A mounting for a reversible window, for guiding the movement of the sash in the window frame, comprising guides for slide members 1 at the upper edge of the sash and guides for slide members 5 on one end of each of two support arms for the sash, the guides being formed by respective exterior and interior surfaces of one and the same rail 3, which is disposed on both sides of the window frame. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Mountings for reversible windows The present invention pertains to mountings for reversible windows, for guiding the movement of the sash in the window frame, comprising guides for slide members provided at the upper edge of the sash and guides for slide members provided at one end of each of two support arms for the sash. Reversible windows in which the sash can be pivoted 180 such that both of the windowpane surfaces can be cleaned from the inside are previously known. Originally, such windows were made with a horizontal axis of pivot approximately through the center of gravity for the casement, but such windows had the substantial disadvantage that when the window was in the airing position or when it was being reversed, about half of the sash would project inwards into the room and create problems for the curtain hanging arrangements.
For this reason, a number of window hinges were developed which permitted the same movement without necessitating that one-half of the sash had to project inwards of the associated frame. Examples of these can be found in Norwegian Patents 11 8,509 and 122,614.
This desired movement of the sash, however, requires that the upper edge of the sash and one end of an arm in the hinge be able to move vertically in the frame, and this is obtained by providing guides for the movable parts with slide members in the window frame. In previously known embodiments, such guides are formed by grooves cut into the wood, optionally reinforced by rails set into the grooves as shown in Norwegian Patent 137,868. The grooving and the mounting of two single rails, or optionally, of one rail with two grooves, is time-consuming and expensive, and because the two movable parts on each side of the sash each must have a respective guide to enable them to pass one another during a portion of the sash move ment, the consumption of material also enters into the picture owing to economic considerations. The guides are often rails of stainless steel or some other expensive weather-resistant material.
The purpose of the present invention is to arrive at a means for guiding the movement of the sash which does not have the above mentioned disadvantages, and this is achieved by forming the rail such that two slide mem bers can move respectively on the outside and the inside of the same rail, and still pass by one another.
The invention is characterized by the features recited in the appurtenant patent claims, and will be described in greater detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings, where Figure 1 shows a window of the type on which the present invention will be used, Figure 2 shows a section of one embodiment of a rail, and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the sash and window frame and the rail and slide members at the moment the slide members pass one another when the window is being reversed.
As seen on Fig. 1, a slide member 1 which is mounted on a suitable fitting 2 is adapted to slide along a rail 3. The fitting 2 with the slide member 1 is attached to the upper edge of a sash 4. Another slide member 5 is attached to one end of a support arm 6, but is also guided by the rail 3, and the opposite end of the arm 6 is fastened to the sash 4 to support it. The rail 3 is fastened to a window frame 7. In accordance with the invention, the rail 3 is made such that it constitutes a guide for both slide members, the slide member 1 sliding along the outside of the rail and the slide member 5 sliding inside the rail. This is possible because the rail is made as a hollow profile, open on one side. Fig. 2 shows a section of such a rail, which in this example is a formed plate of stainless steel. The rail plate is bent back on itself to form a flange 8 with a fastener hole 9 provided therein. A side wall 10 of the U-shaped profile extends out perpendicularly from the flange, with a top wall 11 at right angles thereto, and a side wall 1 2 extending downwardly from the top wall 11, the side wall 1 2 being shorter than the side wall 10, such that a longitudinal slot 1 3 is formed. As shown on Fig. 3, the slot permits the slide member 5 to be guided internally in the rail, which in this case is generally designated by reference numeral 3.The slide member 5 is L-shaped and passes into the hollow rail through the slot 1 3. The slide member 1 fits outside the rail 3 and, as can be seen on the drawing, the configuration of the slide member 5 is such that it and the slide member 1 can pass by one another. In Fig. 3, the two slide members are shown at the moment of passing.
As is apparent from the above description and drawings, the rail is simple to mount in the window frame and provides good guidance of the two slide members, including the movement of the two slide members in relation to one another, because they are guided on and by the same rail. In previous embodi ments, one often experienced problems in aligning two rails so as to be parallel, and this disadvantage is avoided in the present invention.
The example illustrated herein serves only to illustrate the invention and should not be construed as limiting the scope of protection provided by this patent, as other embodi ments of the rail shown in Fig. 2 can easily be envisioned. For example, the rail could be extruded of aluminum, and the fastening flange 8 could also be formed in some other manner, and the rail would still remain within the scope of the invention, as long as the two slide members are guided by the exterior and interior surfaces, respectively, of the rail.

Claims (5)

1. A mounting for a reversible window, for guiding the movement of the sash in the window frame, comprising guides for slide members at the upper or lower edge of the sash and guides for slide members on one end of each of two support arms for the sash, characterized in that the guides are formed by the respective exterior and interior surfaces of one and the same rail, which is disposed on both sides of the window frame.
2. A window mounting according to claim 1, characterized in that the rail is a hollow profile which is provided with a longitudinai slot.
3. A window mounting according to claims 1 and 2 characterized in that the slide member for the arm is adapted to fit inside the internally-open cross-sectional configuration of the hollow profile, and that the slide member at the upper edge of the sash has an approximately U-shaped configuration which is adapted to fit three outside surfaces of the rail, said slide members being formed such that neither of them has parts which obstruct the path of movement for the other, whereby they are able to pass by one another, moving in the direction of the height of the window, when the sash is reversed.
4. A window mounting according to claims 1-3, characterized in that the rail has a flange for fastening the rail to the window frame, with one side wall of the hollow profile projecting outwardly from said flange, a top wall formed at a right angle thereto, and an opposing side wall parallel to but shorter than said first side wall, such that said longitudinal slot is formed.
5. A mounting, for a reversible window, substantially as he hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
