Abstract

A fluid pumping device for use with reverse osmosis apparatus comprises: a first fluid pump comprising a first piston face (15) movable back and forth in a first chamber (21); a second fluid pump comprising a second piston face (16) movable back and forth in a second chamber (26); drive means (14, 17, 18) to move said piston faces (15, 16) back and forth in opposite phase to one another within the respective chambers; and valve means (23, 24, 27) for controlling admission and discharge of fluid to and from said chambers (21, 26), such that in operation of the pumping device the first piston face (15) acts to draw fluid into the first chamber (21) and to pump that fluid under pressure to the inlet means of the reverse osmosis apparatus and that pressurised reject fluid is admitted to the second chamber (26) during pumping strokes of the first piston face (15) so as to act on the second piston face (16) thereby to assist the pumping action and is exhausted from the second chamber (26) during return strokes of the first piston face (15). The two piston faces may form part of the same piston or diaphragm. <IMAGE>
