the door open; the handle when pressed down causes the spring loaded sliding toothed shaft, meshed with the gear wheel to turn the adjustable shaft (adjustable in the sense that it could be adjusted inside the gear to accommodate the varying thickness of doors), which fits into the existing lock and also with an additional spring loaded locking device for doors requiring to be locked.
2. As claimed in claim 1, a flush fitting door handle conversion, the handle itself being flush fitting with the plate, screwed onto the door and operated by pressing down the handle and pulling the door open.
3. As claimed in claim 1, a door handle which when pressed down causes the spring loaded sliding toothed shaft meshed with the gear wheel to turn the adjustable shaft (adjustable in the sense that it could be adjusted inside the gear to accommodate the varying thickness of doors) which fits into the existing lock and thus turns the lock; the handle being returned by the action of the spring.
4. As claimed in claim 1, a device for doors requiring to be locked, the device being a spring loaded push button shaft which when pressed in would engage the sliding toothed shaft preventing the handle being pressed down.
5. A door handle conversion as hereinbefore described with reference to Fig. 1 submitted.
CLAIMS (15 Aug 1979) 1. As an alternative method to the spring loaded sliding toothed shaft meshed with the gear wheel to turn the adjustable shaft; a linkage could be attached to the handle at one end and a cam attached to the other end of the linkage, the adjustable shaft fitting into the cam and when the handle is pressed down the linkage will turn the cam. To secure a free running handle, four wheels are fitted to the handle, one at each end.
6. As claimed in Claim 1 (Additional paragraph), a linkage attached to the handle at one end and a cam attached to the other end of the linkage; the adjustable shaft fitting into the cam and when the handle is pressed down the linkage turns the cam.
