Abstract

An acceleration sensor (10) has a float structure (36) immersed in liquid in a casing (14) and mounted for pivotal movement about a shaft (30) when the sensor is subjected to acceleration in a predetermined plane. The float structure has a pair of spaced floats (44) having centres of bouyancy above an axis of rotation. Openings are provided in the float structure at different angular positions about the axis of rotation. Detectors (86,88) e.g. photo emitters (86) and photo-sensors (88), are located in the casing for responding when an opening moves between the components thereof so that an electronic circuit (100) will indicate differing degrees of acceleration in dependence on the positions of the openings. The circuit counts and displays the number of times that particular acceleration levels are sensed, and may also actuate a warning. Two sensors (10, 12) at right angles to one another can indicate acceleration in two directions. <IMAGE>
