Abstract

An expanding mat is used for fixing a fuel cell to a support element. Preferably, the fuel cell is a tubular fuel cell 10, particularly a high-temperature fuel cell such as a solid oxide fuel cell, comprising a tube 11, 12, 13, on whose surface a first electrode and a second electrode is deposited. A foot section 11 of the tube may be fixed by the expanding mat 30 in order to effect a mechanically stable and gas-tight connection of the fuel cell 10 to the support element 20. The foot section 11 may include a pair of ridges 11a, 11b, between which the expanding mat 30 is located. The support element 20 may comprise a pair of plates 21, 22, with corresponding openings 21b, 22b in which the fuel cell 10 is fixed. The plates 21, 22 may be tapered at their edges 21a, 22a adjacent the openings.
