Abstract

202,602. Platen, B. C. von, Munters, C. G., and Tillquist, H. Aug. 18, 1922, [Convention date]. Refrigerating, absorption machines and processes for.-In a continuous-cycle system, movable parts such as pumps &c. are dispensed with and the cooling agent, which may be ammonia, is caused to circulate automatically and in one direction in a closed system and to evaporate and diffuse into an inert gas, such as hydrogen, enclosed in the evaporator and absorber, so that substantially the same absolute pressure is maintained throughout the circulating system. The system comprises a boiler K, a condenser coil C, a cooling water tank B, an evaporator G, and an absorber A. The evaporator and absorber are in communication with one another by means of pipes M, X, connecting the vessels at the top and bottom respectively and formed as a heat exchanger R, and are filled with an inert non-condensing gas or gas mixture. The evaporator and absorber contains a porous or fibrous material E such as metal wool or cuttings in cells F with open tops and perforated bottoms H. A liquid seal U is provided between the condenser coil C and the evaporator G. The boiler and absorber are connected by means of pipes L, P, so as to form a closed circulating system for the absorption liquid. The pipes L, P form a heat exchanger S; the pipe L ends in the absorber as a distributor O and the pipe P is formed with a coil T, through which the liquid is lifted by the development of gas to the top of the boiler. The boiler K may be heated in any suitable way or may be placed in a water bath.
