Abstract

The separator is a composite inorganic/organic material which comprises a matrix of a styrene- butadiene copolymer or an olefin- acrylic acid copolymer, the matrix having dispersed therein inorganic particles of particle size not more than one micron. The inorganic particles constitute 30 to 80% of the total weight of the matrix and inorganic particles. In a preferred embodiment, two kinds of inorganic particles are employed, one being leachable by an alkaline electrolyte (e.g. silica) and the other being non-leachable (e.g. titanium dioxide).
