Abstract
Improving the resistance to oxidation of an electroconductive body, including a carbon base (1) e.g. of graphite defining a surface having pores and carrying an adherent discontinuous surface coating (3) of a refractory oxide e.g. of alumina, chromic oxide or silica, by: immersing the body at least partially into a refractory metal salt melt, e.g. of cryolite or alkaline earth metal and aluminium chloride, having a boiling point in excess of 400 DEG C; electrodepositing said melt onto said body thereby closing practically all of those pores and discontinuities (2a- 2c,4a-4d, 5a, 5b) submerged in said melt; and removing said body from said melt before said refractory oxide has completely disintegrated or dissolved; to give a final oxidation agent- resistant coating which is keyed onto the surface of the carbon base. <IMAGE>
