Abstract

A gas fire has an exhaust outlet 18 into a chimney 19. Such an arrangement can be dangerous if the chimney lining crumbles and rubble builds up to a level to block the outlet. A safety device comprises a pan 21 carried in the chimney on the end of a pivoted lever 22. As rubble falls in the chimney part of it lands in the pan and moves it downwards against the resistance of a spring 24. Lever 22 operates a microswitch 23 when a predetermined weight of rubble is in the pan. A flame failure valve 25 carries an extra connection to the microswitch so that when the microswitch is operated the valve closes. Alternative arrangements include a mechanical lock operated by the lever which prevents turning on of a gas tap. <IMAGE>
