Abstract

A magnetic lifting device includes spaced permanent magnets 6, 8 having inner like poles and fixed pole pieces 2, 4 for coupling to a load 14. A further pole piece 12 is movable within the space between the magnets 6, 8 to vary the lifting field. A substantially non- magnetic seal 18 prevents detritus entering the device. Detritus which attaches itself to the seal 18 is removed by passing a current ramp through a coil 22 around the movable magnet 12. <IMAGE>
