Abstract

A phosphor, co-activated with Nd<3+> and Yb<3+>, which is excited by infrared rays and has an emission spectrum in the infrared wavelength region, has the formula: Lnl-x-yNdxYbyA5(MO4)4, Lnl-x-yNdxYbyD3(BO3)4, Lnl-x-yNdxYbyP5O14, Lnl-x-yNdxYbyA3(PO4)2, Lnl-x-yNdxYbyNa2Mg2(VO4)3 or Lnl-x-yNdxYbyA'(MO4)2 wherein Ln is one or more of Bi, Ce, Ga, Gd, In, La, Lu, Sb, Sc and Y, A is K and/or Na, M is W and/or Mo, D is Al and/or Cr and A' is Li, Na and/or K; 0.01</=x</=0.99 0.01</=y</=0.99 and x+y</=1. This phosphor is useful for an optical card reader. Many examples are given together with methods of preparation.
