Abstract

A process for polymerising ethylene or a mixture of ethylene with up to 40% by weight of other 1-olefins or diene monomer comprises contacting the monomer under particle form polymerisation conditions at a temperature not above 112 DEG C with (A) a heat activated supported chromium oxide catalyst and (B) a catalyst modifier comprising a magnesium compound having the general formula MgR<1>Y wherein R<1> is a hydrocarbon group and wherein Y is a hydrocarbon group, hydrogen, halogen, -SiR3, -NR2, -PR2, -OCR3, -OSiR3, -OR or -SR wherein the R groups are hydrogen or hydrocarbon groups. The fluid medium in which the particle form polymerisation is carried out is preferably a liquid, for example a liquid hydrocarbon.
