Abstract

A process for separating a gas mixture utilising pressure swing adsorption techniques. Two beds 1, 2 of adsorbent material are provided. The gas mixture is fed to a first bed 1 at high pressure and the unadsorbed component(s) withdrawn through a line 13. At the same time adsorbent material is continuously being withdrawn from bed 1 and passed, e.g. by pneumatic conveyor 6, to bed 2 which is maintained under subatmospheric pressure by a vacuum pump 10, so as to desorb the gas and pass it out through a line 11. Adsorbent regenerated in bed 2 is continuously withdrawn at substantially the same rate and returned to bed 1. The adsorbent in each bed may be fluidised. The adsorber may be mounted above the regenerator. Adsorbent is fed from an upper bed to a lower bed whilst maintaining the pressure difference therebetween by means of a rotary valve 14 or a transfer chamber having gated inlet and outlet ports. <IMAGE>
